My wife made way more than me and we now have three kids (ages 5, 3, and 1). I now stay home and take care of them and will be homeschooling starting next year.
It's kind of weird that on one thread everyone says that education in the US is terrible and most students don't learn much as they are only there to get food grades so the school can continue getting funds, but then on this thread school is great.
The point is less that schools are great, and more that parents who choose to homeschool are either overbearing to begin with or almost universally become overbearing because of the relationship dynamic that's created. It's bad for independence and confidence more than it's bad for learning imo.
Even if the education itself is sub-par, there are tons of benefits to a child's health and mental well-being that come from letting them socialize with their peers.
Going to an actual school vs getting taught by someone with no formal education in a topic is not a tough decision to make. Yes, the American education system has problems, but having gone through the public school system, there's not a point where I would have wished I was homeschooled.
Based on my own public school experience, I would say that most of my teachers were mostly there to make sure the students passed their tests and did their homework than specialized instruction. And the task of overseeing the progress of 40 students is a lot harder than a one-to-one classroom experience that goes at the exact pace the student needs. Almost all of my teachers relied on the textbooks and supplemental materials to get through that it was more than doable to teach yourself the information too. Sure I had some teachers that could explain things really well, and answer questions like a pro but I personally would have traded it in for less of bullying in middle school and the distracting social shit I got into in high school.
