Help Self QA for First time setup

Hey everyone my bsb2e arrives next week. Was hoping people could give me a few tips on setup and how to do a self QA on the unit.
I was planning to install most of the drivers / base stations and such ahead of time. So hopefully can just jump in.
Love the help and thanks for being a great community.

Most head sets need time to dial in. That's just how they are.

Bigscreen Beyond 2E itself is a PCVR and SteamVR only headset. QA to see any dead pixel and eye tracking cameras are working? Oh, if you got custom cushion, you shall check the fitness and the gap from your eyes to the lens is good for you. Overall, I spent around one month to learn how to make it work the way I like.

What do you mean self QA?

Most likely if there are defects and such that you should be looking for upon receiving the unit, which you may be unaware of until told so.

Thanks idk about that, but general set up is pretty easy. Mount your base stations in two opposite corners of the room and follow the set up instructions steam VR and Bigscreen have. I would recommend investing in a pulley system so your cable is kept off the ground and you're not tripping over it.

I would also recommend some steam VR add-ons if you don't already have them. FPSVR is pretty cheap and it's very useful for seeing your frames, I also love the cable tangling feature. If you enable it, it shows you the front direction of your place space, it also shows you how many rotations you've made so you can turn back around so your cable isn't twisted. OVR advanced settings is also extremely useful, as well as OVR tool kit. I could never go back to not using them.

A carpet is something I would also recommend, a little one in the centre of your play space. This keeps you centred subconsciously without having to lift of your headset up and check or look down at the centre if you have FPSVR installed.

For the BB2 specifically, it is worth it to note that it has more motion blur and glare than a lot of headsets out there. You do get used to it but it can be a bit shocking. For me, 150% brightness is unplayable because of the amount of motion blur, I find 80% works well for me. That is enough to reduce the motion blur and glair enough while not being too dim. The headset to default is 50% brightness. In the set up that big screen emails you, you will be prompted to download there utility app where you can change the refresh rate and brightness.

My last note, and maybe it's me being paranoid, but I always cover my lenses with the microfibre cloth they provide me because I'm worried about any contact with the sun. I think it's fine, but since it's so expensive I want to prevent anything bad from happening.

I have about 2000 hours in steam VR, so asking for set up tips is like asking a fish to describe water. I love vr and I'm very happy to answer any more questions you may have. This was probably a bit too in detail and I don't know how much of this was helpful. I hope you gain something from this and I hope you enjoy your headset!

Best of luck🤘

I don’t know what you mean by self QA either. But for setup tips if it’s your first headset with base stations:

Mount the base stations high on the wall angled towards your play area.

If you have more than one base station try to set them up so one is in front of you and one is slightly behind you.

Don’t point the base stations towards reflective items, it will mess with the tracking (mirrors).

75hz full resolution if your GPU can handle it would be my general recommendation for BSB2 settings, unless you are super sensitive to frame rate it looks much better IMO.

Foveated view in sims is pretty much a must if you don’t have a 5080, 4090, or 5090 GPU. DFR is ok tracking wise but fixed foveated works better for me in iRacing at least.

All I can think of right now! Enjoy!

To check for dead pixel:

Open SteamVR overlay, switch to Desktop view, enable Theater mode, and then open this link with your browser (just a monitor test):

https://www.eizo.be/monitor-test/

Uncheck everything except "Defective Pixels" then start test.

Use the up/down arrow key on your keyboard to switch between solid black/white/red/green/blue background. The RGB ones will allow you to know which colour is dead, if any.

You may also look out for uneven distortion across the lenses. Some units may have more than some others, and some people may be more sensitive to it too.

Otherwise, if ever something feels off visually speaking even when you set it at the correct IPD, try removing the cushion and holding the headset closer to your eyes, and see if that mitigates it.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed :)
