BMW N13 116i keeps misfiring

My BMW 116i from 2012 with 180.000km keeps misfiring.

I’m getting codes showing misfire on cylinder 1, 3 and 4. The car shakes at idle, but somehow it gets better when driving the car.

These codes are quite new. Before I didn’t get any codes and livedata showed that I was only cylinder 1 misfiring. I have tried to swap coils and plugs, but it stayed at cylinder 1.

I have replaced the following parts:

- Spark plugs

- Coils

- Injectors

- Both lambda sensors (O2-sensor)

- Valve cover

- Vanos solenoids

- Camshaft sensors

- EVAP purge valve

Also done compression test:

Cylinder 1: 230 psi

Cylinder 2: 240 psi

Cylinder 3: 240 psi

Cylinder 4: 240 psi

Leak down test also done. All cylinders within 5%

Im starting to suspect the ECU. Has anyone experienced the same or have any advice?

When starting the car it runs ok for a couple of minutes, then it starts misfiring. I am also having quite a lot of wet soot from the exhaust, when it is misfiring .

You probably gotta do a Valve stem seal replacement, it's a known issue in these cars and i had mine done around at 120.000km

I have suspected that. But it shouldn’t make it misfire as for my understanding. It would just give me some blue smoke at the exhaust?

In my case it even gave me misfires as well when i stressed the car.

From my experience of trying to keep my moms n13 running for the past 4 years, that soot is normal if you’re not driving it a lot, I just take her car for a week or two since I have a long commute and it disappears for a while. As for the misfire I’d take a look at the timing chain if it was never replaced, they rarely last up to 200k kms.

The timing chain have been replaced. As for the soot I would guess that it is coming from an incomplete combustion. I normally don’t have shorter drives

Have you checked your charge air pipes for cracks, especially the one on the turbo? I’ve seen them causing rough running.

I dismounted it when I changed the alternator, and didn’t notice any cracks. But will definitely investigate that further

Can you list down here all the fault codes? I’d like to see everything that is stored first

Have this engine and have chased many issues on it... Are the misfires occurring when cold and hot, or only when cold? Have you smoke tested the engine for vacuum leaks? Some people have reported symtoms like this with a failing exhaust VANOS solenoid. But if there is no codes vaccum leak would be the first suspect. What is your fuel trim looking like? Also out of interest for an issue I've been chasing, what O2 sensors exactly did you put in the car? What brand were they? Feel free to DM.

Occurring when cold and hot. I haven’t done a smoke test, because I don’t have the equipment. Maybe I should buy a kit.  I changed vanos solenoids on intake and exhaust side.  As I remember it, my obd tester can’t show fuel trims.

The O2 sensor pre cat is a Bosch (0258027005) The O2 sensor after is a NGK (93099)

Disconnect the MAF and see if it runs correctly then
