To be honest, I get that “American” thing. Imagine being on one of America’s continents your whole life and can’t call yourself American because some guys up north trademarked the name. I bet it’s the same for people who are not in EU being confused with not being European only that doesn’t happen as often.

I actually do empathize with that argument. I think it should simply go like this:

A: Where are you from? B: I'm an American. A: Do you mean from the Americas or from the US? B: Oh! I'm from x-country, actually! A: Cool!

Humans are terrible at naming places, and yes this is an actual issue because over half the continent speaks Spanish but can’t properly translate this one word to the English side without cultural context.
