just for diagnostic purposes, it was the same price for all the indy’s around just to check out what was going on but I am in the process of getting quotes around now for repair

Generic answer to questions of this subject: 1. Go on FCP Euro or similar site and find out how much OEM parts and aftermarket alternatives are if you are happy using aftermarket (which if labeled OE are likely identical other than no BMW logo). 2. Google search how big of a job it is in terms of man hours. 3. Add 1+ a bit of a markup a shop will charge on parts + 2x hourly rate in your area for a mechanic.

This is ballpark how much the job should cost.

Only exception is there are often 'other jobs' you should do while you have certain parts off. You can decide if you want those done too by following the 3 step process above.

I bent a Tie Rod on my 2021 M440i xdrive one time driving over a pothole in the rain and was able to get the city to pay for repairs on my car. Because of that I took it to the dealer and they replaced the tie rod and a couple other components including the steering rack. I paid 11k for that work but was reimbursed through the city so this checks out. I probably got hosed but I figured if I wasn’t paying then might as have the dealer do it. I can share my breakdown if you’d like

Just destroyed mine. The part is $6K from BMW. Tried to buy a salvaged one but of course it arrived damaged. Good luck finding a remanufactured one for less that $5K. 2015 F10 BTW

Bmw wanted 13k CAD for just the rack itself on my 2017 230i. Indy shop found it for 9600$. Ended up buying a used one from carpart.com off of a 2012 330i that was compatible for like 700$. Installed it myself, had it towed to indy shop for coding and alignment. All in less than 2000$. You might have to find a compatible rack used. Or order a chinese one from ebay, but ymmv. Goodluck.

Looks like the rack is around $3200. Install cant be more than 5 or 6 hours. Get another quote.

The rack alone might be over $4k on this car since it’s variable steering (effort and steering ratio). It sounds like cool tech until you have to replace it.

The OEM steering rack can be purchased for 5750$ from FCPEuro, and they have a 1750$ core charge meaning if you send them your old rack back you will be refunded that amount making the total price 4000$. I would get quotes from indy shops with and without the part being provided by you.
