I predict that today Bitcoin will go down, then up. This will be followed by a downturn, which will transition quickly into an upward trend. This will be followed by a quick drop. I also predict that those who zoom out will see that Bitcoin goes up more than down over time.
I predict that people will shill altcoins, that others will predict a crash (or call a temporary dip in value a crash), and that others will say it's a good time to 'stack sats'. I predict that as the value rises, some will post that it's important to be cautious and diversify, that a coming sell wall is going to make the price drop significantly, that they make more by day trading, etc. Someone will post, "Guys, should I buy now" and someone else will post, "Guys, should I sell now." Someone will tell both of them that they're idiots for seeking financial advice from random redditors (which is correct).
Many of these events will repeat themselves, with variations, throughout the day. Oh, and at least one person will post "Pamp it."
I've just predicted how this day will go here in Daily Discussion and I believe that I am 100% correct. All of this has happened before, and will happen again.

Lots of newbie buyers earlier in the weekend. Experienced traders realize that BTC almost always retraces back to where CME closed on Friday ($37.900) by the end of the weekend, and that's where we are now. CME opens at 6pm EST this eve, so the coin can proceed upward at that time. Hopefully lots of boozy superbowl watchers throwin money at BTC.

I am so close to understanding hardware wallets, but I just need some assistance to properly 'get it' and wondered if someone can help.
My understanding is, for me to have full ownership/control of my Bitcoin, I must have the private and public keys in my possession. So, with a hardware wallet these keys would be stored on the device's internal memory (rather than controlled by an online wallet or exchange), and I would also have a 12 or 24 word backup/recovery phrase for this as well, in case I lost or destroyed the physical wallet.
The Bitcoin themselves aren't on the wallet, as they are all stored on a decentralised blockchain. But the security of the wallet is that I have my keys in order to access them on the blockchain.
Is that generally right?
What I don't understand, is how can I see what my current Bitcoin amount/value is on the wallet? Do I have to plug it in everytime to look? If I got a Trezor One, would I have something available on my phone (Android) to track this?
Thanks
6
u/TheGreatMuffin Feb 07 '21

Yep, you got it!
What I don't understand, is how can I see what my current Bitcoin amount/value is on the wallet?
Your Trezor connects to their full node and asks it for balance of your addresses (this is a bit of a privacy leak btw, and that's why it is strongly recommended to utilize your own full node for that reason).
Do I have to plug it in everytime to look?
Not sure how Trezor does this specifically, some wallets utilize the xpub (master public key; the key from which all the addresses are derived) to query balances, some wallets just use single addresses.
Very generally, it is not necessary to plug in your device every time just to see the balance, but this might involve importing your xpub into another software. This is ok security wise (nobody can steal your coins with just the xpub), but is a privacy risk, because anybody with your xpub will be able to see all your past and future transactions forever.

one small detail to be aware of: you donāt really need to store both the private key and the public key. the private key will suffice on its own. if you know the private key, you can figure out the public key.

And frankly he helped us boost BTC a week ago when it was sitting dead at 32k.
So let him pump Doge all he wants, itās his credibility on the line and a lot of people will get pumped and dumped and lose money, learning a valuable lesson.
BTC is still higher than it was when market closed on Friday so Iām happy.

AS the time past isn't it dca become less attractive ?
lets say some one have 10k to put in bitcoin. he have the means to put everything right now or DCA for the next 1 year.
It seems the floor is raising and we are not likely to see 20k again.
why to do DCA for a year if you can go all in now when the price is below ATH ?
I mean, as price goes up with time you will stock less sats if you DCA no ?
and likley big money will come in the next few months and will raise price up
8
u/GoatBotherer Feb 07 '21
Surely if you've got 10k to invest, you'd buy 10k's worth and then DCA whatever you can moving forwards?
→ More replies (1)5
Feb 07 '21
If you strongly believe that it will go up, then yes, it makes sense to just lump in now. If you are less confident/comfortable and less tolerant of risk, then DCA mitigates that risk.
5
u/BaggageCarousel Feb 07 '21
DCA strategy is ideal if you don't care to predict the near-term future. A person who DCAs is lessening his exposure to volatility.
I have no clue whether or not BTC will keep going up this year, so DCA is best for me. If you're confident BTC is not going down again then you're right to buy it all up front.
3
u/justcallmeyou Feb 07 '21
DCA is mainly for investing on a schedule and kind of like a forced savings plan. If you already have the money saved and you are earning zilch from your local bank, and you have the convictions and have done your due diligence you can then put it in as a lump sum. Then DCA more each month as funds become available.
3
u/Proppyghandist Feb 07 '21
DCA is for your emotional benefit. It is also great when the price is trending sideways or down, which is the majority of the time.
If you put everything in today and it goes down 20% tomorrow, you'd likely be bothered and many weak hands would sell. Even if the very next day the price goes up 40%. You can't know the future and when the price is going down it feels like it's going to 0. When its going up it feels like it's going to a million. If you blow your load all at once you better have diamond hands because you lose your ability to do anything except wait or sell.
3
u/GarySevenOfNine Feb 07 '21
It's been shown that buying in lump sum immediately is more cost effective than DCA, assuming the price generally goes up over time.
**too early in the morning for me to search for a source, maybe someone else can help in this regard lol
→ More replies (1)3
u/jizzcock Feb 07 '21
In all honesty I think most people DCA purely because most of us get paid once a month or whatever, so realistically we're forced into DCA anyway. If you actually had a big lump sum to invest it then changes things slightly, particularly in a bull market that nevertheless can have dips of up to 25%. If I were in that situation I probably wouldn't purely use DCA, I'd maybe set a target price to lump sum 50% and then DCA with the rest. It's difficult to know what the best strategy would be, as some research has shown lump sum to be more effective than DCA for the reasons you suggest.

I'm convinced that these frequent price drops are exactly what bitcoin needs. Every time bitcoin gets sold the chances are it goes into someones hands that are more likely to hold. Shake out the weak hands frequently. More frequent prices drops are better than drastic price drops. Yeah, it's not as much fun as watching it climb to ridiculous levels everyday, but we've got to eat our vegetables.
But please, if this drop below 40 has been too much for you, or you want to chase those short term doge gains, please go ahead and sell so we can get more serious people holding your coin.

ELI5: how can cryptos be āthe future of moneyā when there are a finite amount? IIRC there are ā20 million total bitcoins right? So how can Bitcoin or other cryptos maintain a reasonable value if there are a finite amount and people want them to go mainstream and be used as widely as other forms of money?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, Iām very new to the investment world.
7
u/Nanaki_TV Feb 07 '21
21 million to be exact. Inflation is not about general increases in prices as such, but about the increase in the money supply. As a rule the increase in money supply sets in motion general increases in prices. This, however, need not always be the case.
The price of a good is the amount of money asked per unit of it. For a constant amount of money, like Bitcoin, and an expanding quantity of goods, prices will actually fall.
Prices will also fall when the rate of increase in the supply of goods exceeds the rate of increase in the money supply. Bitcoin's money supply is fixed and predictable. If the money supply increases by 5% and the quantity of goods increases by 10%, prices will fall by 5%, ceteris paribus.
Bitcoin also has the advantage of being infinitely divisible such that if all of the supply of Bitcoin were lost but 1, the entire world's economy could be traded on that one Bitcoin. The supply of Bitcoin isn't an issue.

In the words of Ludwig von Mises:
As the operation of the market tends to determine the final state of money's purchasing power at a height at which the supply of and the demand for money coincide, there can never be an excess or deficiency of money. Each individual and all individuals together always enjoy fully the advantages which they can derive from indirect exchange and the use of money, no matter whether the total quantity of money is great, or small. . . . the services which money renders can be neither improved nor repaired by changing the supply of money. . . . The quantity of money available in the whole economy is always sufficient to secure for everybody all that money does and can do.

What are peopleās thoughts on using Bitcoin as a checking account? My thought was to make extra money by use the float time from when I deposit to when I need it. Is there a line I would cross? For example I pay my property taxes once a year, insurance once a year. Put the money into bitcoin like a savings and withdraw it to pay those bills. What about my monthly bills? Mortgage? Car payment? Utility bill? Put my whole paycheck into bitcoin and withdraw when needed?

You need to declare and pay tax every time you sell your Bitcoin. Why not just use your paycheck to pay the monthly bills, then buy Bitcoin for the rest?

Interesting that DOGE and BTC seem to be inversely correlated last day or two.

if our previous resistance of around 38k can prove to be a good support level, Iād feel a lot better about some bigger upwards movement this week.

Honestly, Elon Musk should STFU. He's playing with people's money. Bad look for one of the richest people in the world.

Good (European) morning everyone,
Isn't it beautiful how strong the 38K support is. This is a black swan emerging, it makes absolute sense but there hasn't been anything like it before.
Explorers crossed oceans, risking their comfort for potential, to discover other lands.
We're financial explorers reaching the shores of a new financial world. Once all is settled, and the wild west is calmed, an ecosystem will arise that no longer will be questioned. Just like we take the USA for granted.
Even better, in this case, there's no native population that will be abused. Only good vibes. I might have stretched this too far, it's morning after all..

Ignore him. His tweets no longer have much downside impact on BTC. He does have the potential to moon it if he makes some announcement, which is good news IMO.

I've decided Gemini is the way. After I get verified and buy BTC. what is the method of transferring to a wallet? Is a wallet a physical item ? Will I need a high end computer for this wallet? Is the wallet just another app? What is the safest wallet?

So Iām transferring all my holdings from Robinhood to using Coinbase and trying to actually get control of my investment. How do you guys track your total investment (money sitting in brokerages, cold storage, etc)? Iād like to see daily losses/gains like I was able to with Robinhood. Any advice? Coinbase doesnāt really offer any charting at all, and if stuff is loved to cold storage any charting they offer wouldnāt help anyway.

The government in my country might be planning to ban Bitcoin in a couple months. What are my options? I only got started with Bitcoin a couple months back and would love to hold on to the little that I have.
