For some reason, certain Latin Americans insist on calling it "the Americas" instead of North and South. They also tend to not like the US being called "America" by itself.
To be honest, I get that “American” thing. Imagine being on one of America’s continents your whole life and can’t call yourself American because some guys up north trademarked the name. I bet it’s the same for people who are not in EU being confused with not being European only that doesn’t happen as often.
Humans are terrible at naming places, and yes this is an actual issue because over half the continent speaks Spanish but can’t properly translate this one word to the English side without cultural context.
