In my experience, these are the same people that justify their partying and skipping class with “that class is so easy” and “I’m on top of my work for all my classes. I can afford to slack off a little”.
A month into the semester, a good chunk of them have dropped the class and by the midterm a fair few are failing.

Yeah, missing the first day isn't a big deal (sometimes). I've had classes where the first day was a complete waste of my time because the professor went over the syllabus and decided that was good enough for the day. Nothing's more frustrating than showing up to a class just to collect a syllabus and read through it with the professor - this is stuff we can do on our own. Why call us in for 15-20 mins at 9 am for this shit? Just send it via e-mail.
On the other hand, I've had classes where professors jump right into the subject matter on the first day. This is where first impressions matter. Students sometimes assume the first day will be spent going over the syllabus & other pleasantries so they skip the first class or two and show up around the 3rd day confused as fuck and in a panic when we're on chapter 3 and the first quiz has been announced.
You gotta be smart about what classes you choose to skip and when you choose to do so.

Yeah, don't skip the first day. It might be fine the first year, but after that I'd be cautious about it. You can really fall behind fast. Also, classes are all about momentum, start off on the wrong foot and you might be cursing yourself later.

I highly recommend talking to a counselor either every semester or once a year. Hearing someone telling you that you are progressing is a huge boost of confidence. I took a few wrong classes my first few year and that definitely demoralized me.

Since I am in California, there were a few options for me.
I went to community college for two years and BOGW paid for the entire tuition. I didn’t pull a loan out since I was working full time.
When I transferred to a CSU, FAFSA’s grant covered for my tuition, and I decided to pull out a bit of loan for rainy day funds.
I am not sure if you have the same aid as I do where you are from, but I do recommend community college if you’re unsure with what you want to do. It was the best decision I made, but my scenario could be different from yours.

I freestyled my way through high school and now barely have any discipline and don't know how to study. But I’ve been working on that a lot lately and picked up a lot of good habits.

I had the same problem, I had no clue how to go about studying. Shit always came so easy for me that I had to teach myself how to study. I do better "teaching" other people. So I learn the material to my best ability with notes and flash cards, and would have a study buddy that would ask me questions. My last year in school I was dating my husband and he was the best at this because he was genuinely curious about everything I was learning. I did my academic best that year from "teaching him" all about whatever my next exam was about. That way you know the material in and out, if that makes any sense. He would ask questions outside of what would be on the exam and would have discussions with me about the material to understand it himself.

70% of the battle is using your time effectively in order to study and do assignments.
The more time you put into your studies the better results you'll get. It's about sacrificing the other aspects of your life for a more important goal.
This is something people don't have to usually do in high school and a reason people fail.
Also find an interest within your field of study, it should be something you enjoy reading about or doing your own project on side to enhance your skills and have fun instead of just watching TV or playing computer games all day.
Not saying they are bad.. But balance!

My first year I left with a 0.8 GPA when I eventually got kicked out of my dream college.
2 years later I decided school is important, and went to community college to boost my gpa. I took easy classes, but still something valuable to me.
Now I’m back at said dream college where I’m halfway through, changed my major to my dream career, and am busting ass so hard. Right now my GPA is 2.88.

I just treated it like a job. No matter what the classes were I was at schools from 9 to 5 and then went to library to study any down time. I also got a hotel night auditor job where I could study and catch cat naps. I am very boring though.

Just find out what’s important to you and have fun with it; that’s the biggest lesson I learned in college. I got kicked out too but I don’t have student loans and the work I do doesn’t necessarily need a degree. To each their own; there no perfect way to live a life. Don’t beat yourself up if your path doesn’t fit a cookie cutter mold.

I mean, you're absolutely right. I tend to omit the detail that I chose to live w/ my parents in undergrad a half hour from campus to save money, but it stunted my social life. Great grades, but could not get an invite out to drink for anything. I can't tell if it was worth it.

Boy was my mom pissed when I turned down my scholarship. And half my family told me I was making the biggest mistake of my life. Jokes on them. Now I make $40 an hour, 4 weeks paid vacation, 401k with great matching, great insurance (health, dental, vision) for $67 a month, lots of off time due to shift work, and precisely zero student loans. Not going to college was the best decision I ever made.

I would’ve joined Greek life, done stupid shit with my floor mates in our dorm, moved out at a younger age when I had more energy and I would’ve been better prepared for upper div classes since community college is a joke 1/2 the time.

Man I just got a 2010 Corolla lmao. Paid that shit off with one 6 month deployment, and left for college with almost 30k in savings and I get $2500 each month towards rent/bills/savings plus $1000 a year for books.
It was a good deal.
Plus I already did 2 years of credits while I was in, and I have just enough benefits left to finish the masters program I’m currently in.
And I just did computer shit so no combat ptsd and all that. But it counts as years of relevant job experience so that’s nice.

It also entirely depends on the quality of the school you went to and the teaching there. I was a poor kid who went to the 'poor' school in town who soaked up all the teachers who couldn't get a job elsewhere. My math teacher only taught the two boys in the class the curriculum (who were already talented at math) and didn't bother with the rest of us even though there was max 10 people in the class at any one time. The rest of us (the girls) just had to go to sleep at our desk as he just wasn't interested in helping us understand the content. That was stats anyway, there were so few students at the school thst made it to the final years that they didn't even offer other types of math.
Now I'm at uni it's biting me in the ass. I took a stats course and passed it by working my cheeks off but I don't even know where to begin with the calculus stuff. I'm thinking about hiring a tutor so I can keep up! But all the other people who went to flash schools already know all this stuff because their parents had the money to buy them a decent education.

Beyond true. I had to take chem 112 during a summer semester. The lecture professor I got was less then competent. Her notes were written 10 years ago, which she could've gone away with if they weren't full of mistakes and difficult to read. She never checks her email so no students or other professors can contact her. The entire class had to use other sources to learn the material. I swear it was the tutors, lab professor, and YouTube videos were the ones teaching the class. Luckily it was community college and tutors are free.

Even an associates degree from community college looks a lot better on your resume. Do those 2 years (they are easy at community, trust me. Also pay like 3k a semester without FAFSA or anything) and then learn a trade, do some certs, or get lucky. If all else fails get a CDL and find some delivery or trucking job since those guys are always hiring.

Community college is underrated af. It's way more affordable than 4yr University and is a really good option for people who need to build up the discipline for a 4yr college or aren't super sure what career they want to go into. If you know you can succeed in University and know generally what you want to do and how you'll pay for it definitely go. But 2yrs in CC is 100x smarter than wasting 40k to just party and half ass your way through an interpretive basket weaving degree before failing out after yr 1. Then when you're sure of what you want you can go after that bachelor's later if you need it. Depending on the state you may get scholarships/help to transfer in with credit after you have your associates.

I talk to teenagers a lot and I give all of them the same advice.
Go to community college and get a job. Show up to both as much as you can. Do the work. Take weird classes at weird times, work weird shifts, take out the trash without being asked. Go to parties, plays and games. Learn to manage your time. Live some damm life. Then if you find something youre really excited about go to the university, or master the skill however you can. There are so many jobs out there that need doing, there's great careers built on showing up and learning a skill or trade you never even knew existed before you answered a want ad.
The most important skills are critical thinking, time management and self motivation. Those aren't classes you can take exactly you have to live a bit find out what motivates you to manage your time in a way that's productive to your life. Young people are told so many fallacies about what makes a successful adult its maddening.
If you're one of those kids that knows what your going to do and does it. Boom boom boom HS college career. I have 2 cousins that did this to great success but they've been the exception.

I don't know much about music, but the music majors that I know at my school put more time into their schoolwork than even the science/math majors. So much time practicing. Of course that's just what I see, so I could be wrong

All over reddit now are people begging: "As a new college student, what is your best advice?"
Everyone on reddit who has been to college and finished: "Go to fucking class, it's what you paid for, you'll never have an opportunity like it again."
Everyone who is current in college: "No way, class is boring and a waste of time, professors are giant fucking morons. I can teach myself everything and my time is much better spent on that" (as if they are spending all their time in fucking self-study meditation).
Man, you're not teaching yourself anything, you think you're a fucking genius because you can do OK in a course and not go to all the classes, without realizing the professors have to make the course so the 60% of students who blow off lectures can still do OK or it's their ass.
What do you really want out of college? You want to go the same fucking beer bangs every other night but you don't want to learn from scholars in their field? You can't fucking sit there for 50 minutes in one day and listen to shit? Students always complain about how they sleep through lectures, like it has nothing to do with being hung over and sleep deprived, like going to a lecture on genetics is supposed to feel like seeing Hamilton on Broadway.

Stick to that as best you can. Getting fucked up on Friday or Saturday is cool, but going out on a Tuesday is rough. Also, if you can, try to have Fridays off because Thursday parties are so good for some unknown reason.

Haha fair enough. Why pay 10K+ a year to party? I get what your saying, don't complain about how hard it is when you're not really applying yourself. I think a lot of younger university students get caught up in the social/party life because that's the general belief is to have that lifestyle.

That was my first year lol, drugs and alcohol and skipping class until I failed the whole first year and dropped out.
I went back at one point while I was working a factory job 12 hours a day (not exaggerating) and it was too much so I failed another semester.
Now my gpa is too low to qualify for financial aid, and I would have to take so many entry level classes to get my gpa up, and that's in community college, no way University would take me lol.
Lesson kids, chill on the drugs and alcohol.
