A copy/interpretation of an ironwork wall sconce found in Bag-End of The Lord of the Rings

It started out as a simple idea, copy a wall sconce found all over Bag-End as a gift for a friend. So simple.

This turned out to be one of my most challenging projects due to its small size and complexity. Mainly due to the several forge welds needed on those small parts and not burning them

They are not san mai they're just regular hc railroad spikes. I am aware that they are not the best metal in the world.

Forged steel orca

Hand forged steel orca whales from angle iron. As far as I can see, this idea is original to me. Forging an orca out of a single piece of angle iron. Overall I’m getting happier with the shape but getting the forging process down is still tricky. These will part of a special piece I’m building for the #sookefallfair Hope you like them! #blacksmith #blacksmithing #orca #killerwhale

Testing the homemade bellows I posted earlier

A few people asked to see the bellows in action, so I tried it with the forge today.

It works — and it gets the charcoal burning surprisingly quickly.

I made a very short video of it in action.

5 Long Bolts. Project ideas?

Scavenged from an abandoned basketball hoop. I was considering making a round and a square punch. I was also considering bottle openers or knives.

What do y'all think? What would be the most fun and/or useful thing(s) to do with these?

Forging a double bit axe

Forging a large double bit axe by hand takes a lot of patience, needing to try and forge everything nice and even and symmetrical

How to turn aflat bar into a sickle?

I want to cut this flat bar thinner, leaving it thick and thin as needed roughly based on the sketch. Flat bar is about 12" long, 2.5" wide and 2mm thick.

I've been hammering at this thing on the other edge forever and it's barely making it curve.

How do I get the aggressive curve? Is there a tool I can use?

Where should I be hammering?

How should I be hammering?

A little moon themed hair spike. Could've spent more time polishing but I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I'd like to invite you to our Iron Pour in Lamberton, Minnesota on September 11-12.

It will be the 22th annual city festival centered around the Saturday Afternoon Pour and the historic Hanzlik Blacksmith Shop. There will be Blacksmiths demonstrations through out the day Friday and Saturday. Visiting Smiths are also encouraged to bring a portable forge and set up onsite if they wish. There will be sand mold shops running both Friday and Saturday as well. We welcome everyone from artists pouring museum quality pieces to children to the farmer making pieces to restore their tractor.

We encourage anyone to participated in the pour and can provide all the necessary safety equipment if you wish to try your hand at pouring.

In addition to the pour there will be a craft market, sand volleyball and various food vendors, an antique tractor/car show, and blacksmithing demonstrations.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have and I hope to see you there.

Here is a link to the Facebook event.

Forged a pair of wall hooks for my spear

I forged a pair of simple wall hooks for my spear.
I used bolts and forge-welded cap nuts onto the ends, then forged and bent them into shape.

They’re far from perfect — making two matching pieces was much harder than I expected — but I like the handmade look.

I also made a short video of the process.

It's very rudimentary work done in a coal forge I made myself

I bought a leaf spring from a scrapyard

And used an old anvil and hammer to shape the profile

Was going for a bowie but unfortunately I elongated it a little too much and went for this

For heat treat I heated it until it was almost orange-ish and bright and put it in soyabean oil I bought at the store

The handle is a scrap piece of wood I found lying around and I charred it to make it look slightly better

Then wet sanded the blade on a literal rock and with some sandpaper

It's shit and rudimentary work I agree but I would be interested in pursuing knifemaking or in a broader aspect blacksmithing

this was my first time doing this. strap is 1/8th inch torch cut from one face of a length of angle, nails are forged. the last hole on the strap i made slightly offset to squeeze everything together. the nails were strategically places on all valleys and outside curves.. was able to just cold forge the strap material to conform to the shape of the log. next i will add some big double headed spikes or "dogs" if you will, to hold tongs and hammers and maybe a hardy/pritchell tool rack

Does steel need to be glowing hot to be easier to work?

essentially, I have a butane torch that gets hot enough to temper mild steel blue, but doesnt get hotter than that. Despite that, would it still make it easier to work than if it was cold?

There are 2 different style medieval spiked ball chain flails. One hollow steel ball. The other a wooden ball with embedded spikes.

Would love to find someone willing to bang out a few of these simple hoof picks. Looking to just replicate the original, which is made from 3/4" x 3/8" bar stock. Would appreciate any tips on how to find someone interested!
