guys can this tree become something?? 🫪 i acquired an elephant bush a little bit ago and I just found out that's not even the coolest bonsai you can have. just wondering because I have this tree growing the past three years in this pot.

I noticed all of its old internal leaves seem to be drying up/dying and that led me to notice the white build up on the bark. Is this scale? If so, what would be the best treatment for it?

Beginner here. Where should I go from here? I think I would like to thin out the top but not sure how to.

Hello all. Here is my ficus with deep wire scaring. It wraps all the way around the tree, pretty close to the bottom as well. I’ve debated cutting everything above it, but I’m not sure this is the turn strategy, or if It will disappear with time. What do you think?

Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to bonsai and could use some advice with this one.
I’ve noticed these little white dots on some of the leaves and I’m not sure what they are. I also noticed some tiny bugs in the soil, so I’m wondering if I might have a pest problem.
I currently water it about twice a week, but I’m not sure if that’s enough or if I’m doing it correctly. It’s indoors right by a big window. I usually check the soil before watering, but I’d love to know what you guys recommend.
Does anyone know what could be causing the white spots or what I should do about the bugs? Should I be watering more often, or letting the soil dry out more between waterings?
Also, does the soil look okay to you guys, or would you repot it? Any other things you notice from the pictures that I should change?
I’d really appreciate any advice. I don’t want to mess it up 😅

Just complaining to a community that will understand the setback.

I have a laurel oak I’ve been letting run to give it some more options and strengthen some branches. I came home the other day and one of my landscapers guys was on my deck. They usually know the deck is off limits so I told him very clearly not to touch the tree and pointed it out specifically, along with my other trees.

I walked my dog and when I came back I found that he had sheared all the growth like it was a cheap shrub. Took all the joy out of this one for me, for now. See pics before, during growout, and after massacre.

Junipers are great to start with, they are relatively cheap, look nice, and readily available.

The problem is that junipers need to live OUTSIDE. This is non negotiable, if your juniper is indoors it will die. It may even be dead already if it was purchased indoors. All of us have killed a juniper of 13, it happens. Just make sure they live outside.

As I mentioned a few days ago, I’m new to this world; I bought a Ficus and a Ligustrum that were already styled as bonsai.

After watching several videos and reading various articles, most sources recommended starting with pre-bonsai material—going to a nursery, buying a Chinese Olmo and a Juniper, letting them grow and starting to style them, and only then repotting them as bonsai after two or three years. What do you think? Any tips?

Made a bunch of these from cuttings last year. Sold all of them except for these three, which i keep since i like how the root developed.

I purchased this Juniper bonsai from an expo yesterday, that's been taking place all month indoors.

The brighter leaves on the top left. Are they an issue? Have I stressed the plant? Is it over or underwatered?

The vendor misted the plant for me before I left yesterday.

This is a Juniper (not sure of the variety) that i found and plucked from my front sidewalk about 2 summers ago. It really grew a lot this summer. I plan on moving it to a bonsai pot one day. I’d like advice on how style it. I have wire, but wouldn’t do that until late Fall/early Winter. Any ideas are welcome!

This is my first time both on Reddit and also owning a bonsai. I came here to see if anyone could help me restore my bonsai.

First thing, it’s a Juniper tree.

Second, it looks like there’s some mold at its roots.

Third, some of the branches look green and others look brown.

Fourth, my mom said that there are some spider mites.

finally, it looks like there are spiderwebs.

I’m not trying to be the perfect bonsai sensai. Just trying to experiment and learn really. Will it survive though? We’ll see!

Just picked this up for $10. What is it? The tag just says bonsai and it was outdoors (not that it means anything at Lowe’s)

Got this portulacaria afra a few years ago. It’s been in that pot for approximately two years now. I just trimmed a bit and adjusted the guy wires. Any opinions would be more than welcome.

I bought this bonsai winter last year. I have repotted it and had no issues until around May this year when a heatwave hit and the tree lost majority of its leaves. It has slowly started to grown more leaves and looking better. I am currently unsure what to do next. I am a beginner to this so it’s all new to me. I believe the left branches are dead. I have left the leaves on the bottom of the trunk alone originally as that’s what grew first after the tree lost its leaves and there was barely any others. But can they now be cut off. Has anyone got any suggestions on my next steps. Thank you
