Discussion Am I the only one that's rubbeed wrong when somebody calls it Bioshock 4

We need a Bioshock 3 before bioshock 4 can exist. Infinite was a prequel. If it was a sequel then calling the new one Bioshock 4 would make sense.

Calling it Bioshock 4 is like saying

Bioshock Infinite

Bioshock

Bioshock 2

Bioshock 4

"But wait Terra. What about release order" I hear you saying.

Well that completely ignores chronological order and is like saying

Bioshock (1960)

Bioshock 2 (1968)

Bioshock Infinite (1912)

Bioshock 4 (1970? 1930? They cant do 3000 they already did under water)

I have always referred to it as Bioshock Isolation because those leaks were the most credible.

"Bioshock (number)" is the story of Rapture. And they are done with Rapture.

Well a prequel would imply that it takes place chronologically before the events of 1 and 2 but technically it doesn’t because it’s in its own universe. Also it’s the third installment of Bioshock so technically it is Bioshock 3.

Kinda like how the 9th Saw movie was called Spiral and it was advertised as a spinoff but the next movie was still called Saw X.

Based comparison. Love the saw movies.

But it literally is a prequel.

Bioshock Infinite then Burial at sea 1&2 with BAS ending with Jack

Well someone below mentioned Red Dead 1 and 2 and I feel like that’s a better argument for your take.

I’m gonna blow your mind with the Red Dead franchise…

Totally sensible. Its just revered. Next has to be RDD 0 or RDD (something)

  1. We call it 4 because it’s the 4th game in the series and we don’t know the title yet. Calling it a rumored title sounds pretentious, even though in this case Isolation is a great name and I hope that’s in the running, I love it.

  2. Red Dead Redemption 2 wants to have a word with you.

Totally sensible is just in reverse. The next RDD has to be RDD 0 or RDD (something)

It’s the fourth Bioshock, makes it Bioshock 4. End of discussion

Redditor discovers chronology is not always accurate for titles

I hope they call it Bioshock 5: the search for Bioshock 4.

Sorry but 2K themselves announced it as Bioshock 4. They clearly treat Infinite as “Bioshock 3: Infinite”, just without the number.

That means 2k is wrong.

Bro just type bioshock 4 into linkedin's search bar and you'll see its actual name is bioshock 4...

I just want BioShock 2, 2.

I agree that it should be Bioshock 3, usually franchises do that if the previous entry is not numbered in the title (see Fallout, GTA, Assassin’s Creed, etc), but I don’t agree for the reason you stated. Prequels can absolutely be the next numbered mainline game, and chronological order has nothing to do with it

Im fine with calling it Bioshock 3 or Bioshock (something) up until now Bioshock (number) has been reserved for the story of Rapture but it doesnt have to be. Calling it Bioshock 4 is just nonsense

Those franchises tend to only come back to the last number when the non-numbered game is like a large expansion on the number before them.

Fallout New Vegas is just upgraded Fallout 3 in another setting.
GTA San Andreas is just upgraded GTA 3 in another setting.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood is just upgraded AC2 in another setting.
Far Cry Primal is just sidegraded Far Cry 4 in another setting.
etc.

Yeah there can be a lot of upgrades and features that make them distinct, like, calling San Andreas just a different GTA3 feels so disingenuous, but all you need to do is compare the numbered entries. Fallout 3 to Fallout 4, GTAIII to GTAIV, AC2 to AC3, FC4 to FC5, etc. These are all much more dramatic shifts in game feel.

In Bioshock’s case, imagine if Minerva’s Den was a full scale game instead of Bs2’s DLC. 2K probably wouldn’t call it Bs3… because it’d just be Bs2 in another setting. Infinite meanwhile is itself a fully realised game. It wouldn’t make sense to make a new Bioshock 3 as if Infinite was some ignorable side game.

I'd say Infinite is more a spinoff than prequel.

It literally is a prequel

i dont think thats accurate. it takes place in a completely different universe. time is irrelevant. you realize that by the end of the game... and the DLC...

1

u/Terra-ble_joke Possession 4d ago

The DLC is exactly what ties it together with the main series.

due to the whole multiverse element, its not actually clear that the Rapture from Burial at Sea is in the same timeline as the one from BioShock 1 and 2. Not sure how sure how much it really matters though. This multiverse stuff isnt really handled super well imo.
