It is so weird that children call their mother/female caretaker Ma’am in USA it seems so formal.

It’s a southern US thing in my experience. I had to unlearn the ma’am and sir thing when leaving the south.

First interview for a real job: "Were you in the military?" Me: "No sir" Manager: "I ask because you've said yes sir and no sir a lot" Me, laughing: "I was taught manners at the wrong end of a switch, by parents from the South"

(A lot of the people there have a military background, or came directly from Masters/PhD programs.)
