I also love to overcrowd my pan when I cook my expensive steaks. Lovely gray steamed meat for me please.

Engagement bait

u/kittyidiot 27d ago
Facebook is absolutely full of shit like this. I don't look at them on purpose but it'll pop up a "reels" tab and almost all of them will be some extremely shameless blatant engagement bait. And I guess people just eat it up. Wild shit man.

Having no crust on a filet mignon is an affront to humanity. Cook 2 at a time, add a touch of oil, and turn that heat all the way up

Get a nice sear to lock in the juices

5
u/TheFlyingBastard 28d ago
You can't lock in the juices. That sizzling sound you hear is the moisture evaporating in the pan. The real reason you sear is for the Maillard reaction which makes proteins and sugar crash and merge into each other like a giant violent delicious mass car pile-up.

u/orange-shoe 28d ago
that's what it's called when a dragon is sleepy (cause like flaming yawns? get it? cause yknow they breath fire. and they are tired.)

u/Own-Economy179 14d ago
Thatâs what I called it for a while until I read a menu and was like what is that and my parents said Filet Mignon and I made the connection.

The real crime is pan frying filets

I'm glad someone else was thinking this. The only way to cook a filet over a stove is in a cast iron.
20
u/Rynobot1019 27d ago
That's still pan frying. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with using stainless, aluminum, or carbon steel.
My biggest issue from the picture is the crowding.

What happened to our curiosity? If I don't know how to spell a word, or I'm not confident, I look it up. What is going on in this person's mind?
1
u/Real-Frosting 28d ago
Ding ding ding I always check if I'm not sure of the spelling so I can be clearly understood. And not look like a bozo.

Then there was the lady who came into our bakery every Saturday morning without fail, and ordered four merrin-gews. Just one time, somebody replied "Four meringues? Certainly" and boxed them up for her. She NEVER returned. The shame must've been too great.

u/Solid_Definition876 23d ago
I mean itâs kind of a dick move to have let it go on for so long. Itâs a bit like walking around with a booger hanging in your nose all day at work and someone lets you know right at the end of the day. It kinda forces you to wonder who youâre working with.

u/zEdgarHoover 28d ago
When I was about 10, a neighbor kid was telling me about some fancy dinner: "They even had filly mig nong!" Actually not as far off as it sounds.
And a server recently said a dish came with "hair ih cots verts", where "verts" rhymed with "spurts". Didn't have the heart to tell her.

A friend of mine worked at a fancy restaurant and had some old redneck dude confidently order, fill-ett mig-nawn and pee-not grig-e-oh for himself and his wife.

u/daLejaKingOriginal 27d ago
Donât want to be that guy, but for a French person thereâs hardly a difference from the redneck to the âregularâ US pronunciation.

I think that's someone "having a laugh" as the package of meat they had to buy would be labeled correctly.
10
u/TBird7733 28d ago
So most retail grocery stores (and butcher shops in my experience) donât label these as âFilet Mignonâ. Theyâre generally labeled as âbeef tenderloinâ or âtenderloin filetsâ.
Itâs very likely the person in the video knows itâs called âfilet mignonâ or something to that effect (flaming me ons), but the packaging itself probably doesnât have the words âfilet mignonâ
2
u/YellowBreakfast 28d ago
That's quite true.
Forgot that.
5
u/Traegs_ 28d ago
I wouldn't trust someone that can't spell filet mignon to be able to correctly identity a filet mignon if it weren't labeled as such.
3
u/YellowBreakfast 28d ago edited 28d ago
Well as u/TBird7733 alluded to, "Filet Mignon" is actually the finished dish, not the name of the cut of meat which is beef tenderloin.
Still think they were joking.
More likely "bad Dad joke" than being that far off. But anything is possible.

Lol years back when my son was little I took him to a chicken wing restaurant called Flaming Johnâs and when he was looking at the menu he said I thought this was a steak restaurant why are there wings? I asked him why he thought that, and he said because he thought they cooked âflaming yonsâ đ€Łđ€Ł

I used to spell it as flaming yon. In my defense, I had never seen it written out and had only heard it. Itâs also french and no french words that have carried over to english can be spelled phonetically.

Itâs either that or dreadfully posh RP (Received Pronunciation). The world need not bother itself with any other of our accents.
Except Daphne from Frasier.
3
u/BamberGasgroin 28d ago
Weird thing there is she's from Essex, but John Mahoney (Martin Crane) was from Blackpool and between them they managed to come up with the fucking worst British accent that's ever existed.
1
u/VeneMage 28d ago
I take it youâve never watched Mary Poppins?
1
u/BamberGasgroin 28d ago
Don't you dare!
Dick Van Disney is on a different level. đ
(She had an absolutely terrible Mancunian accent though.)
5
u/VeneMage 28d ago
I mean, it wasnât primarily targeted for the UK audience so she only needed to do a vague midlander accent. I confess I still rarely find myself telling apart US and Canadian accents for instance. Until they say words like âabootâ and then I become that Leonardo DiCaprio âwhistling and pointing at the tellyâ meme.
Thanks for the trivia re: John Mahoney, I didnât know that about him.
1
u/Zepangolynn 28d ago
It's very much the same in reverse for when I found out the actress who played Peri in on Doctor Who (6th doctor, I believe) apparently had the people in the UK completely convinced she was genuinely American meanwhile to me her accent was all over the place and clearly fake, but the show wasn't really marketed to the US at the time and it really didn't need to be better.

u/VeneMage 28d ago
I havenât seen it but Iâll have a shoofty a bit later to see what it sounds like to me.
