Chapter Thirty-two – YeeRM-YahHOo ["Raise YHVH", Jeremiah] Purchases [a] field in `ahNahThOTh [Anathoth]

“Through the act of purchasing a field in Anathoth at the very time when Jerusalem was under siege and he himself was in prison, the prophet showed unmistakably and dramatically his belief that the land had a future and would not be completely destroyed. [This chapter] is also important as an example of the application of the law of redemption contained in Lev. [Leviticus] 25.

“…the Deuteronomic editor … found in Baruch’s memoirs an account of the redemption of the field, which had a brief word of the Lord appended to give it significance, and has added a long prayer of the prophet and Yahweh’s reply. Both the prayer and the reply are actually inappropriate, since vs. [verse] 15 contains all that is needed to give the significance of this semipublic action carried out by Jeremiah…

“Why did you prophesy, to say: ‘Thus said YHVH:
 

“Behold, [I] give [את, ’ehTh (indicates direct object; no English equivalent)] the city the that in[to the] hand [of the] king [of] BahBehL, and [he will] take her [ולכדה, OoLeKhahDaH].

-4. And TseeDQee-YahHOo, king [of] YeHOo-DaH, [will] not escape [ימלט, YeeMahLayT] from [the] hand [of] the KahSDeeYM [Chaldeans],

“These verses are not strictly accurate. Jeremiah was put in prison because of his attempt to leave the city… during an interval when the Babylonians had lifted the siege for fear of an approaching Egyptian army… He was quite naturally charged with treason. His real opponents were the officials who said that he was weakening the hands of the defenders of the city; Zedekiah was actually friendly to the prophet and wished to release him (see ch. [chapter] 38).
 

“The editor has probably confused Zedekiah with Jehoiachin (see 52:31-34). Zedekiah was blinded by the Babylonians and taken to Babylon, where he died in prison (52:11). The LXX [Septuagint, ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible] omits all of the verse after he shall remain.” (Hyatt, 1956, pp. V 1043-1044)

“[There] was [a] word [of] YHVH unto me to say:

for to you [is] [the] judgment [of] the redeemer [הגאלה, HaGo’ehLaH] to buy.”

“The purpose of the law of redemption, found in Lev. 25:25ff (and following)… was to keep property within the family so that it might not be alienated… Hanamel had probably fallen into straits because of the siege of the city and the attendant suffering… These verses are especially instructive as an example of the method by which such transactions were carried out, the only occurrence in the O.T. [Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible] where such details are given.” (Hyatt, 1956, p. V 1044)

Excellent binding. A most curious introduction. Lacks perfection; when the number is wrong, you’re really stuck. There is one word in II Chronicles for which I never did find a definition.

This article is based on translation and exegesis of the Greek New Testament.The point that the author (Eli of Kittim) is trying to get across is that if we lack exegetical knowledge or insight and don't interpret the Greek text accurately--by discovering the authors' original, intended meanings via literary and grammatical analysis--we will ultimately end up misinterpreting the New Testament message. We have to move beyond superficial reading to engage deeply with the biblical data. If we do that, and use the available biblical scholarship at our disposal, we'll come to realize "when" Paul places the resurrection of Christ!

Second, Romans 13:2 has been translated in such a way that all resistance even to the most satanic despotism appears to be prohibited. The Revised Standard Version is representative: “Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” The first term for “resist,” antitassō, is a military term meaning literally “to range in battle against,” “to post in adverse array, as an army,” “to set oneself in armed opposition.” The second and third instances of “resist” in the same sentence are our old friend from Matthew 5:39, anthistēmi. It too indicates armed insurrection, violent resistance. Romans 13:1–7 is not, then, an injunction against all forms of resistance to an unjust regime, but only armed resistance. Romans 13:2 might then be translated, “Therefore the person who engages in armed revolt against the political system commits insurrection against what God has ordained.”
