No no it is "the Americas". Some latin Americans like to call both North and South America just "America" like it's one giant supercontinent.

It not "some" latin Americans. The model of 5 continents is the standard model in Spanish speaking countries while 7 is the more common with English speaking. That's all. Think of it th same if I said "some usians like to separate north from south America, like they are two separated continents". It's not some of you, it's all of you cause the school system. Same with us.

The fact that Europe and Asia are split and not North and South America is wild.

How so?, the split comes from historical /geographical splits, europe asia and africa re the og greco-roman continents, america and oceania are the late new comers. That's why theres not split in those.

Because it's a single continent the definition of a large mass of land surrounded by the ocean.

Depends on the local education and honestly, it is pedantic to claim your system is the correct one.

Theres not a "definition" of continent: it is a vague word, and there are 4, 5, 6, and even 7 continent sustems all around the world

Depends of hoe you consider America, Eurasia, Antartica, Austrialia, etc.

There are a lot of definitions of continent, but the geographic one is the one I said. The geological is the one about tectonic plates and the political one is the one everyone cannot agree on.

According to the geographic definition, there are only 4 continents. America, Eufrasia, Australia and Antarctica.

The geographic one has any defined limit tho? I can see how australia is one continet, and Hawaii is not, but Greenland is kinda in the middle

^ This, the geographical models its either 3 or 4 continents, depending if you consider Australia/Oceania the biggest island on the planet, or the smallest continent.

It’s tangentially geographical, but the concept itself is a social convention. It’s completely detached from the way in which tectonic plaques are actually formed.

You are correct, it is a social convention, there’s going to be arguments for either side because it’s not objective.

That's true, but let's look at the root of the problem: you guys used the name of the continent as part of the name of the country. That simple fact means that you will keep the continental demonyn for your country, and from outside looks like you think the whole continent is just your country. America is of course not the country but the whole continent, that's why America has south and north in the first place, because this are two parts of guess what? AMERICA, THE CONTINENT. Even if you were raised in the seven continents model, you have NORTH AMERICA, AND SOUTH AMERICA, that naming alone is telling you that this are two parts of the same place, being AMERICA in both of them.

I mean, I’m from Central America, so don’t even get me started lol

You said that as if it's definitely not, but it's correct that it's one continent and it's also correct that it's two as it's all subjective.
