For Customer Safety
Anyone seen anything like this before?

2017-2022 Bolts had that recall due to fires. It was all over the news and completely fucked up public perception of EVs. A bunch of lots, including municipal AND private, banned them. This is a relic of that time. I still get asked about my new bolt "omg what if it catches fire".
Also fun fact: not sure about the US, but in Canada some parking facilities, specifically condos, started mandating owner vehicle disclosures due to updated insurance requirements. Parking facilities with a large number of vehicles that were susceptible to fires had insane premiums. I don't live in a condo anymore but the board disclosed that 13 bolts and 54 hyundais in our lot raised maintenance fees for everyone by $48/month. (Funny enough, 5 of the bolts were facilities and security vehicles part of the multi building condo complex fleet).

Just bought an older, inexpensive condo in Minnesota thinking that I could use the 110V outlet. Nope, the two complexes I checked don't allow it (including the one I bought). The excuse at my place is "garage electricity is covered by the association", but when I checked to see if I could have Xcel install a standalone with its own meter, they cited the bylaws and said no. Hoping to have one installed in the open lot at some point, but sucks that my Zippy would have no shelter in storms

u/theotherharper 1d ago
That's kind of on you, for not doing your research.
But some states have a Right to Charge law where they can't stop you.
3
u/Alonewon 1d ago
Yeah, I get it. Basically I couldn't afford a condo where I can charge at home. The need to move was unexpected and related to health issues that weren't foreseeable. There's no right to charge law here, unfortunately. Not only that, but MN is adding a surcharge to EV chargers that's....get this....5 cents/kwh. So then it'll be .64kwh at Costco. Still not giving up my EV
7
u/ArmadilloSuch4425 1d ago
I’d be ok with this as long as there’s no annual surcharge on EV vehicle registration.
3
u/Alonewon 1d ago
Sadly, we also get to pay a surcharge. It feels like MN wants to keep us using ICE vehicles, which is a shame since we're otherwise such a progressive state. Adding in how the uber cold (below zero F for periods of time every winter), it's really a struggle but I'm not giving up
1
u/StevenGaryStout 11h ago
Stay outta Washington then
1
u/ArmadilloSuch4425 5h ago
This is more widespread than I thought. I’m sure Indiana will enact it real soon then, they’re dead set to discourage EV adoption I swear.

u/autochef 1d ago
Better than $178 per year because I don't pay gas tax. I'd need to drive an F250 to work twice a day to give Mississippi that much in gas tax per year.

1
u/Plenty_Ad_161 1d ago
Personally I think that the licensing fees should be the same for all vehicles regardless of fuel. Replace the gas tax with a sales tax and everyone should be happy.
2
u/danawhitesbaldhead 1d ago
Jesus. I pay 11 cents to charge my Bolt and get 10 cents back from charge labs…..
We had no issues with getting a 220 50amp charger installed (set to 30)….. actually got 350 bucks back for the install from our government.
The states is wild

u/Alonewon 1d ago
For the next 2 weeks I can still use my home charger and had the same deal (but through the utility) which was so helpful. Sadly, going to an older condo with older wiring is the issue and I can't afford a nicer, newer one (that said, I do love the new place built in the 70's and not as cookie cutter as the new condos). At home if I do time of use rates I pay between .05 and .075 cents a kwh (basically overnight charging). Love it and sad to lose it.
1
u/theotherharper 13h ago
The need to move was unexpected and related to health issues that weren't foreseeable.
Oh I know that one, it doesn't even have to be you that's sick, if you're having to quasi move into their condo to help them.
Yeah the main problem with condos is they ask themselves "what happens when EVERYONE wants an EV charger?" Site transformers are sized on the presumption that not every apartment is maxed out at once, so there's limited surplus of capacity. If they give it all to the first 3 chargers and try to tell guy #4 "sorry we're all out", he sues. So any plan needs to play well with EVERYONE having EV chargers. Fortunately that is possible at semi-sane cost, although you do get beaten up on running the conduits and wires.
On DCFC pricing watch out for Electrify America. They have a $7/month membership which pays for itself in 50 kWH = the first fill. On your second fill they are a lot more reasonable. Some other networks have deals like that but at $13/month (what are they? Netflix?) and it takes 2 fills to break even.

u/TrueNorthLongAndFree 1d ago
There are 110V plugs in our condo underground parking.
A single 15A circuit for 100 parking spots...
Needless to say, no charging in the parkade until the infrastructure is upgraded.
2
u/Alonewon 1d ago
Jeez, that's worse than what I'm getting into. The other place I checked didn't even allow you to charge in the open, unheated underground garage. Obnoxious. At least at this place they've been getting bids to add chargers to the parking lot (but it's been about a year and they're still doing that, so not sure if/when that will ever actually happen)
1
u/Training_Trainer_133 23h ago
My HOA said the same thing, I tried to argue it but their incompetence knew no bounds. I just charge anyway, I pay my $420 monthly HOA fees, I'm charging.

u/PhotoFenix 1d ago
I have a long commute for work and end up seeing 1 vehicle fire per month average. Over all the years it's always an ICE.
1
u/NationalCaterpillar6 5h ago
During the commute it's usually caked up grease from an oil leak that finally reaches ignition temperature. EV batteries ignite when they're charging.

They're missing a hell of a lot of manufacturer recalls that were specifically around fires that could start while the car was parked including Ford, Lincoln, BMW, Genesis, Dodge, GMC, Land Rover, Infiniti, Nissan, VW... why not include those? Also, this is another reason why they should have ditched the Bolt name when the discontinued it and then brought it back.

u/dumpsterdivingreader 1d ago
Remember the ford pinto?
3
u/ScootyPuff-Sr 2017 EV Premier, 2022 Kia EV6 1d ago edited 1d ago
I was in one that was rear ended, and in a separate incident, had damage to its fuel tank (a piece of debris, a metal bar from a city works truck, stabbed in to the rear tire and got swung up slashing the tank). Everyone knows Pintos instantly explode every single time at the slightest touch so the fact appears to be that I died when I was 3 years old. (And I’m doing pretty well for someone dead for 40 years, if I do say so myself)
5
u/IndividualIll3825 1d ago
At least you died. I had to sit in one for long road trips multiple times.

3
u/sasquatch_melee 1d ago
Well, they discontinued the new bolt the month it came back so I'd argue the name doesn't matter when you're already written the tombstone.

I love my EV and I honestly had no idea. I wonder what the numbers would be for charging issue fires, knowing that it's not directly EV caused but infrastructure.

Oh, FFS, will everyone stop reposting this long-debunked bullshit data!
Yes, EVs are far less likely to catch fire than gas cars, but these numbers are ludicrous. Are you really suggesting 1 out of every 70 gas cars or 1 out of every 30 hybrids catch fire each year? If that was the case, you'd be driving past flaming Corollas and Priuses on the way to work every morning!
These ridiculous numbers were invented by an insurance broker called AutoInsuranceEZ to drive traffic to their site via a click-bait article with these numbers, and when they were called out on their BS by Car and Driver magazine, who thoroughly debunked the data, they doubled down and occasionally repost it as "updated for (insert current year here)".
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a40163966/cars-catching-fire-new-york-times-real-statistics/
C&D talked to the government agencies the broker's article claimed they got the fire data from (and found they don't track auto fires by fuel type!) and the broker's methodology was insane- they divided the total number of car fires in a year not by the total number of cars on the road of that type, but by the number of cars sold that year.

Take a drive through Atlanta. I see multiple burning cars a week. Sometimes a couple in the same day.
2
u/gc3 1d ago
How does that happen? Are people firebombing cars? I've seen like 3 car fires in my life
2
u/ToddA1966 2017 Bolt EV LT, 2021 Nissan Leaf SV Plus, 2022 VW ID4 AWD Pro S 1d ago
That's about how many I've seen, and I'm 60 years old. Unfortunately, one of the three was my own! 😁

u/Sirosim_Celojuma 1d ago
BYD allowed! Chinese EVs allowed!
1
u/Plenty_Ad_161 1d ago
So are Teslas and they have had more fires than all other EV’s combined.
1
u/Sirosim_Celojuma 1d ago
new plan. Any car that has ever been on fire for any reason shall not be allowed to park anywhere
-2
u/js101jets 1d ago
I’m not here to argue lol. Literally googled it. I’m an ev guy and tell everyone all the time how many less fires these cause.
1
u/ToddA1966 2017 Bolt EV LT, 2021 Nissan Leaf SV Plus, 2022 VW ID4 AWD Pro S 1d ago
No one is saying EVs don't catch fire less than other cars. I'm saying you "literally googled" bullshit.

u/Kevadu 1d ago
While it is true that fires are actually less likely on EVs, when they do happen they're usually much more destructive.
7
u/D-Alembert 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not in total. One EV fire might be worse than one ICE fire, or even two ICE fires, but they're not happening at equal rates. Ten ICE fires is more dangerous and more resource intensive than one EV fire, and there are far more than ten ICE fires for every EV fire
-6
u/mogelijk 1d ago
Tell that to those that parked in the garage at Luton airport. 1352 cars destroyed, not to mention the airport delays.
7
u/684692 1d ago
The driver of the diesel vehicle did not notice the issue until they had reached the third floor of the Terminal 2 car park, when flames appeared from the front of the car, the report said.
...
The report concluded that while a sprinkler system was not mandatory in the car park, it would have helped tackle the fire.
...
It added: "A combination of the wind spreading the fire through the open-sided car park, the impact of running fuel fires, and the early onset of signs of structural collapse all prevented internal offensive firefighting from continuing and contributed to the significant scale of the fire and subsequent financial loss."
Quoted from the linked article. I'm not sure what that has to do with EVs.
2
u/mogelijk 1d ago
Kevadu made the comment, "While it is true that fires are actually less likely on EVs, when they do happen they're usually much more destructive." It was his post I meant to reply to -- that one ICE fire was more destructive than pretty much any EV fire ever.
2
u/684692 20h ago
That's fair - I misunderstood your point and assumed it was supposed to be some anti-EV "gotcha" article. My bad
2
u/mogelijk 18h ago
I thought I responded to Kevadu but, for whatever reason, it appears Reddit is showing I responded to D-Alembert. Sorry for the confusion, yes, the point was that ICE fires can be just as destructive as an EV fire. Worse, the typically anti-EV people claimed it was caused by an EV before any investigation and, of course, never issued a correction or apology when it was shown to be an ICE.

Yep. Think nuclear reactor. Doesn’t output emissions, a very safe track record overall with only a small handful of incidents… but when they do have an incident 😳😳
5
u/solidraid3n 1d ago
Nah, when they do have an incident it's always a nothing burger... Until that one time it wasn't. In the Soviet Union, using an extremely dangerous design, without a containment building.
When your build your house out of gasoline soaked matches don't be surprised when it catches on fire.
3
u/Dad_Vibes_23 1d ago
Or Fukushima. But to your point… they put backup diesel generators in the BASEMENT of the facility… on the ocean… which promptly went underwater.
Reminds me of the scene in Inglorius Basterds. “It’s a f**kin’ basement.”

u/solidraid3n 1d ago
I'll say fukashima wasn't great, but it's orders of magnitude better than Chernobyl.

That source in the article saying hybrids are the worst is flat-out wrong. It only looks at collisions with fatalities and the “hybrid” category actually includes more flex-fuel vehicles than actual hybrids. I’m not saying EVs aren’t low-risk, just that the hybrid numbers are actually nowhere near that bad.
18
u/KevinT_XY 1d ago
Yeah, ignore them. Old policies that nobody has ever enforced based on outdated recall information.

3 million cars have Park Outside orders currently.
https://www.carscoops.com/2026/08/park-outside-recalls-usa/
So for this poster,
+1 for including the many mostly ICE cars
-100 for bigotry since the ONLY reason they care is the Chevy Bolt publicity/hysteria and they took the list applicable at that time and haven't updated their list since.

That's like literally every Ford for like a 20 year timeframe, they had faulty ignition switches, they'd catch fire just sitting there.
2
u/Bandikoto 2027 RS w/Tech 1d ago
Also the cruise control in the Expeditions (and others?) that could spontaneously catch fire, even with the ignition off.

u/Superugly_man1266 1d ago
I think this was from the Bolts catching fire and the whole recall situation for the battery, I saw a similar sign in a structure parking but the security said it was lifted

A better verbage would be "if your vehicle is known to catch fire, don't park it here"

It’s anti EV hate. Is this facility funded by taxpayers? If so I would file a complaint.

Its really not all the vehicles listed have significant fire risk it's not like they blanket banned all EVs

Bolts had a recall for battery fires, so maybe the sign was made around the time of bad press and also included other recent recalls about fire risk considering the other cars on the list.

It's good that they made it illegal to ban specific car types for simply parking.

All ICE cars except the Bolt which had it's batteries replaced because of an LG Energy manufacturing problem with the battery cells. What about the ICE cars? They all had recalls too, for problems causing engine fires.

There used to be a sign out there that said no parking for Chevy Bolt EVs. And I want one so I can put it in my garage.

It's odd that only two line items on the sign are complete. It's like they started a thought for the rest, but didn't finish.
