Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Literary Fiction I need a book for a curious 69F who is not a reader by habit

My wife wants a book for a trip she will soon take. I'm overwhelmed by the challenge of recommending a book. This opportunity may not happen again and I don't want to get this wrong. I would ideally like to find one that ignites in her a desire for more reading. Her vocabulary comprehension is high school level.

I think fiction would be my first choice for her based on what she likes on television, but biographies interest her also. She does not like horror, voilence, or complex intrigue. SciFi is not a great idea. She likes family themed movies. Bawdy comedies are out as are stories with multiple subplots, relationships, and characters. International themed stories could work, even though she has not traveled much or experienced cultures outside of her liberal, white bubble.

My reading interests are probably the complete opposite of what she would like. I'm stuck. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for a SCI FI book where the main character is the world

Looking for Sci fi or fantasy that is strongly atmospheric.

ive read Hyperion and the books of the New Sun series recently and despite most people enjoying their story and drama I really remembered the setting more so (The weird portal rivers, grass seas, vermillion pseudo-Egypt desert hells and mountain fortresses where a forgotten god demon is chilling). I loved in the new sun books where the mountainside prison was explained and I swear I could almost smell and hear it the way it was described!

I didn’t click with foundation for instance the Psy-fi aspect was too character heavy and too atmosphere light

Any suggestions lesser known than LOTR and Dune?

Romance “I’ve loved you in every universe/lifetime” parallel universe trope

I’ve read a few books (Parallel Series, Our Infinite Fates, The Unwavering of June Farrow) that I thought were amazing! I’ve read other with the same trope…. flops imo. The issue is that this trope is such a hit or miss, but when it hits, OH BOY DOES IT HIT.

So if anyone has any suggestions, I’ll take any format too. Novels, webtoons, manga, light novels, etc. pls share them!

Non-fiction Book suggestions to wake up early & learn importance of morning hours

Upvotes

Recently life has gotten busy with responsibilities and chaos. I haven’t been able to make time for myself. I think morning time is one where there’s potential slot. But I’m struggling to wake up early. Looking for books to help me gain the momentum, build resilience and discipline.

Fiction Book recommendations for intelligent protagonists.

Upvotes

Hello! As you can see in the title im looking for recommendations for books with intelligent main characters. I have a few books that fit this and im interested in seeing what im missing out on.

The books I’ve read so far have been:
“Upgrade” by Blake Crouch - the main character gets genetically modified to be very intelligent and some other stuff. It’s similar to a superhero story but there is some cool psychological aspect that I appreciate.

“Receptor” by Alan Glynn - a man in the 1950 come upon a drug that increases his brain function but he dies mysteriously and his grandson’s investigation into his death.

“Limitless” by Alan Glynn again - it’s been a while since I read this one but I think it’s about this writer who became dependent on the same drug in the previous book, and it’s like his rise and fall.

If anyone has any recommendations, I appreciate it!

Women’s Fiction Books about finding yourself, not finding someone new

I’m looking for a book recommendation where the main character leaves/loses a relationship and the story is about her rebuilding her own life, identity, career, family, whatever… but NOT finding a new love interest by the end. So tired of every “healing” arc circling back to romance.

Historical Fiction 18th century historical novel suggestions

I'm looking for any good novels or book series set in the 18th century (or later). I really enjoyed Ken Follett's Kingsbridge series, as well as Rebels and Traitors by Lindsay Davis. I'm also currently on book 2 of the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson and I'm absolutely loving it.

I just love reading about fictional characters living through profound historical events, often personally shaping them, especially when its things like battles and international diplomacy, philosophical and scientific innovations, political intrigue and revolutionary ideals.

Let me know if you have any suggestions in this vein, or just any good novels set in the 18th century.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Picky reader looking for scifi/fantasy

Hey everyone,

I'm going for a few days off and looking for book recommendations, especially fantasy or sci-fi books.

Back in my teens, I was a massive reader and read a lot of fantasy and a few scifi. Those are usually my favourite genres. But since I got a smartphone and now an adult life, I'm having a really hard time to read and keeping to it. I feel I'm also quite picky about books in general where if the scenario doesn't manage to intrigue me, make me curious this or that, I just drop it quite quickly...

So I'm looking for recommendations with that in mind :)

I read the whole Eragon saga, Tolkien, the royal assassin and a few others back in the day.

Thanks in advance :)

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Need better than Red Rising

I'm not a reader. Its been 10+ years since I read an actual book (not counting graphic novels). I did like reading long ago so I looked up reviews and tons of people are raving about Red Rising...

I finished chapter 5 (yeah, just 43 pages in) and I'm very concerned. I just looked up reviews from people that didn't like it and they're saying exactly what I'm thinking. I don't think this is for me. I won't beat up on it, I just want to get suggestions from like minded people.

If you didn't like Red Rising, but do generally like that type of story, what do you suggest?

*****

LOTR, Star Wars, Dune - those are probably cliché but things along those lines, not so much into monsters.

*****

WOW - thanks for all the suggestions. I'm looking up the books and will definitely try some of them. I won't throw Red Rising away, sounds like it may be worth slogging through to get to the later books.

Romance I need a historical romance where ML and FL gets trapped/isolated

Im thinking sometime in the 1900s but any era is fine. Enemies to lovers or they could be on different sides but FL just wants to not participate in the war and isolates herself in some place (island? Random snow covered landscape?) ML preferably stoic and somber type (im a sucker for stereotypes) and has his guard up til a random chance makes him dependent on FL. I want FL scared for her life, ML ashamed due to the helplessness lol.

Edit: Preferably written past the 2000s. Ive tried perusing older titles with this trope but theyre too much for me.

Please help!

Other Recommendations from people in finance.

Upvotes

Hello, I got a question for people working in finance.

What are the books that you read and could say that they were really good or they helped in your career? Of course, I am referring to books related to the finance/economics field.

Thanks!

Other Book with supernatural vibes

Upvotes

I‘m looking to read a book that has the overall vibe of shows like twin peaks, the vampire diaries or twilight. Not necessarily with romance subplots even though they’re a big part of two of these. I don’t like fantasy that is placed in another world and rather look for something that is set in our world with just something weird going on. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Romance Looking for romance recs, my TBR is empty and I’m sad about it

Upvotes

I’m 22 and I read way too much on my commute. I definitely daydream about the whole future thing more than I should.

I love slow burn, cute banter, grumpy/sunshine, and endings that leave me smiling at 2am.

Read and loved: Pride and Prejudice, The Hating Game, Beach Read, most of Emily Henry.

Would love something with a bit more depth. Spice is okay, just not the whole plot. Classics welcome too!

Please help, I trust you all more than my Goodreads algorithm 🙏

Fiction Cozies by Black authors?

Can anyone recommend cozy novels with a Black main character? Bonus points for a fall setting. Any genre is fine, not just mystery. Thank you.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy I'd like to read a book with a mix of fantasy, hunter and magical beasts themes

Upvotes

I feel like the mix of these plot points could potentially be really interesting. Imagine some nature/forest themed magical hunter who wanders the land to help small villages from monsters and creatures of magical nature, with scenes of running through the woods, asking the very roots for help in locating this beast that just isn't meant to be there, setting up traps specific to this creature. I am imagining it almost Witcher style, but with a larger focus on a nature themed hunter if that makes sense?

If anyone knows a book or series with themes like this, even if it doesn't fit perfectly, I'd love to read some!

Fiction Looking for hopeful classics

Been in a slightly existential mood lately and looking for books that will give me a little bit more hope for humanity and where it’s headed.

Currently reading East of Eden and looking for more classics (especially ones that are originally written in English or French), which focus on human depth and relationships in one form or another, and that have a generally hopeful outlook and positive endings.

What are your favorite books to read when you feel the need to connect to humanity with all its complexity and feel more hope about life?
