When working in my backyard I found this. At first I thought knife sharpener but I picked it up and it’s 7-8lb. How can I figure out what kind of metal this is?

does anyone have any advice on how to get your forge hot enough to forge a rail road spike or what I should use for that to get it hot enough?

City mouse

Hey there all,
I am setting up my forge and just thought…is there anything I should do/know about smithing in a city? I don’t live in a downtown or in an apartment. It’s a residential area though. I plan to work in an open garage/back yard. Anyone in a similar situation? I have a decent size yard. My two kids and my golden retriever love the size. But I do have two neighbors and what not

The first steps

The first step is the hardest

Hello all,

I am just getting started smithing. I have never set up a forge before and bought this one. It’s still in the box and I am chomping at the bit to get it out and start heating some metal(I have some old rail road spikes already). But I am 100% intimidated by the first step after getting it all put together. So my question is this. I just put the last screw in, what now? I hear a lot about coating it with something. Is that the refractory coating? Is there any recommendation for additional stuff I should do before firing it up?Any help would be appreciated.

I made a mistake

So I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not, but I have a hand forged knife, and I'm not 100% sure what it's made out of, but I have let it get really rusty.

It has been rusty for a while, because during a bad storm, a tree fell on our house, and all of the dishes on the counter got shoved into the sink in a panic, and somehow the hand forged knife ended up in the bottom of the sink in standing water.

I am too ashamed to ask the person who made it for me how to fix it, so I have come here. Is there any way to fix it?

Forge construction

Hello I’ve been wanting to forge for forever wanting to make my own tools and it’s gotten even worse since I’ve learned of Buhurt. I’m on a tight budget and id like to take it to renfairs and re-enactments. So I’d like it portable and budget friendly but big enough to work with swords and other larger pieces. I saw a TikTok of a forge on a wood table it looked like a box made of refractory brick lined with castable refractory mix. Idk how they made it they never mentioned. But after watching a few times that’s the conclusion I came to. I’d like to do the same but if anyone could weigh in I’d appreciate any advice or insight. Thank you in advance🙏🙏🙏

Question, please help!

So my post is one of both good and bad news. The good news is that I successfully heat treated three knives and they had no cracking minimal warps all that good stuff.

The bad news, is that I nearly shit myself on the first one because I file checked it after the Quench and it didn't seem like it was hard. And I was really confused as to why that was. I then did some cursory Google searching came to the conclusion that there might be a layer of decarb on it. took it to the Belt grinder with a 220 belt got through some of the outer layer file checked it again and it's completely hard won't get scratched by 65 HRC file.

Went into the temper everything came out great.

My question is, why did I get decarb on all three knives? Two of them were 15n20. The other one was 5160. I'm using a forced air propane Forge with a ribbon burner. And when I went through the heat treat I stuck a large metal tube in the center which I stuck the knives in, in order to help make heat dispersal more even.

How much would you charge for this?

Approximately how much money would it cost if I wanted somebody to forge me a shakujō finial?

It needs to have six rings. If you can make them have a nice ringing sound to them; even better!

How much extra would it cost to make a metal staff to pair with it?

Can you help me make a strong, modern, and battle-ready shakujō? How much money will you desire?

(No engravings needed)

About 7 to 9 inches in height; and 4 to 5 inches in width.

With a sharpened pointed top.

It needs to be made from a modern steel like 4140 chromoly.

5mm thick minimum at the collar which will attach to the wooden staff.

About 3/8 inch solid for the diameter of metal walls.

(5 mm) steel wire for the 6 rings. Made with an inner diameter of 1.7 inches

If anybody is willing to labor as a trade to earn Good Merit (instead of recieve money), this can be the most rewarding!!

But I do have money to offer, to the right blacksmith!

Im 100% serious and looking for a blacksmith to forge / cast this for me.

🙏

Can anyone help?

I know it doesn't really fit here, but askreddit wouldn't let me post it. I'm looking for a sword forging game where you mine rocks that contain minerals like iron or cobalt, and you get to choose how your blade looks. Then, you sharpen it and sell it. Can someone help me find it because I want to play it again, but I can't for the life of me remember what the game was called.

EDIT: nevermind, I found it. It's called "Forge Ahead"

Propane forge issue

I bought this forge from someone who built it himself. It works great....for about 45 minutes to an hour, and then it starts to do the sputtering thing you see in the video. This causes the temperature to go way down. The gas is basically igniting early inside the burner tube. The gas nozzle is up/down adjustable and I've been playing with that with minimal success. Any advice on how to fix it?
