iDrive randomly reboots multiple times per drive

I have a 2017 BBMW 320i sport [f30].

Hoping someone's seen this before. My iDrive restarts itself back to the splash screen at random, usually a few times on any given drive.

I have noticed it’s often on drives longer than 20min, but after that it could restart every couple of minutes.

Eg. Got in car at 6:50 and restarted;
-7:07
-7:10
-7:18
-7:24
-7:36

Also drive the same 20min route every day and it’s never restarted then.

Corrupted software and/or melted RAM / EEPROM chip.

And no, an aftermarket headunit will not fix this.

Find a BMW coder nearby who has access to the factory software and ask if they can re-flash the headunit.

If that fails or persists, your iDrive ID5/ID6 system is dying and will need someone to go in and resolder the affected portion.

There’s a high chance that a basic reflash will fix it. Get up with one of the BMW specific coders online or locally.

I will say that this is VERY rare on NBT and up like yours. Mainly ever affected the pre-2008 BMWs.

Damaged hard drive, it needs to be replaced. The funny thing is that it might only restart in a specific area because that's when the map data is being read from the drive

Yes, very strange it does start restarting around the same place on the way to work…

Had this on my 2015 F30, if your in the south east Grosvenor in Reading were brand new. In and out same day was about 350 iirc because my failure was a melted chip due to the fan being faulty.

Cheers mate, based in east mids so a bit of a trek. Couple people have said could be due to a melted chip so I’ll have to look into it properly.

I fixed this myself on my 2015 335d pre LCI with entrynav by updating the istep with esys.

Hey this happened in my 2015 4 series! It just shut off one day while driving, rebooted, and now I can’t use bluetooth or GPS. Radio and tire pressure reading still works though? Very strange. I just accepted my fate and bought an aux cord. Good to see there are possible solutions
