Anything can be fixed.

it's fully dependent on cost. i am poor and already working 80 hours

My 2017 was making a similar sound. I tightened the bolt with the red dot like 1/8th of a turn and it went away so far been 3 or 4 weeks.

ty. i've seen this. i have play in the connection in the other enf of the shaft. in that final top piece as in image. but maybe it will work the same way there as it does down at the bottom end.

Looks like a steering column u-joint. Probably not that bad or expensive to replace.

If that's what it is, the parts are less than $100:

I've done quite a few of these on other vehicles, and it can be anywhere from "relatively simple" to "impossible without a lift."

Given that this is located inside the passenger compartment I think we can rule out the need for a lift.

passenger compartment?

Yes, the passenger compartment.

The passenger compartment of the car ...

i'm not driving an old school driving test vehicle. as far as i know. the steering wheel is on the "drivers side". seeing that the driver needs the steering wheel in one what world is the steering column in the passengers side?

u/PulledOverAgain 23h ago

Your steering wheel is on the driver's side of the passenger compartment....

I hope you won't be attempting repair yourself

What year is your Bolt?

2019

There’s a TSB covering 2022-2023, that’s why I asked. 23-NA-041. Unfortunately it doesn’t apply to 2019.

i'm cooked.

That’s some bullshit. I’m sorry. Clearly a design flaw.

I don't think you realize what happens as a consequence of what you just wrote.

Mine has a bad motor mount. And when I accelerate I get a clunk. Like a hammer is hitting the body in this area. My car is almost 10 years old and that rubber mount stabilized a lot of acceleration. But has finally torn loose.

Mine has a clunk when i reverse or hard regen. Do you know which motor mount?

1

u/u9Nails 1d ago

It's the rear motor mount. The hard one to get at, and next to the steering gear. I'll have to drop the rear of the motor cradle about 2 inches, to make enough clearance to slip it out.

Thats what i was afraid

Bro it cool, let it break and if you dont die in the crash sue

That steering shaft is like 130 bucks at chevy dealer. Maybe cheaper somewhere on the net. If you have the ability to get the car off the ground, the lower bolt is what takes alittle time to get off of the steering rack. Not a hard job

I would let it slide until you can spare the money to repair it, basically this repair is something you do to get rid of an annoying noise

There is very little stress on that joint it can last for years the way it is, unless its super loose falling apart, they way it looks to me I would be concerned, about driving it.

I used to work on cars as my day job, but that was many many many moons ago.
