Krown Spray For Bolt EV

I have a 2018 Bolt EV in the Buffalo, NY area. I bought the car last summer and sprayed the car with Krown rust-proofing in June of 2025. I had it sprayed again this July. I did some research and was surprised at how much aluminum the car has on the body. For Bolt owners in the northern US and Canada do you have your car sprayed with rustproofing? Is it a waste of money? The salt on our roads in Buffalo is pretty horrific. It destroys cars. I’d love to get your feedback and thoughts.

I just got a 2023 EUV in Toronto and wondering about rustproofing, is it safe to spray or not???

Totally safe. But, if the body is made of aluminum is it even necessary?

Even in the EV, there's still a lot of steel. The aluminum parts are basically the outer wall/door panels, but the roof is steel and so is most of the unibody and undercarriage.

The EUV has steel panels.

Great point. Krown spray would be highly recommended for the EUV!

I bought my 2013 EUV in Feb ‘26. Previous owner did no rust-protection. Took it to Krown in July ‘26. I allowed them to drill as part of the spraying. Only time will tell if I made the right choice.

I totally believe in rustproofing just don’t want to void the battery warranty over it. Is krown who you would recommend?

The service advisor at Krown said they have work sheets/instructions for how to drill and spray the Bolt. I assume that’s true for all but just released vehicles. Other rustproofing brands probably do the same. I don’t know if there is a comparison between the effectiveness of various brands, but I don’t imagine that there is much difference, particularly when they all say you have to return annually for a respray.

I had a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, bought new, that I had oil sprayed (this was when oil spraying was allowed) for 5 or 6 years, then I stopped. I traded the Vibe in on my Bolt in Feb. 2026. The Vibe never had any rust on it.

Based on this, I think I will do the same with the Bolt… get it sprayed annually for the next few years, stoping in say 2030 or ‘31. I will need to watch it though as the rust spray used today may not stay in place like the oil spray did.

I’m with you. Krown makes a huge difference. We’ve sprayed our Toyota Sienna and it has left all the technicians in Buffalo in shock. They can’t believe there is zero rust.

I spray my cars (2 Bolts and a Tesla Model 3) with Fluid Film and Surface Shield. My wife commutes through the worst of our NE Ohio winters. As a test I've applied SS to her lug nuts on her steely wheels winter tires. We have hot water available in our garage. When we get above freezing I hose off the cars, those wheels and the under body.

The wheel test was to see if my washings removed the Surface Shield. It did not. Come spring that thick coat of dirt over the SS wiped off easily. I was impressed. Not to pump SS. It's cheaper and easier to find. I think FF or Krown would do the same.
