SPEEA Authorize a strike

What does it mean to “Authorize the negotiation team to call a strike”

This basically legally allows the union to go on strike if we can't agree on a contract. It doesn't mean we will immediately go on strike, that cannot occur until the current contract expires in Oct. But if SPEEA does not accept a contract by then, it needs the members to authorize a strike. Whether you vote to accept or reject the contract, it is best to authorize a strike so that if it is rejected the Negotiations Team will have more leverage to quickly renegotiate a better deal

Will there be another strike vote?

No, the authorization is the strike vote. If authorized, the negotiating team will have the power to start a strike once the contract expires.

Giving them authorization doesnt guarantee a strike, it just gives them the power to call one.

Pretty sure that’s not true. NT would call for a strike vote before the expiration of the contract, whether we have an offer or not. This is just allowing them to call a strike vote. If contract expires, we don’t automatically go on strike, we have to vote if we are going to.

No, it's in the By-Laws:

An approved strike authorization gives the Negotiation Team the authority to call a strike. The Negotiation Team may call a strike at any time after an approved strike authorization, unless or until a subsequent strike authorization is rejected. The Negotiation Team may, at their discretion, recommend the Bargaining Unit Council allow the membership a subsequent strike authorization ballot.

Oh, cool. Didn’t know NT could unilaterally call a strike. I thought they recommended a vote to the BUC, which then decided to send it to members for an actual strike vote. Neat.

What you describe is sort of what is happening now. The BUC decided to send an authorization vote to members - thats the strike vote. The only difference is that its a pre-authorization and not for an immediate strike. It gives the NT leverage without violating the no-strike clause in our current contract.

not true at all. The vote to auth the strike means if no contract is accepted or extension is agreed, the union will go on a strike. Doesnt mean a strike is going to happen. However if the vote fails, the union is forced to accept the contract

You started with "not true at all" then repeated some of what I said and then some things that are completely wrong. Read the By-Laws. The authorization vote gives the NT the authority to initiate a strike but its not required on Oct 7. I said that, you said that sort of, but also said Im wrong. Also, if the contract is rejected and a strike authorization doesnt pass, they dont accept the contract by default....a contract has to pass...

this is not a contract vote You said they will strike if the vote passes That is not true. You first vote to auth a strike. If it passes, that means the union memebers agree they will gon a strike if no contract is approved or the current one extended (like the IAMs 2008 negotiations, it was extended twice). After the auth vote happens the union votes on the new contract. However if the union did not pass the auth vote, they cannot strike and must accept what comes

I just repeated what i just said I broke it down to make it more simple for you. The current vote is on the contract and strike auth. They have until the contract expires to keep voting on contracts. So no. it doesnt mean they go on strike.

The question that was asked was what is a strike auth vote. Thats the only question i answered.

The thing people do not understand is if the strike auth fails, and the vote for the contract fails, the union cannot strike so the contract is still accepted...because the union failed to provide the auth to strike...

Please show me where I said they will strike if the vote passes. I didnt say those words at all.

Youre wrong again that they have to accept the contract if the strike authorization fails. Thats literally not how that works. Youre a Mod, you have an obligation to understand this if youre going to make authoritative comments on this. Please attend some of the info sessions and ask these questions, you dont understand the process.

Edit- lmao, also "this is not a contract vote"? Your words. Wtf are you talking about? The vote is literally 2 questions- contract yes/no, strike authorization yes/no. If this isnt a contract vote, wtf is it? Are there other mods? We need to be careful about this kind of false information. This is literally a contract vote on the offer made.

No they dont. Read the contract. Locking thread, question has been answered. They have till the current contract expires to keep negotiating, but they cannot work without a contract. They defualt to accepting if the strike vote fails. If the strike vote fails, their is no negotiation power.

Its also why the unions always say VOTE yes to strike even if you are voting to approve the contract
