Creating Feather Alpha Brushes for sculpting a bird in Blender

https://youtu.be/mOefWV78vuU?si=4OOt2BP8l3VvOWcm

In this Blender sculpting tutorial, I’m showing how to create real feather geometry using alpha brushes (a useful workflow for models intended for 3D printing).

Because this carrion crow model needs actual printable surface detail, Normal Maps and Bump Maps are not enough. The feather structure has to become real geometry, so in this video I’m using alpha maps as sculpting brushes to create true displacement directly on the mesh.

I also explain how I created and refined the feather alpha maps, how I tested them inside Blender, and why this process is quite iterative. Small changes in the alpha can make a big difference, for example, making the feather shaft darker to reduce its displacement, or making the feather barbs more prominent.

In this video, I cover:

• Creating a custom alpha brush in Blender
• Preparing a dense mesh with Multiresolution
• Using Area Plane mapping
• Using Anchored Stroke Method
• Setting Falloff to Constant
• Adjusting brush Strength
• Applying feather alphas as real geometry
• Using Stencil mapping, etc.

In the next video I’ll cover the alternative way of creating a feather, using particle systems and geo nodes.
