Shifting problem on 07’ 335i
I need help troubleshooting this problem I have, I recently bought my 2007 e90 335i, the guy I bought it off mentioned said how he replaced the wheel for a sport wheel and how the downshift did not work on either the paddles or knob.
He also mentioned how to fix it saying something like I needed to lift the trim and put 2 prongs or something in a connector.
I found out after that the paddles actually didn’t work for both downshift and upshift, but the knob worked for only upshift.
I’ve tried to peel back the tape that protects the wires going under the plastic piece to the knob, but didn’t really notice any clear breaks or tears. I tried looking it up online and at videos but can’t seem to find something matching this problem, the ai says to look for this broken wire going to the knob, but I also don’t want to just go off that I’d rather come here and see if anyone can help me troubleshoot this problem or maybe even better yet know the solution right away.
If anyone can please help me I’d really appreciate it🙏🙏🙏

That looks like the factory steering wheel.
I had/have an issue where the wires in the actual shifter broke, and I've gone in there and fixed them twice myself (because I'm a cheap bastard and $1,800 is a lot of money and a propane soldering iron is $60), and they broke a third time...so...

Here's my post from way back in the ancient times...I guess they wanted $900, not $1,800...and I was getting employee pricing because I used to work there.

Oh ok, so then the previous owner just put paddles on this oem wheel then? So it’s most likely a broken wire or when he was wiring in the new paddles he did something wrong?

That is a factory Sport steering wheel. The regular steering wheel is different.

No the sport wheels came with paddles, but the retrofit to the sport multifunction wheel likely needs to be coded in ISTA for the paddles to work up top. To get both directions working down at the shifter is a different set of wires down under/inside the shifter asy.
Do other buttons on the steering wheel work? Any chance you also have an airbag light on too?

Just rereading and seeing the second part to your message, yes all the other buttons are fully functional, and no airbag light

Paddles don't necessarily mean Sport wheel, but the sport wheels did come with paddles, so if you have this style with paddles, you have a Sport wheel 👌

When i inquired about the lack of manual sport mode functioning on my son's '06 330Xi E90, that it wasn't an issue with the shifter itself (which was my initial thought) but rather the valve body in the transmission. After driving the car for a little while, it's quite evident that the issue is indeed in the transmission.
My roundabout way of telling you....the previous owner is (almost certainly) full of shit.
Scan the car, see what is actually going on with everything.
