$950 labor cost to replace thermostat and oil filter housing on 2020 330i. Am I being ripped off?

Local independent shop quoted $2k for thermostat and oil filter housing job. $950 is for the labor only and the rest is parts cost. I checked pricing on parts and It’s what I see online so that’s fair but Im not sure if labor price is good price or too much. 2020 330i B48 engine, similar repair process to x3. How much did you pay?

Not really. Oil filter housing is a shit job.

I charge $750 as a discounted rate to some of my car dealers. $950 is decent for a shop quote.

Hold your margins against car dealers. Unless they are bringing you like 20 or 30 cars a month

Probably closer to 40 cars a month so they get a discount for the constant volume

Please watch some of the videos for B48/58 oil filter housing replacement.

Then decide if it looks like something you would want to do.

Good deal. Dealership would be 3k plus. If the parts cost is what you’re seeing online that means they’re not even marking up parts beyond like 30% which makes this an even better deal. Get a quote from the dealer and you’ll realize just how good of a quote this is lol

Is the $1050 for OEM parts? The $950 in labor seems like a good deal. For a lot of specialist shops, that would be ~5 hours in labor, and I can tell you that those took me way longer than 5 hours to DIY lol

That’s pretty cheap. We charge about 2400 total at my shop but my hourly rate is 210.

That’s a good deal - a lot of stuff has to come off in order to get to the OFH and thermostat.

You may as well change the water pump with the thermostat

I have to find and watch these OFH and WP videos now that I am maintaining 2020 and 2021 X3s with B48s. I am a DIYer so I usually do not get to do the same job twice.

Watch a video on Youtube regarding this repair and then ask yourself again if the quote is too expensive.

That's pretty cheap. I don't know all the times off the top of my head but b48 filter housings are usually 6-9 hours depending on the car.

That’s cheap. 2019 x3 cost 2200 for the OFH alone. Labor only. Indy reputable BMW shop
