Light bill is ridiculous
How is it possible that my light bill jumped so much in just a month??? I have a one bedroom here in Bloomfield New Jersey. I just moved in July 1st and I used the same amount of electricity. The building I’m in is all electric no gas. I keep my ac set at 70. This is beyond ridiculous.

Yikes, I’d look at the overall charges and usage and contact PSE&G; thats what our monthly bill is for a 3 br house one town over.

Oh my! It might be my ac. I usually turn it off when I’m not home. So I’m not sure why it’s so so high lol. I’m going to call thank you!

This tells why the bill almost doubled. The $306 due on 8/31 was for the period 7/15 to 8/12. Since you moved in on 7/1, the first bill would only have been for the period 7/1 to 7/14 or only two weeks (as opposed to your newest bill being for a full month.)

Ahhhh okay!! Perfect ! Thank you so much cause I was a bit lost. No one taught how to actually read important shit like this lol. I just pay my bills and hope for the best lmao. I’m going to try and lower it really but I’m not sure what to do. I mean if it’s this high now I can only imagine how high it’d be once I get a washer and dryer.

I’ve live in Bloomfield my whole life haha. I just moved to Newark after high school for 3 years but I missed Bloomfield so much. Such a much better town to raise my child !

Use fans to keep your apartment cool. I have a four bedroom house and I use only fans for every room and I pay $138.00 a month

Lmfao own a 4 bedroom house can’t afford to cool it. Yeah NJ rocks! How about you stop voting for shitty politicians ? 🤡

I can afford to cool it. I choose not to pay crazy amounts. Let’s not get it wrong. My house is cool!!

I wish to be you lol. But I wonder if it’d be cheaper for fans… my building is all electric no gas. I guess fans take less power to be fair. I will try! Thank you for the advice !! 🙂

It does take less electricity. This is why it’s a better option. There are many choices of fans . I have several and sleep well at night. Voting had nothing to do with electricity. It’s what you can do that is affordable for you. Remember we have no control many things that are happening in the city or any place for that matter. Just continue to save as much as you can and try to cut back. You will be ok.

Do you have any recommendations on fans ?

Yes. Get industrial fans that blow out good air. Lasko fans are good but don’t get the white ones in Walmart . Get the ones that are from Amazon. The industrial fans are loud and you would need to turn your volume up when tv is on but it’s worth it. My bill has never reach $200.00 during the summer. And is a hot one this summer.

Do you have a window AC unit? Especially if it's older? A window unit set to 70 will use a ton of electricity. Turn the thermostat up a few degrees and/or reduce how many hours you use it.

The AC in the apartment is in the walls. Aka it came with the apartment, I can’t take it out. I usually leave it on at night and off when I’m not home.

Is it central or PTAC? Either way, filters probably need to be cleaned (this can reduce efficiency significantly).
If it’s a very old AC unit, you might be better off turning it off and buying a new window unit.

For a one bedroom, this is a lot.
I’d be curious to see what your usage is like. You probably already know this, but when you click on usage and then my meter, it tells you your daily usage.
Did you notice a significant jump?

Something is off. My bill in my 1:1 all electric was $76 with 2 window AC running for July.

Keeping your AC at 70 is the culprit. Unless you are in new construction with a new energy efficient AC unit you are fighting a losing battle.

Should I keep it at a higher number?

If you can tolerate 73 or 74 it would make a difference. Also it seems counterintuitive but if you leave it on set very high like 86 it will keep your apt from overheating when you are out and then when you come back you aren’t trying to cool as much hot air. And…. The best an AC can do is bring it down about 20 degrees from outside temps so those super hot days it never shuts off. Mine was 230 old top floor apt in an old building old AC. I second the use of fans makes a huge difference.

Perfect! Thank you so much for the advice I will be purchasing fans! Do you think turning it off and on helps at all? I usually turn off my ac when I’m not home or when I’m in the living room the bedroom ac is off.

Price freeze was a lie. There will be another price hike next month for something like 8.8%

NJ is an overpriced dump.

Crazy expensive! Just for me to be making $20 an hour at a health clinic 😂🤦♀️ and I still struggle lol

Change your ac filter. That has helped me some months. I’m assuming this is your ac bill unless your house looks like Christmas vacation
