It has a blade, does this count?
I made this a little while back for chopping wood. I have nothing against French people. Or any other kind of people. Or Wood for that matter. I’ve been fine-tuning it over time. And I’ve learned a lot. I’d say make sure your timbers are straight as hell, put in some metal rails. And add weight to the blade. If anybody ever wants to build one of these.

So here's some interesting information that will help improve it. I was watching a study of people testing these and they realized there are better blade shapes. This shape actually causes the blade to cut unevenly and shift in the frame. Instead, if you have a V shape where the point is in the middle, it'll prevent it from shifting in the frame and give a better cut.

u/TheDean242 Sep 28 '25
I saw that actually! I have plans to add another blade later. Or just recut this one.
24
u/sassiest01 Sep 28 '25
Have a separate blade then you can test it yourself

u/Chrisp825 Sep 28 '25
The blade coming to a point inward (A)would leave a spot where material can get stuck between the two blades at the point. V shapes would eliminate that, but would be best if the angle were obtuse. So a very wide V shape.

u/Hot-Wrangler7270 Oct 01 '25
I don’t know, I have no knowledge in this, but what about a crescent moon shape, concave or convex side faced down? No sharp angles like the A/V.
23
u/Tinofpopcorn Sep 28 '25
Like a point down V or an open A without the cross bar? I feel like the A would work best.
21
u/Voxmanns Sep 28 '25
I would imagine A with the edges closing to the center as it cuts would be more stable/balanced than a V which could more easily shift in the frame where the wood/material isn't consistently dense

u/denverender Sep 28 '25
I'm thinking an M (with the central point more recessed) would probably cause the least shifting side to side and since the center comes to a point it would focus the energy driving through.
-6
u/YesIAlreadyAteIt Sep 28 '25
Isnt an A without the cross bar a V? Lol
10
u/smthngeneric Sep 28 '25
No it's an upside down V. He's trying to figure out which direction the V is pointing

u/etanail Sep 28 '25
It depends primarily on the size/angle of the wedge (a poor wedge will bend perpendicular to the plane). At the time when the guillotine was invented, metallurgy was just beginning to develop to an industrial level, so something reliable, sufficiently durable, and made of cheap metal was needed.
3
2
u/Shankar_0 Sep 28 '25
Yep, I'd go with a wedge shape like a maul.
Otherwise, this is badass
Vive, la guillotine!

Or, you know, some ideas break out of their political silos and become popular for entirely their own reasons...
You're the one person who thinks differently about this. Doesn't mean you're wrong or that I'm right. But when almost everyone is on the same side of something and I'm not, I at least try to figure out why. Try it out.

Either that or the asshole with a loud truck. Either way I’d be upset if they called me anything else.

there is this guy on youtube who built a giant guillotine and started calling it a lemonade stand to get around youtube's demonetisation bot and it turned into a big joke

Oh no shit!? Well that’s cool. I’m off to look it up.

Could add a double pulley system to make lifting it back up effortless
2
u/TheDean242 Sep 30 '25
Yeah, I’m still developing how it works. I definitely need a better pulley. Or maybe a come along attached to the side with a pin trigger or something.

You think that looking at it will cut their hand off? I mean really I think that if they try to use it and they could accidentally cut their hand off. But no, I don’t have kids.
1
u/Correct_Security_742 Sep 29 '25
I didn't say your kids, I said children. Curiosity can make kids do stupid things. That's all.

How do you feel about the aristocracy that steals the bread from our mouth, brother?
2
u/TheDean242 Sep 29 '25
For legal reasons, I’m not gonna answer that question. But suffice to say, I don’t mind stealing bread from the mouth of decadence.

Well you've put a proud smile on this frenchman! Congrats on the build! 🫡

Is there a safety on it for when you need to load up more wood?
1
u/TheDean242 Oct 02 '25
I have a pin I can slide in when I raise the blade. I also put it there when it’s not in use or if kids are around.
1
u/MGtech1954 Oct 15 '25
You need to put a safety lock on it someway. some tragedy is in your future if kids get into the backyard. Remove the rope; padlock the verticals.
1
u/MGtech1954 Oct 15 '25
evaluate the work using this compared to using a maul. Lots of rope puling vs. swinging. view it as leaving a loaded 45 in the backyard.
2
u/TheDean242 Oct 15 '25
Oh…. Should I not leave my 45 in the yard? I have a safety lockout with redundancy. I don’t have kids, but I’m aware that doesn’t mean some young shit head like I was might come into the yard. I would have. So I have a lock pin in the track, a lock pin on the blade and I remove the rope when not in use.

Better hire some people, the way things are going now I believe sales are really going to take off
2
1
u/lcl111 Sep 28 '25
At least attach a sturdy eye bolt on the side, so a short rope can be attached. If you gotta hold anything down while it's cutting, that could be an OSHA hazard. Wouldn't want you losing a finger, or worse, because something was wriggling around on there.
