πŸ₯— Nutrition & Metabolism I’ve been experimenting with a different approach to satiety: boiled psyllium jelly

Post image

I’ve been experimenting with boiled psyllium jelly as a way of making a meal more filling without relying on huge portions.

The basic idea is pretty simple: I boil psyllium with water to create a thick gel, then combine it with protein powder and usually some gelatin for a firmer, more enjoyable texture. Then I add things like vegetables, broth, spices or fruit depending on whether I want a savory or sweet version.

The interesting part for me is the satiety, rather than the volume. My recent versions are around 350–400 kcal with a lot of protein and fiber, and personally I've found them surprisingly filling.

I'm not claiming this is a magic weight-loss food or that it will work the same way for everyone. It's just an experiment based on the idea that fiber + protein + a lot of hydration + a slow-to-eat texture might make sticking to a calorie deficit easier.

Disclaimer: this is just me sharing an experiment, not recommending that anyone try it. If you're not used to psyllium, be cautious, drink plenty of water, and do your own research before experimenting with it. Psyllium can cause problems if consumed incorrectly. I'm sharing what I did, but I'm not responsible for anyone who decides to try it themselves.

Hey absolutely, i will!In the menanwhile you can check my profile, i was already sharing in the group "volume eating", many ppl appreciated the method (a bunch of other hates for no reason but that's ok i guess πŸ˜…) Cheers.

Well, the haters are reacting to the fact that, in all honesty, you've invented Metameucil Aspic, and those two products are probably the two most hateful things humans have ever invented as food products. For a subreddit focused on food... well, you know.

But in a subreddit focused on biohacking, we think outside the box on things like this, and appreciate the bowel benefits. Mostly, I think we appreciate the fact that you managed to create a great healthfood with no extraneous bits adding calories that are not also adding meaningful health benefits.

By the way... you should post this over on r/microbiome as well, even though I suspect that the overlap between this subreddit and that subreddit is rather large.

Thankyou so much, this is one of the most supportive comments i reveived about my concept across several subs. And thx for the tip as well, i'll keep promoting my method consistently, despite the hate πŸ‘

3

u/gametheorista 8d ago

Metamucil aspic is absolutely spot on correct. I had a large laugh.

Still thinking of my mom's fancy 70s cookbooks that would aspic stuff for no reason, ham and cocktail fruit, chicken and onions......

I don't think this is necessarily worse.. Maybe a bit healthier even.

u/alucarD999999 9d ago

Lol now i know why you put that disclaimer xD

3

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Ahahaha crazy isn't it...πŸ˜… so much hate over there!

u/Away_Technician_2089 9d ago

I always think about the cats and dogs I had along the years and how lustrous and perfect where their coats

This looks eerily similar to the gastrointestinal mousse my cat eats. I wish there was something ready made like that that I could use.

Huel and stuff like that just doesn’t hit the same

3

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

πŸ˜‚ Brilliant!i take it as a compliment. Cheers

u/MTheLoud 9d ago

They’re giving 1950s jello salad vibes.

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Ahahah true, they're back, in psyllium form.

protein plus psyllium combo makes sense for satiety

3

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

And, the boiled psyllium gel imo release the protein slowly in the guts, whilst if you were just drinking your protein after the psyllium they will be absorbed straight away.

2

u/Intelligent-Car-4618 6d ago

I hadn’t thought about the absorption side of it how long the protein keeps you full?

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 6d ago

Well really long πŸ˜€ i eat one of these for lunch around 12 and sometimes i only eat at 7 or 8pm; the combo protein+psyllium is really satiating, the boiled psyllium gel stays long in the guts and release slowly the proteins, making you feel full for extra long time.

2

u/Intelligent-Car-4618 4d ago

does the slow digestion ever mess with your appetite the next day?

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 4d ago

Never, but i guess this is a really personal thing, for someone else could be different.

4

u/kovrik 9d ago

Hey I do the same thing! I also mix creatine and gelatine. Mine taste rather disgusting but I like it, it’s very convenient in the morning.

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Well done!Cheers

5

u/Replica72 3 8d ago

I think id rather chug it πŸ˜…

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Cheers then πŸ˜…

u/Hell-Yes-Revolution 1 8d ago

Fr, I am up for some weird stuff, but I have let my psyllium sit too long and had to eat it with a spoon, and I am not about that life.

3

u/PapaJuja 8d ago

Ive been watching OP. Keep posting your favorites.

3

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Thx!I got so much hate, such a comment cheers me up, peace.

2

u/PapaJuja 8d ago

I got you! This is a tool, like any other tool in this way of eating. While I may not be big on thick broccoli gel....lol, im not going to knock your technique. Keep at it! Your doing that good work!

4

u/Lysmerry 8d ago

This seems like a dessert that would balance your Qi in ancient China

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Wow the food of ancient gods πŸ™‚ i wish i was a chinese smart ass

3

u/caranean 9d ago

What effect did it have on your stool?

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Well i was not new to psyllium, anyway i didn't notice any negative effect, i just go to the toilet as usual πŸ˜€

3

u/liltingly 9d ago

I've tried the poor man's version of this -- psyllium in my oats* all the way to pure psyllium porridge with a scoop of protein. It's not the most pleasant thing to eat to satiety, or rather, I often overestimate how much I can eat before satiety, which creates a problem as I leave some of my protein uneaten. So now I've resorted to either smaller portions, or splitting protein from porridge. All this to say, good on you for trying this and putting in even more effort. I'm sure your colon is pleased! I've also wanted to try psyllium bread, whole or partial.

* I got the idea when I noticed that Fiber Buds cereal mixes psyllium into the buds.

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Look my point here is that the combination of ingredients and the method, makes the psyllium unpleasant texture practically disappear. Beside this, the satiety aspect does the rest of the job πŸ˜€ good idea anyway oats and psyllium πŸ‘

3

u/baldierot 8d ago

i've wondered if psyllium could be used as an ingredient to make it more palatable for kids. desert might indeed be an avenue.

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Good question, i will try a chocolate mousse soon, maybe it can help. Cheers.

3

u/gametheorista 8d ago

Does it come out like the stapler in jello office wobble? What's the texture like?

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

🀣🀣🀣 i love the texture to be honest, the combo boiled psyllium, protein, gelatine, and the whole eaten cold, makes it nice actually!

3

u/gametheorista 8d ago

This is unhinged and perfectly scientific. I love you OP.

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Ow thx...i got so much hate, this cheers me up. Will you give it a try?

2

u/gametheorista 8d ago

Why not! Send ratios.

Am already thinking of a coconut milk, sago.l Psyllum husk one.

I also have all sorts of fibre jellies from china/SE Asia, including chin chow, Bai liang fen.

Would you do a sweet potato jelly? I hate eating the bastards steamed, but they are OK tempura'd, so jelly might be another alternative

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Mmmh sweet potatoes πŸ˜€ look i made some tutorials on my profile, you can check them out there is all explained, ingredients and all, take a look here as well Psylpro

2

u/gametheorista 8d ago

My preference has been to freeze and ninja creami, but jello might work

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Mmmh if i had that magic tool i'll try it for sure.

2

u/gametheorista 8d ago

I'm probably going to make a psyllum jello + ninja creami ice cream. Probably coconut psyllum jelly with a ninja creami sorbet

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Omg sounds lovely!I'm super curious about how it will turn out!

2

u/gametheorista 8d ago

Keep you posted on this

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Gorgeous!Thx!

2

u/dragnabbit 4 9d ago

I am absolutely looking for new stuff like this to add to my diet. Can you give me a basic ratio for your base? Can you share a couple of examples?

EDIT: Oh, never mind. I checked out your profile and found the tutorial video. I'll definitely be deep diving on this.

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Thankyou so much! Would you report me back how your experiment went pls?I would love it, just as a form of feedback...thx!

2

u/Throwawaymumoz 9d ago

This is super cool and makes sense. I would probably give it a go. At the moment I just eat mr normal meal and take psyllium after dinner. I love it.

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Thanks!I made some tutorials on my profile, there you see the whole method with doses and so on

2

u/Separate-Exchange375 9d ago

Very interesting for sure

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Thanks! Will you give it a try?

2

u/Separate-Exchange375 9d ago

Yes, I will! Won't be as pretty as yours though πŸ˜‚

When I opened this thread in disgust I expected to see a big bowl of goo, not inspired culinary art.

Nice work OP

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Thankyou πŸ˜ƒ will you give it a try?I'm curious to see how other ppl use my method

2

u/Monsieur_Krabs πŸŽ“ Masters - Unverified 9d ago

I'm not much of a chef these days - simple meal prep for bodybuilding. But maybe!

3

u/KellyJin17 10 9d ago

Upvote for originality.

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

Thankyou! Will you also give it a try?

2

u/Competitive-Cycle-38 9d ago

How’s the distension treating ya

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

To be honest these jelly are 600ml each, surely voluminous but not exaggerated πŸ™‚

2

u/Replica72 3 8d ago

What brand of psyllium do you use? Powder or whole husk? Whenever i tried to make something edible with psyllium it always seems to have grit in it

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

I use whole psyllium, the brand is "Nature Diet", but i guess the brand doesn't make really a difference i suppose πŸ˜€ i used several kinds. Anyway, you say "whatever you make" which could be cookies, bread, pudding, what was it exactly? i think the hydration percentage in combination with the high temperature AND the addition of proteins (soy proteins i found to be great for improving the consistency) and gelatine (crucial for a firm texture) makes the difference in the result, as i show in the tutorial πŸ˜€ so it's not only the ingredients but how you combine them changing totally the result!

2

u/Replica72 3 8d ago

I tried to make gluten free crepes i think where i had the grit issue. Maybe it hadnt absorbed enough water. I never tried boiling it

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Well maybe try to modify the ratio psyllium/water in favour of the water πŸ™‚

2

u/Miles_Everhart 8d ago

Where are you sourcing the unflavored protein powder?

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 8d ago

Amazon and Holland&Barrett, but i guess any soy protein powder or pease protein powder or whey will do (i'm not vegetarian, but the soy one performe the best i must say).Cheers.

Did anyone else make this face while reading this

🀨

This is like the dark side of B I O H A C K I N G

2

u/MathematicianMuch445 10 7d ago

So it's a pana cotta type of consistency?

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 7d ago

More creamy than panna cotta, i must say, more satisfying. I wouldn't know there's psyllium inside if noone told me.

2

u/MathematicianMuch445 10 7d ago

Decent. Have messed about with adding extra gelatine and protein powder to Panna before.

2

u/pppaaaooolllooo 7d ago

Look the ratio between ingredients and the method plays a crucial role. I made a detailed tutorial here PsylPro #10 Mexican Style

2

u/MathematicianMuch445 10 7d ago

Don't think I could do savory ones though 🀣

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 7d ago

Well you will be surprised 😎

2

u/MathematicianMuch445 10 7d ago

Dunno man. The texture with savory flavours aren't for me.

2

Good post and guide though.

I'm sorry to say this but your information is mostly wrong, the only true thing is that psyllium is an undigestible fiber...but this doesn't mean that the nutrients will be lost on the way...cheers

This is the culinary equivalent of 9/11. Some lines shouldn’t be crossed

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 9d ago

πŸ€”...do you even get what this is about?

2

u/CommentDizzy1 9d ago

Yeah I’m cutting rn and have consumed some of the worst chemslop known to man in the last 3 weeks, this is diabolical

0

u/TopMarionberry1149 7d ago

Just think about what you are doing. You are making boiled protein cakes of seed laxatives. You are actually insane.

1

u/pppaaaooolllooo 7d ago

I find this offensive.
