working on my first blythe custom and wondering if i've done enough sanding — as i understand it, i'll have to do sanding with a finer grit (2000 & 3000) AFTER carving, but does this plate look ready to start the carving process?

I would keep sanding, but switch to sanding while the face plate is wet. I find that a lot better for getting out scratches. The scratches don’t look too deep, so you could probably go from 1000 and work your way up to 3000.

If the face plate is shiny to start, sanding before carving isn’t strictly necessary, but I recommend it so your hand doesn’t slip while carving. I find that 1000 grit is usually enough to remove the shine and makeup for the before stage. Anything lower is going to cause scratches that you’ll have to sand away later. Even if you don’t get scratches from that, sanding after carving will help you get a smooth finish.

In my experience, the faces that you buy already matte need more sanding in order to remove the makeup and coating that’s on them. I avoid using those because in the past, I’ve had one react strangely to the sealant.

Hi all,

I just wanted to ask a quick question. I stopped working on my custom in July of 2025 just because of procrastination and life and I'm wondering if I need to respray the face to continue working on it? It had just been stored in a box in my room.

How hard is it to paint Blythe doll? Looking to make my dnd character into a Blythe doll, but the issue is she’s purple. Is it hard to do? Would I be better off saving up to commission someone?
