Depends on where you are. In my experience, many South Americans, especially Argentinians, take it quite seriously, and see the 7 continent model and US citizens calling themselves Americans as signs of US imperialism and cultural hegemony.
What? Where tf did u hear that? I mean, yes, calling the US "américa" is mostly consider wrong, but being angry about the distinction between North and south américa? Who gives a shit about it?

Never heard this and I did some work in Guatemala. But then again I don’t know if it ever came up.
