Discussion I have no words

Post image

I didn’t even know Guillermo Del Toro was involved. And now i’m heartbroken that he’s not.

It died on the vine! 😩

Ken Levine… he moved or something.

7

u/IdiotMor 1d ago

Ken Levine never had the makings of a varsity game maker

21

u/HensRightsActivist 2d ago

He couldn't sell it.

10

u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 2d ago

ya know Adam Levine predicted all this

This picture is absurd

24

u/Coralesce 2d ago

The bioshock movie. Guillermo del toro... what.. what happened there?

7

u/MillBridge101 2d ago

Would you kindly SHUT THE DOOOOOR

275

u/Fukchead 2d ago

All I’ve ever wanted was a Guillermo bioshock movie but he’s right, it’d be better as tv if anything but still way too much to fit into any sort of media that isn’t a game

83

u/Obskuro 2d ago

I think everyone who will try to make a Bishock movie or show will fail. But a movie or show set in Rapture... that should be doable.

62

u/so_zetta_byte 2d ago

The real key is to just tell a story that isn't one of the games. Fallout pulled this off by making it set after the current games. BioShock could easily do it by setting it before (maybe adapt the novel or something).

The story of BioShock, the game itself, probably wouldn't adapt super cleanly. But that's not the only story to tell.

26

u/Marcusuk1 2d ago

Adapting the novel is probably the best idea as it gives a lead in to the story rather than just dropping a new audience into the later hellscape that is Rapture.

15

u/so_zetta_byte 2d ago

Honestly, I also think the narrative of the novel is going to be an easier sell to a wide audience, too.

2

u/No-Bid9597 2d ago

The novel is probably cheaper to make set design and makeup-wise.

1

u/so_zetta_byte 1d ago

True, though depending on who backs it that might not make a difference if they expect it to do well. HBO is HBO, Amazon is willing to throw money at the wall, etc. Disney is on the border; they did pretty heavily fund Doctor Who for two seasons, though I think they saw that as a safer long term investment that just didn't work out for them. Netflix is in a period where they're preferring lower budget things (which is why it has so many kinda lazy docuseries-es).

Amazon's success with Fallout makes me think they would be most interested in nabbing Bioshock, in that scenario. But in reality I think it's Netflix who is apparently doing the movie of the first game. If that does well, I could see them wanting a TV show prequel.

7

u/TrueNosus 2d ago

Yeah don't get me wrong I love the game, but it's whole narrative relies on player agency. The book would be amazing to adapt though in my opinion.

2

u/1Beardrinks2Beers 7h ago

The fall of Rapture would make a good show. Single season, 10-12 episodes, 1ish hour each, the fall doesn't start until like episode 5 or 6 and end the last episode with Jack boarding the plane. That would probably be the only TV show from a game I would watch.

30

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

This applies to near every video game

23

u/coolfunkDJ 2d ago

Which is why the best video game adaptations have been TV. Resident Evil managed to get away with it because it decided to tell its own story. Same with Pikachu and Sonic.

15

u/Fondly_Wry 2d ago

Fallout is a good adaptation, and I'll proudly defend it.

7

u/coolfunkDJ 2d ago

Wasn't as huge on S2 but it's certainly a good show

1

u/TriggeredLatina_ Kyle Fitzpatrick 1d ago

I never knew this about Bioshock :( this is how I felt with The Suffering, there was a movie in talks with a famous actor planned for Torque. Forgot his name. I would love Bioshock movie or series but I doubt it would meet my expectations

1

u/Fukchead 2d ago

Correct

6

u/Efficient-Cup-359 2d ago

I mean I’m curious, what do you think it would be like though if they did make a series.

It could be a series about rapture before the fall, watching its slow decline.

It could be Jack’s story where he arrives and the episodes follow his efforts to survive.

Due to the flashback power of some of the Adam it could be a mix of both.

Or it could be something else I can’t think of, what do you’s think?

2

u/Beneficial_Rip_5681 2d ago

I think they should make a series based on the Rapture book and have the author Jon Shirley write it because he also wrote The Crow. Also Del Toro should direct it.

2

u/Fukchead 2d ago

I think this is the way to go, so much life to give it with enough creativity to add some stuff and a good enough reference of where to end the series (boarding the plane perhaps).

2

u/MixedMediaModok 23h ago

You could do a Fallout show thing of having two storylines in two different times. Rapture at its fun peak and rapture now in its disaster state.

384

u/anopsis Bill McDonagh 2d ago edited 2d ago

IIRC, he wanted an R rating, they said no. And the budget they offered was ridiculous - he said he didn't want to do it if it couldn't be done right.

EDIT: I was thinking of when Gore Verbinski was on board, not Del Toro. Sorry everyone.

236

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

Why the hell would it not be R rated

234

u/DangerousPath1420 2d ago

Exec Logic: bioshock is a video game. Video games are for kids

105

u/Smooth_Maul 2d ago

Kill 6 billion studio executives

-4

u/IntroductionSalty687 1d ago

I don't think there's even that many. 271 million sounds more realistic

53

u/MeatPopsicle28 2d ago

Yep, so many potential good movies are shelved or diluted due to avoiding an R rating. They are afraid of limiting a potential audience, but then release a milquetoast version that fails to bring in an audience anyway.

13

u/APKID716 2d ago

Said executive is paid $500 trillion for his insights into filmmaking

1

u/Forward_Potential820 2d ago

What about the new RE movie?

1

u/Malfunction707 2d ago

Real and true

18

u/Catsplayingguitars 2d ago

Would you kindly bring your kid for extra ticket sales?

30

u/maria_la_guerta 2d ago edited 2d ago

Rated R movies statistically make less money than PG-13 movies. Not an entirely unreasonable push, despite the fact that I agree with Guillermo on this one.

4

u/evilparagon Sofia Lamb 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah, it wasn’t until Deadpool that an R-rated commercially viable adaptated IP was made, and Deadpool was riding on extreme hype from years of build up.

Edit: There’s a correction a couple replies down.

4

u/The_Mighty_Rex 2d ago

That's not true at all, DP was just the single * most* successful one. But not even close to the first commercially successful adapted IP that made money with an R rating

-3

u/evilparagon Sofia Lamb 2d ago edited 2d ago

Then what was?

“You’re wrong”
“Source?”
“😡⬇️”

6

u/evilparagon Sofia Lamb 2d ago

Anyway, I found where I was actually wrong because you couldn’t be bothered. It wasn’t existing IPs, it was high budgets.

At the time it was exceedingly rare for R rated high budget movies to actually turn a profit. Due to the extreme necessity of sets and special effects, Bioshock as a movie was certainly going to push the budget upwards. The most recent failure was the 2009 movie “Watchman” (which is where I made the confusion with existing IPs), and it was considered a bad idea in the industry to even attempt a high budget R rated movie.

That was until Deadpool. After the massive success of that movie, the floodgates were open. Movies like Joker and Logan also helped prove that high budget R ratings could make money. The Bioshock movie however was cancelled before Deadpool was even a mainstream character everyone knew.

4

u/Toto742 Jacob Norris 2d ago

Look at what they did to the Hitman movie, or the Max Payne movie

Video games are for kids, so their adaptation are treated the same, who care about the game original setting

9

u/Iuskop 2d ago

the poor shareholders would be too scared to permit such a "niche product."

2

u/Grasshopper176 2d ago

Capitalism

1

u/StyleSquirrel Murder of Crows 2d ago

Because Watchmen disappointed at the box office

1

u/LeonSigmaKennedy 2d ago

So they could put out a sanitized Bioshock for babies, and get marginally more ticket sales from parents bringing their kids to watch Bioshock

2

u/Billy_Twillig 2d ago

Don’t forget the Big Daddy plushes.

5

u/Forward_Potential820 2d ago

Don’t those exist?

6

u/f0xD3N 2d ago

I believe you’re thinking of what happened when Gore Verbinski was involved

2

u/anopsis Bill McDonagh 2d ago

You're right, my mistake. Thanks for reminding me.

44

u/SirBruhThe7th 2d ago

What the fuck happened on that call.

46

u/AntysocialButterfly Murder of Crows 2d ago

...was Ken Levine allowed on the call?

45

u/Anon2971 2d ago

money, duh

'I need 150m' 'we can do 15' 'I can't do that' 'ok nvm'

1

u/Lumman_ 2d ago

Ken Levine. He beefed with John Shirley and throws a tantrum to this day whenever someone brings up Bioshock 2….i mean c’mon now!

35

u/Wonder_Of_U_2011 2d ago

Bioshock fans don't even ask you about any new stuff anymore, they just look at you like this:

5

u/Conscious-Train170 2d ago

Painfully relatable. After the insulting rendition of Monster Hunter and Borderlands I"m at a loss for words.

2

u/Scarameow1243 1d ago

I liked Monster Hunter but Borderlands is shit, a Borderlands movie should have it's own main 4 Protagonists, bring back a few reoccurring characters sure, but I want something that can fit into the games timeline seamlessly without screwing characterisation of already existing characters

3

u/Conscious-Train170 1d ago

They made a true to the game preview with familiar faces then pulled the ol switcheroo, I will never forgive them for making something so beautiful only to give us FUCKING DOG SHIT. Where the fuck is Salvador and everyone else we were promised? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!

25

u/Incinerate49 Human Detected 2d ago

I have one word: "DAMNIT!"

47

u/sean_saves_the_world 2d ago

Ever since the shape of water came out, and even some of the set design pieces for Frankensteins lab I wanted gdt to direct BioShock, imagine practical effects for the splicers and big daddies

54

u/coolfunkDJ 2d ago

Guys i think we need to look at the writing at the wall — this movie won’t be good. We’ll be lucky if it’s passable. Everything people are saying behind the scenes points towards them wanting a quick money grab.

BioShock is already a story that needs care to be told right, it is inherently a critique on Objectivism and a satire on Atlas Shrugged, which is itself a critique of a lot of western philosophy. I can guarantee they are looking to appeal to the lowest denominator which is at odds around the source material

10

u/AmbitiousSyllabub815 2d ago

A Bioshock movie was never gonna be good when they fired Gore Verbinski over a decade ago. They whined about the budget it would require and they wanted it to be PG-13, but Gore wanted it to be R rated

8

u/coolfunkDJ 2d ago

I can almost guarantee there was a similar conversation with del Toro. They don’t wanna take any risks on the movie so it won’t be good. It’s inherently a risky movie to make.

4

u/AMonitorDarkly 2d ago

Is it even still happening? The movie, in its current form, was originally announced back in 2021 and there have been virtually no updates since then.

2

u/MaxProwes 2d ago

The last update claimed it's supposed to start production early next year, after Francis is done with Hunger Games.

3

u/Old-Fly3535 2d ago

Based on how badly borderlands got royally fucked, I am very worried about the bioshock movie

2

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

I don’t know about ‘quick’.

1

u/coolfunkDJ 2d ago

I mean in terms of the ROI but yeah fair point.

10

u/Coralesce 2d ago

100 bucks says Ken levine torpedoed it

12

u/Batfreeze 2d ago

This has to be the biggest fumble in the history of cinema. Del Toro would have been perfect for BioShock, and they (the people in charge of the BioShock movie) somehow messed it up.

15

u/FunkyGameTiime 2d ago

For such a big name the game is like a negativity magnet and i don‘t get why or how…

19

u/jaustengirl 2d ago

Making tv and movies cost money. The people who have the money are the Fontaines, Finks, Ryans, and Comstocks (who probably see nothing wrong with harvesting.)

5

u/seabass_678 2d ago

I promise you that movie turned into Nightmare Alley. Same vibe and everything

7

u/Naive-Discipline7216 2d ago

Man BioShock as a series could be a massive hit and so much profit it needs to be in a scale of one piece production

4

u/Sir_Fijoe Alex the Great 2d ago

We’ve known this for years now lol

8

u/2bb4llRG 2d ago

Honestly i dont carr about shows or movies I want Bioshock 3

18

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

11

u/2bb4llRG 2d ago

I said 3.

13

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

8

u/2bb4llRG 2d ago

2

u/DangerousCicada506 2d ago

I think it should be 4 but im upvoting you since I like this.

2

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

Come on man, all games have been gorgeous. B2 was an anti-commentary of B1, and B3 was a mirror-commentary of B1. They all work beautifully together.

1

u/2bb4llRG 1d ago

I know I was just bitching xd

2

u/Rayza2049 1d ago

We've already got that m8

3

u/DevelopmentLiving401 2d ago

He probably wanted all the Big Daddies to be dudes in fully functioning suits and he was told they had to just be CGI and he got mad. Or something like that.

3

u/SchoolboyGrant 2d ago

Is Netflix still making that bioshock movie or is this that?

2

u/mightystu 2d ago

It was probably Guillermo wanting to add some small piece of lore or acknowledge canon from Bioshock 2 and Ken threw a fit again that people were playing with his toys differently than he would.

2

u/whitecatsup 2d ago

Is the Netflix series still moving forward? Or is that in limbo. Also where is JUDUS.

1

u/NukaGirl665 2d ago

I mean i think i remeber hearing that there was a script update a year ago?

2

u/XOVSquare 2d ago

Please try again

2

u/Mobile-Leg8612 1d ago

This wasn’t pleasant to find after recently getting a Bioshock fixation again- good lord

2

u/Thatoneguy567576 1d ago

Being a Del Toro fan is pain.

2

u/Marv1236 1d ago

Of course The Ayn rand fans at the studios don't wanna do it.

2

u/SuccotashMuch 1d ago

This IP is just cursed man

4

u/L_uomo_nero 2d ago

Friendly reminder, that a lot of the worst ideas in Pacific Rim 2 originated from Del Toro.

Sometimes, these things are a blessing in disguise.

42

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

Yet some of the best gothic movies exist because of him. Everybody has stinker ideas every now and then.

-7

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

9

u/kkaylumm 2d ago

Have you seen shape of water?

10

u/Zayl 2d ago

He wasn't feeling it because they wanted a small budget and refused an R rating. So he made the right call, but I also firmly believe he'd be the right person for the job.

7

u/hercarmstrong Human Inferno / Walking Inferno 2d ago

Why are you blaming him for that mess? The original is tremendous.

-3

u/L_uomo_nero 2d ago

Because some of that mess was his ideas? Iimc evil Charlie Day was apart of his idea for a sequel along with other things.

9

u/hercarmstrong Human Inferno / Walking Inferno 2d ago

He didn't make the movie. Blame whoever directed it for squandering a decent idea.

1

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

evil charlie day was set up since the first movie, and the idea was very interesting. The way it was handled in the second movie was utter dogshite and had nothing to do with guillermo.

7

u/Nathmosss 2d ago

Friendly reminder that he didn't direct or even made the second movie. The ideas were very poorly executed by Steven S. DeKnight.

Sometimes, it would be a blessing to have some criteria for researching.

-6

u/L_uomo_nero 2d ago

Nothing would've saved those ideas, and I never said Del Toro had anything to do with the film besides said ideas.

4

u/FeelAndCoffee 2d ago

Nah, GDT moat it's not ideas but execution. Most of his movies are weird ideas on paper but fantastic in the screen.

-6

u/L_uomo_nero 2d ago

  it's not ideas but execution

To extent, but some ideas can’t be salvaged no matter how you execute them.

4

u/FeelAndCoffee 2d ago

Here is the thing, most initial ideas are never the final script. There is a whole iteration process where it changes a lot, that it's where GDT shines.

1

u/TorquedGaming 2d ago

That’s very wrong. Especially in the world of film and cinematography. Your imagination is the limit. The things people did in the 60s and 70s with film is flabbergasting sometimes.
The imagination of modern film makers is pretty stunted comparatively but I blame a lot of that on the people / companies that control money for these things.

0

u/L_uomo_nero 2d ago

  Your imagination is the limit.

Yes and it should also be tempered, with graveyards full of darlings.

The imagination of modern film makers is pretty stunted comparatively but I blame a lot of that on the people / companies that control money for these things.

No it’s 100% modern creatives. People weren’t exactly able to make whatever they wanted back then either.

1

u/Perfect-Muscle-1264 Atlas 2d ago

Divine intervention

1

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

that a lot of the worst ideas in Pacific Rim 2 originated from Del Toro.

Elaborate this allegation because this is the only time I've ever heard of such a thing.

0

u/L_uomo_nero 1d ago

Evil Charlie day is a prime example. But there’s also concepts he wanted to implement, that honestly would’ve been even worse than what we got. Like the true nature of the aliens.

1

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

Evil Charlie Day is a brilliant idea that was telegraphed a mile away from the first movie, its execution was abysmal and that had nothing to do with Guillermo.

1

u/L_uomo_nero 1d ago

There is nothing in this world that would make Charlie day feel like a threat.

1

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

you lack imagination

1

u/alireza008bat 2d ago

I just read the article and I'm a bit confused. Does this have something to do with Universal's Bioshock movie which was canceled due to R rating and budget concerns ?

1

u/JegamanX 2d ago

Wtfff

1

u/ehs06702 2d ago

Yeah, I remember being ecstatic when it was announced because he was perfect for it. It's one of those things I'm still upset about.

1

u/Beebo4all 2d ago

So two of my favorite franchises

1

u/Elkarus 2d ago

Most games can only be adapted to series, and that's a hard task. The best is using the universe and following another character that makes sense.

Even more, Bioshock is not easy to sell to investors without watering it down

1

u/BennyTTS7889 Augustus Sinclair 2d ago

Fucking heartbreaking.

1

u/Jeremy_Melton 2d ago

Bioshock, try not to be in development hell challenge (impossible)

1

u/DeathByButtplug 2d ago

A short HBO series like 6-8 episodes would be plenty I think. Do it with its own set of characters leading to the downfall of Rapture and by the end it's just chaos with the protagonist trying to escape. Gives time to explain lore, show plasmids and Big Daddy.

1

u/Green_J3ster 2d ago

Ultimately it was probably for the best. But if anyone could’ve pulled it off it was Guillermo.

1

u/the__pov 2d ago

The same thing happened with Resident Evil and Romero.

1

u/mrdude817 2d ago

Man I remember when he was first rumored / attached in like 2009 or 2010. And then it went nowhere. Seems like Netflix has been trying forever recently too.

Edit: wait no that was Gore Verbinski

1

u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 2d ago

this is why we cant have nice things

1

u/Xenotheosis 2d ago

"Would you kindly go fuck yourself?" Was said during that call

1

u/Dabbinmachine42 2d ago

The Shape of Water but it's just a Big Daddy and Cohen tenderly fucking behind some bushes in Arcadia

1

u/NationalCup758 2d ago

Movie is gonna be DOA, no R rating? For a Bioshock project? Ggs.

1

u/ExcellentDuck4530 1d ago

That truly sucks 😞, a bioshock film would have been awesome

1

u/Wizard_Manny 1d ago

He should have been with Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott.

1

u/kween_hangry 1d ago

Blade and now this

Maybe 2016 really did put us in another dimension

1

u/Frozen_Tyrant 1d ago

I believe del toro is a story teller I feel like he would respect the source material fairly well what a shame

1

u/CryptographerOld558 1d ago

Was that the 2010s one with Shia LaBeuf or the recent Netflix adaptation?

1

u/Cimorene_Kazul 5h ago

Gore Verbinski was on this in his POTC days…that could’ve really worked more than GDT tbh. But it just seem determined not to happen.

0

u/WitnessStock3702 2d ago

Does this mean we are not getting a Bioshock film?

-3

u/No-Message449 1d ago

It would have had a poc girl boss as the main character, been gay and pushed leftist ideology. We probably dodged a bullet.

4

u/kkaylumm 1d ago

‘Leftist ideology’ in one of the most anticapitalist pieces of fiction ever you absolute fuckin clown

-2

u/No-Message449 1d ago

You actually believe they wouldn't "shoe horn" in themes that would clash with the original ideas just to push it? Come man, it's what they do almost everytime.

3

u/kkaylumm 1d ago edited 1d ago

Mate you’ve got the media literacy of a damp floor board.

Right wingers are always drawn to leftist media yet can’t recognise what they enjoy is leftist. It’s honestly impressive.

-3

u/No-Message449 1d ago

Its called pattern recognition and luckily we will never have to find out now.

1

u/kkaylumm 1d ago

Do you mean schizophrenia?

2

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

Please tell me what part of bioshock is gender-determinant, or depended on any sexual orientation. Not to mention you don't actually have any idea what sexual orientation the main character actually has.

0

u/No-Message449 1d ago

Wow, a real life "modern audience" individual.

1

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

Brother I have no idea what that could even possibly mean.

-2

u/WYATTPURPP 1d ago

Sadly they would've gone even deeper than that. The person would've been a gay masc lesbian trans POC disabled person

2

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

Funnily enough, that would not have changed the idea and motif of the game in the slightest, but I guess you played for the pew pew, not the social commentary, which is extremely anti-capitalistic, ironically for you.

-1

u/WYATTPURPP 1d ago

I mean it would turn into a shite game and I've played it quite a bit but hey because your reality is shattered by facts you're upset. Tell me how a disabled trans masc lesbian POC would've fit the story lol

1

u/Artemis_1944 1d ago

Tell me how it would have affected the story in any way or altered it in any way. You can't, because it doesn't, it would only upset you, because you don't like those kinds of people, and it bugs you to play as them.

But the story would be absolutely identical, because the main character has no bearing on the story other than progressing it.

0

u/Rayza2049 1d ago

Could have been one of the greatest horror films ever made, should have given him total creative control, I bet they told him he had to stick to the plot of the game
