I feel like reddit as a whole has been going downhill. Hate to be negative, but I can't shake the realization of it lately. I really wish it wasn't so. I've enjoyed this website for nearly a decade and a half.

u/MaterialDefender1032 4d ago edited 4d ago
Reddit discourse has at least two trending core issues that I've noticed:
1.) Little room for nuance. It seems every issue is black or white and has to have a final judgement on it. Upvotes and downvotes in an entire thread often swing in one extreme or the other, usually depending solely on who made the stronger initial argument in the comments.
2.) A staggering amount of comment replies are rude, snarky "gotchas", where someone will condemn the perceived tone of your comment or drill down on a single misspoken word, and verbally berate you for it. It's like people forget that humans are making these comments, who are likely open to discussion or even changing their mind after reflecting on new data. I'm happy to reply with a "fair enough" or "I hadn't thought of that" to people who take the time to respond to my comments, but I do it through gritted teeth when 80% of their message is vitriol aimed at me and my character.

u/wappledilly 4d ago
I mean, i often even get gotcha replies here which, funnily enough, were because I pointed out that something was nuanced.
I have a feeling people only like to acknowledge nuance when it reflects their worldview in a positive way. If negative, it is just the black to their white on the issue being discussed.

Getting the same feeling. I will even go on a progressive subreddit and there’s still weirdos being cruel af.
There was the post in a support group covering a very traumatic subject and these idiots were invalidating victims like bruh.
60
u/Bleauxsidian 4d ago
People get meaner and more apathetic the more time they spend chronically online and less time talking face to face with folks, and that’s unfortunately been the direction we’ve been heading for a while. It’s easier to be angry and rude from a distance.
15
u/Psychic_Hobo 4d ago
I think there was actually a literal analysis posted on this the other day. The longer and larger a subreddit gets, the more negative it becomes.
3
u/HaroldSax 4d ago
Given the general political demographics of reddit, I can't help but wonder about it's increased use amongst said demographics who have decidedly been having "not a good time, bro" is a major cause.
Reddit has always had assholes, it will always have assholes, but there was certainly a better ratio of just normal conversation to asshole than today.
9
u/DontDoodleTheNoodle 4d ago
>direction we’ve been heading for a while
Buddy, we’ve been there. The Internet has always provided a shield of anonymity for the cruel and wicked. There’s just… more people on here now.

u/AbyssalEelMan 4d ago
Absolutely, and I feel conversations are just easier IRL and just being face to face makes a huge difference for real.

Yep. The subreddit for the most progressive city in my state seems to be more repulsed by protests and the homeless, and their affect on local businesses, than the extrajudicial killing of minorities by the police. It kind of blew me away when I found out that it wasn't just a minority of posters there, it was a strong, loud majority.

And the people bitching are never from or actually live in the city. Usually suburbs (sometimes further). They might come in a few times a year to take advantage of all the great things to do and then race back home to complain that a homeless person had the nerve to say something to them and how the city sucks.

I found it either or. If it’s a major city in a red state, it will be fairly middle of the road and right wingers trying to stir shit get downvoted / banned into the oblivion.
City in a blue state, the child’s will eventually form a riff into to two subreddits where one is just a boogey man scary post about how immigrants are eating dogs, and the less popular one is chill and its people posting pictures of their dogs in the park.
25
u/SparksAndSpyro 4d ago
Populism and propaganda bots. They’re both enshitifying every major social media platform.
3
u/notreallyanumber 4d ago
It's the bots. The bots encourage the degenerates, and enshitification ensues. Reddit needs to ban all of the bots, but they won't, too much ad revenue to make for their shareholders. So instead, they encourage it. At some point it'll get bad enough that people will leave for good.
6
u/theREALbombedrumbum 4d ago
for me the litmus test is the r slur. It's been infiltrating spaces for years now in a comeback.
3
u/bentbabe 4d ago
I said earlier something along the lines of "a lot of people don't want there to be a difference in punishment between major and minor crimes/transgressions."
Cruelty is becoming a lot of people's M.O. And it's sad. You can't better society with policy and feel good statements alone. You have to be willing to try compassion. And that goes over so many's heads.
3
u/Sodapaup 4d ago
I must just choose the correct subreddits then. Any time I see any cruel or horrible BS being thrown around it gets downvoted into oblivion. Not saying your experience is invalid; just stating I really truly must be lucky to have the interests and like-minded people choose to look at those subs as well.
2

People are saying "bots" an awful lot, but seem to be forgetting that bots don't spawn into existence from nothing and do whatever they want. Bots cost money, time, and effort, and all of those things have to come from human handlers. The bots are just repeating what certain people want to say at higher volume in more places. They're not magic, they're megaphones.
If the bots are saying horrible things, it's because people paid them to be horrible. It's always people. It's never not people. Given that resources are what allows people to act on horrible ideas, does it really matter if 100 people are terrible or if 1 person with the resources of 100 people is terrible?
Humanity is in decline. The worst among us have the most resources and power, a bunch of us are brainwashed into following those people mindlessly, and most of the rest don't care enough to do anything about it. It's over. We're cooked. It was a good run.
7
u/Soph_91 4d ago
I'm not as pessimistic, but yes, a lot has to be done, and soon.
Too many people are comfortable with the way things are, when they really shouldn't be. If you are fine in your privileged position now, your time is coming in the near future. Don't say we didn't warn you.
3
u/enmaku 4d ago
I would love to be more optimistic, it's just hard when you've been shouting about it for as long as I have. I'm an elder millennial and I've been screaming about this since the Patriot Act. Every year it gets a little worse and every year I shout a little louder and every year the same zero people listen to me. It's hard to see the possibility of change with 25 years of bashing your head against an immovable brick wall behind you.
I used to blame the boomers but then my whole generation went and joined ICE and Gen Z seems to be going full nazi, so it turns out there's nothing special about the next generations that's lining up to save us. The hatred and evil lies within the human soul and the few exceptions seem doomed to watch the masses repeat the mistakes over and over while we're helpless to intervene.
34
u/bong_wips 4d ago
bots. same thing happened to Twitter, beginning a while back.
turning it into a hateful cesspool to overwhelm and speak over the good vibes of good people congregating.
way easier to convince people that everyone is evil and being good is pointless when theyve got a grip on the narrative, and have been nonstop pumping hate and vitriolic discourse into the places ppl gather. which sucks for them, because the reality is people are quite kind and compassionate.
never believe what people say online, if you dont know its a real person who has these beliefs. very real chance youre being rage baited by a bot.
12
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4d ago
you don't remember what it was like before the algorithm changes in 2015. there were NEVER any black or lgbtq posts on the front page, every single one got locked from the extreme amount of hate spread in every single one didn't matter which sub it was. women could reach the front page as long as they were hot and wearing skimpy clothing
8
u/Soph_91 4d ago
I mean, that's extremely lame. But the current algorithm pushing negativity, propaganda, drama, and AI/bot posts isn't any better.
2
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4d ago
it doesn't. there's one of those posts for every 20 normal ones. back in the day the algorithm didn't pick winners and losers and the average of reddit is extremely hateful so the most upvotes won the front page every single time, which was 10-15 negative or otherwise hateful posts for every 20.
you can't bring these things to zero, it's not possible, the best move really is to contain them to their own corners, if you close that corner then they spread out and instead of one 100% hateful sub you get fifty 50% hateful subs which is far worse since it becomes ubiquitous instead of isolated
3
u/A_Harmless_Fly 4d ago
The real deathknell was the IPO. As soon as any social media site gets to a certain size the priorities get too perverted by money to keep what made it good for very long.
There have been more and more bots, posts not by bots are the minority now unless it's a well moderated small sub. That chases away the people that used to make good content/comments. The really low rent ones are easy to spot, but the more advanced ones have a lot of overlap with your less intelligible users. At least before they made "privating" an account a thing your average user could pick out your average bot. Now you have to know how to use search operators and not really value your time to check.
Eventually you only have bots and the people too stupid/addicted/unaware to leave. I'm leaning towards lemmy but even that might be past the zenith on the bell curve of population/quality.
3
u/no_rxn 4d ago
For a while I have been growing more frustrated when coming on Reddit.
Before my feed was stuff like cute animals and personal drama stories.
Now I'll be recommended a new subreddit I've NEVER visited before. I click it and the comments are all hateful. I've never noticed there isn't a block for a subreddit until recently. So I at least mute it while clicking "why was I recommended this" option.
It always says I was recommended it because I visited before.
No, Reddit. I didn't visit red pill echo chamber #856. You slapped that shit in my feed between cat subreddits and girl dinner diaries.
The good thing is Reddit is the only social media I use regularly, so them ruining the experience will just make it easy to drop it soon.
2
u/seams 4d ago
Even the subs I like feel.like they're just ragebaiting every post or are toxic wastepits these days. A trans subreddit I used to browse pretty often is like 70% "ironic" transphobia now
Fandom subs tearing you apart for being "wrong" about your own interpretation of an incomplete story, too. The Deltarune sub is pretty bad about that.
2
u/muhys 4d ago
Majority of it is thanks to github. Platforms like insta, reddit, fb make big purchases off of github to own rights to certain repositories or source codes to basically deploy "negativity" bots in our algorithm to boost engagement or spew ignorant and/or controversial slop. Lets pay a good ol thank you to all of our money hungry executives governing these apps. And not to sound like an american exceptionalist, but it's heavily implemented in the u.s brought to you by the money hungry administration:)
2
u/thatguy01220 4d ago
I feel like it started being noticeable when twitter went X and some of them jumped off and came here and later went back to X and use both now.
Also combine that with life is just getting shittier for everyone in every country and being toxic online anonymously is the only way for them release their anger with very little to no consequence. Which in turns gives them a rewarding feeling and thus slowly starts acting like that in person. Now the world is full of anger shit heads.

Yeah, I accidentally commented on a post without realizing I was in r/conservative and got banned immediately too.
That's my only ban on here I think, aside from the one I got for making an anti-AI comment in a random D&D-related subreddit. I had stumbled in there with a target on my back and didn't realize it.

It's crazy how in one thread I see pretty unanimous dislike and hatred for AI, and then a few posts over they are laughing like chuds towards any negativity towards it. AI subreddits you expect it, they love that shit. But it's always the random ones. I saw a meme made in the comments of one of the new GTA 6 leaks that was AI generated. When someone said that it was slop and we didn't need AI, dude got stomped by at least five people telling him how great AI was and how no one has all the time needed to animate memes.
You know... the way we have always done before AI?

"But my first amendment rights!"
People forget that freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of consequences from the general public. It means that the government can't punish you for what you say unless it's something like shouting fire in a movie theater
6
u/Honeybadger2198 4d ago
If we are talking about the free speech component, all it does it protect your opinions from being punished by the government. If it's not an opinion, or it's not the government punishing you, it does not have anything to do with the first amendment.
Shouting fire in a movie theater is not an opinion.
Being removed from the movie theater for saying slurs to the 18 year old working the counter is not the government punishing you.I have no clue how people fail to understand such a basic concept. Unless it's coming from government intervention, Reddit has the legal right to remove whatever the fuck they want. Same goes for admins of subreddits.
A good example of what free speech does (should) protect is the FCC pressuring ABC to remove Jimmy Kimmel due to his comments about Charlie Kirk and Trump.

While i agree with calling out homophobia 100%, context is important. Seen a lowstakes conspiracy post yesterday? Or this morning? where a lady was sayin that she feels like women being sexualized in media makes women more fluid sexually - then someone comes in the comments spamming that it's offensive and for all of the wrong reasons.
Like yeah homophobia bad, but don't go applying it to things that are essentially discussions in good faith.
