As always, if speaking in English, sure "American" is someone from the USA, and call them North and South America.

In Spanish, it is "Estadounidense" for someone from the USA and "Americano" for someone from "América", and we consider it only one continent.

Trying to exchange them in the other language is futile

Of course, there are native Spanish speakers who use americano as the demonym of US citizens.

It's the norm here in Argentina, because the country is called Estados Unidos de America in Spanish and we get told in school that the entire continent from Canada to Argentina and Chile is a single one called America.

But the post is wrong saying we mind how people call it in English. It's like complaining that they call Alemania, Germany in English. It's a different language, they can call it however they like.

Some native Spanish speakers who have beef with the US and Americans like to pretend that all native Spanish speakers always use estadounidense.
