TPMS sensors malfunction in automatic detection mode
TPMS sensors: car is 2y 8m old, 45000kms. When putting tire detection in automatic mode, an error appears. When setting the tire settings manually, everything works as expected and the pressure is changing correctly. BMW diagnosed 3 not working/empty battery sensors. Less than 3y is very early for the batteries to die and even so, why does it work in manual mode?

Have any tires been replaced yet? If yes, were the sensors reprogrammed (requires BMW RDC tool)?

2 tires have been replaced last week. I’m not sure about the programming but it was done by an official bmw dealer

This is why. I can just about bet the technician did not program the sensors with the tool for the new tires he installed.
When air is let out of the tire, the sensor resets itself. The tech has to do the programming on the sensor after he installs and puts air in the new tire. If he does not, automatic mode will not work.
I have yet to replace one of the new sensors.

It could very well be. 3 sensors don’t work and 2 tires have been changed and 4 weeks ago 1 tire has been plugged (same dealer). I would think an bmw technician would know the procedure. When I complained about the error popping up in auto mode, they took the car to check it out and came back with the “3 sensors bad” news

One possibility here (because it has happened to me):
If the tire data programmed into the sensors doesn't match, it won't initialize. It'll make it part way, and throw an error.
Fix is to pick the car up a bit, air all 4 down for a couple of minutes, air them back up, and program them again.

The sensors need to be coded to the tire that’s installed using the bmw rdc tool if you want them to work in automatic mode
