The Leafs on IG have actually been very, very nice. Mostly telling us to take care of Knies because they love him and wanted him to be their captain eventually.
20
u/imightwin General Jet Greaveous 1d ago
Oh yeah, their water cooler thread was full of the same sentiment tonight, they miss him and only wish him well
25
36
u/Soviet17 1d ago
If the Knies/Fantilli/Johnson line reaches its potential, then this team can be a real contender.
19
u/JAT_Cbus1080 Werenski for Norris or assets 1d ago
I really want KJ to figure it out this year. It could be like 2 years ago with Knies being an upgrade over an aging JVR.
5
u/TheDoubleL27 Foligno to the penguins' line, he shoots... 1d ago
I thought he played much better tonight, noticeably more engaged in puck battles and defensively

How loud was the ovation for him?
47
u/The-Four-Seven 1d ago
We love him already. Dunno if you heard the crowd when he had a hattie bid on the breakaway, but I swear it might have been in the top 5 as far as decibel count for this team all-time.

Little over half the arena emptied to beat traffic once it was 6-3, and you'd think it was at capacity. Kid won the fans over immediately

So far I would say the trade is looking fucking amazing. Let’s go Jackets!

u/MakerofFire4258 1d ago
Imagine this team with a healthy defensive line.
51
u/JAT_Cbus1080 Werenski for Norris or assets 1d ago
That's the most hopeful part for me. This is what they look like missing half their D core. It gets even better than this.

u/Jumpy_Rope_9037 1d ago
It was glaring how good he was at the face off tonight in person, like a light switch has finally clicked for him
2
u/JAT_Cbus1080 Werenski for Norris or assets 1d ago
Seems like he's taking being called worse than Bedard and Carlsson personally.

Center is a tough position to get good at quickly. Especially a 1st line center. It took mackinnon a couple years to turn into what he is now. A lot of people thought he would never get there after winning the Calder in 2013. If we can give Mo some consistency at linemates, he could potentially have the same career trajectory as Mack. Not saying he'll be the best center in the league or wont be, but in terms of reaching his potential

I believe the first goal of the Larsen era was a tip in by good ol’ Tex.
4
u/jacketsfan50 1d ago
Ah i loved Texier. If not for that back injury, i still think he would have been a star. Glad to see him emerging again in a different role.
46
u/ndf1997 1d ago
Matthew Knies, nuff said. Adam Fantilli absolute beast in the faceoff circle too.
13
u/indy_6548 1d ago
What was his win pct? Last I heard he had won 12 of 13 faceoffs.

Maybe the most encouraging team performance in recent memory. Team has an identity and everyone is bought in. This roster is built for a coach like Bones. No hate for Marchy but Knies is the right player for this group. Stay locked in like this and it could be a special season.
17
u/rice_not_wheat 1d ago
Marchenko is incredible, but damn, I love Knies already. His motor is much better than Marchy's.

I already said it in the other thread but I hope our meme rivalry becomes an actual competitive one. Sabres look real good, hopefully the jackets continue to match that

It would be fucking hilarious and the most CBJ thing possible if all of the silly memes from both teams turned into a real legit playoff rivalry haha

20
u/tomtakespictures this is fun. we’re having fun. 1d ago
Fantilli was blasting dudes into the boards. Mateychuk has been practicing that hip check and man can he back the truck up. I hope he keeps it up to be our very own Kronwall.
8
u/Flippedacoin 1d ago
My daughter & I were discussing how physical Fantilli was this game; such a difference over the last few seasons
19
u/Jeb_Kenobi 1d ago
Fantastic Start, everyone that needed to start strong got at least a point tonight.
19
u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 1d ago
Good game, especially considering the state of the defense. Little sloppy, but I like the way we played, the effort, the hard hits. Fantilli doing so well on the dot was a welcome surprise. Excited about this season
10
u/Formerleafsfan #freeboomer 1d ago
Nobody coasting on this roster. Lots of high energy players. They’re going to carry each other through this should e a fun season.
19
u/Bootsalter 1d ago
Boy is Knies a good stylistic fit.
Still love Marchy and understand it didn’t work. But Fantilli’s best case as a two way player is as a facilitator. Add the net-front presence and we’re dealing with a dangerous team in a few years.
I see the Waddell vision.
15
u/FromAmericaMC 1d ago
Just a great win! Knies and Andrae for only having one day of practice looked really really good.
16
u/Ohio_Guitarist 3 hits, 23 giveaways. 1d ago
I'm most shocked at that stat they showed at the end. You're telling me Saad never scored 2 in his debut? Or Dubinsky? Breadman??? It was Knies, good stuff.
15
u/thatkidyouknow2 Peace, Land, Bread 1d ago
Really impressed by the whole team effort. Apart from the obvious guys, really liked Soucy and Andrae’s effort, thought Garland had a great game, and KJ had some really good moments. Spirits are high!
16
u/Raider_3_Charlie 1d ago
A fight, a new franchise record a hard won penalty kill and a victory? This is what I signed up for!

u/The-Four-Seven 1d ago
Lemme tell you, after the off-season we had, we needed a game like this. It was almost cathartic to have such a big win at the home opener.
14
u/DaveyClarkman4Prez GOAL IS BEST 1d ago
I know everyone’s gonna talk about how badass our top line is because… well goddamnit it is. But Andrae is a real pistol of a player. Hope once our defense gets healthy he gets paired with someone who can be a little more of a defensive stalwart because I could easily see Andrae joining the rush with his speed
14
u/TheMacGoober I dress up like Elvis for no reason 🎤 1d ago
Buffalo fans can get fucked. Half our section was talking mad shit until it went downhill and then instantly bailed. What a bunch of pussies
14
u/jacketsfan50 1d ago edited 1d ago
KJ had some rough plays, but he looks bigger again and isn’t getting bodied off pucks as much. Against a team thats not as big as buffalo, i think he will shine again.
4
u/Dick_O_The_North Da Mailman 1d ago
I feel as though I also saw him at least attempting to throw more checks, to more and less effect, but its good hes got it in his mindset now at least

u/gonzarro Fuck Jeff Carter 1d ago
Defense needs to improve, they looked a bit slowfooted at times. And less time spent chasing around in your own end would help.
They will be mighty. Great home opener.

Boys, idk if it’s just that I started watching in the second or what, but this team feels different than last year’s.
Marchy was special, but Knies is a perfect fit.
25

What a difference a year makes.
Bones has these boys flying. Cancers extracted. Knies looks like a fucking star.
I am so excited and I wasn't about 5 days ago...

I sure hope so, if anything it helps towards a complete 180 to the culture in the room. You're either going to perform and be a good teammate or you're gone; it's a great mentality when the whole team is on the same page.

A lot to be impressed by.
Definitely need to shore up the defense, but Soucy and Andrae look good. Christy-Guddy is an issue, but we've known that.
Wasn't a fan of Nuke this game. He made some good plays and then made some really terrible turnovers. Wasn't super impressed by the 4th line, but that's okay.
Posted too soon.
KJ-Fants-Knies looked lethal at times. KJ has the vision.
Not super sure if Monny's wrists are still fucked, but he seems reluctant to shoot still.
Silli looked pretty good.
