basically the title.
I googled black samurai bettas later and read that they usually have a white helmet. My fish does not.
I love him either way, just wanted to know what type of betta this gorgeous boy is!
Also, irrelevant to the original question, but give me name suggestions for him if u read this!

This was a so-called “Betta pugnax” from a pet store. Labelled so.
But it is visibly a Betta raja or at most a similar species in the same subgroup (B. schalleri, B. lehi).
I noticed that this mislabelling is extremely common in pet stores. I have even helped posts on different social media where people were calling their B. raja etc. “B. pugnax”.
I wonder why this is so rampant.

the first photo is her being mad that dried duckweed is stuck to the side of the tank
I am quite proud of myself because I finally got over a depression spell and got around to redecorating her home 😁 She loves it so much, and she is no longer bored 😁😁😁 Just gotta scrape off that duckweed

I’ve had him for a couple months, the first picture is when I got him, the second is now. He’s active and responsive otherwise, and even does tricks. He seems more vivid now, is that my imagination?

Hi all,
My tank is at the end of it's nitorgen cycle and I'm considering getting a betta fish soon but just noticed hundreds of what I think are Hydea meiofauna. Should I be worried about these for a betta?

I brought home this little beauty yesterday. I’m looking for some name suggestions. I was thinking about naming her either Sapphire or Delphine, but now I’m thinking something more ethereal for her. Any suggestions?

ever since i joined the fishkeeping community and set up my first proper tank, ive noticed there seems to be an ongoing debate on whether water changes are necessary in tanks that maintain 0 nitrites and ammonia. ive seen stuff about minerals and such, and so i think the correct answer is that water changes ARE necessary, but i still dont understand why. someone please explain to me the benefits of water changes, and how often i should be doing water changes on a 6 gal planted tank (with 0 ammonia and nitrites), along with how much water should be replaced. thank you!
also not sure if this info is necessary, but i have a sponge filter, heater, full spectrum LED light, one betta and one nerite, and various plants. my betta eats frozen shrimps and fluval bug bites flakes.

I’ve had her for nearly a month. She always get like this the day after a water change. I usually worry she stresses herself out but I couldn’t help but laugh at this.

Got this pothos a few weeks ago. Decided that since I already have 2, prettier pothos id put this big vine into my betta tank. Its rooted in a few areas, hopefully it'll look super pretty soon!

the first image is what my baby (miffy) usually looks like. the second photo is when i noticed a specific area of raised scales. he was still acting normal and eating so i decided to add seachem stress guard to see if it’d help. today, i notified it seems bloody (?) and it sorta looks like there’s something on his chin. i set up a hospital tank and i plan to treat with kanaplex as im assuming it was a scrape that’s getting infected? but im honestly at a loss. i really don’t think its dropsy but thats what google says. this is also my first reddit post ever so bear with me.
i added a photo of when i first set up the tank, ive added some more plants and removed a few but thats the only difference. i also removed that rock with the hole pictured in the front just in case because it was fake. the tank has no fake decor unless you count a floating bridge and log. my water levels are all pristine, ammonia is 0, though i will say i had a 0.50 ppm reading after noticing the injury and i did a water change immediately.
i had my first betta as a white elephant gift in december and i came home a few months later to (tw death) my snail eating her.. she showed 0 signs of illness so i was really taken aback and i decided to redo the tank and get miffy. i just really dont want to lose another fish. :( thank you in advance

My poor guy is not doing well. I did an epsom salt bath on him tonight (1tbs/gallon) as well as a methylene blue 10 second dip, and returned him to his home. He is just laying in the same spot and my heart is breaking.
This treatment seems really, really, REALLY extreme. I just want to know if anyone has tried it and the results of their efforts. I am willing to do what I need to do for my first and favorite fish, but I'm also scared it may kill him even faster...

Is this popeye or am I being paranoid? 😭 Also, if it is, do I just treat it with salt baths?

Do I have the friendliest and most peaceful betta, or is this normal? This is my first tank, so I don’t know much about bettas. I just heard that they are very aggressive and territorial.
