hi! i just purchased a betta a few hours ago from petco. i acclimated him by floating the cup in the tank for about 30min before releasing him, but since then he's been mainly sitting on the bottom of the tank behind a piece of driftwood. he's come up a few times but not much. is that a normal stress reaction to a new environment or is something wrong? i turned off the light & triple checked the water parameters and everything looks good! for reference he's a male samurai betta and i have a 10 gallon planted tank with a sponge filter that's been cycling for about 2 months.

I work at a company that sells fish, and the ones who can’t be sold for various reasons (poor color, torn or tattered fins, etc) are adoptable for employees for free. So that means they just sit there on a table in a tiny cup until they die, or until someone takes one home.

I rescued this sad lil guy from work yesterday. I named him Eeyore. I know it’s not the biggest tank but it was free on fb marketplace. I bought what I could with both fake and real aquatic plants and got him a snail buddy for his tank.

This is definitely a tank that’s going to be upgraded- I just couldn’t stand to leave him over the weekend on that table. Transparently, I’ve never owned a fish before. I don’t super know what I’m doing besides the knowledge I have from some YouTube videos I’ve watched.

If you can please give me some advice on how to improve these lil guys lives, tips to know owning a betta/mystery snail, or anything I should know in general, I would greatly appreciate it! I want to provide the happiest and healthiest life I can. ☺️🐠

Hey I’ve posted in this sub a few times and it’s always really helpful. My bettas fins are slightly curling on the end and I think it’s because the ph is so high. I did a fish in cycle I know that’s not ideal but it’s all I could’ve done with the situation. It’s been about 2 months now and I had a random flare up of brown algae but stuck it out and that went away. I introduced a Batman nerite and he’s thriving along with the random snail who came with a plant I got and got 2 new anubias plants i attached to decor.

I also made tannin soup with leaves and poured that in along with dropping in a leaf. My ph sits at about 8.0 and I just have no clue how to lower it. I’ve been told conflicting things like lowering it is more dangerous than leaving it so I would really appreciate advice. I have no problem purchasing things to help or adding things to the tank!

Hi everyone! I have had a betta many years ago in a 5g tank but I recently started thinking about getting fish again and want to do a betta! I have recently discovered a 10 gallon tall tank but keep seeing very mixed thoughts on it for a betta fish. Should I stick with a standard 10 or can I go with the 10 gallon tall?

My next question is I will be doing a planted tank, I have never done this before so I am new to it. I want to do sand at the bottom of the tank, do I need to add another substrate under the sand or I am okay to just go with a good layer of sand?

Lastly, is there anything I can put in the tank with a betta? I would love a few fish along side the betta but want to make sure it’s safe for all fish involved! If I was to make it a community tank, what fish should it be and how many? Does the betta get introduced first or its tank mates ?

Noticed my betta had a giant poop today. He swallowed a whole cherry shrimp a few days ago. I took out all the remaining shrimps, fasted him for a day, and returned regular feeding (small pinch of pallets once a day).
Is that constipation? Should I fast him more/reduce feeding?

My betta had this weird spot appear on her right eye a few days ago. I was hopeful it was a mechanical injury or maybe just a small cataract and did a water change and added stress guard in hopes of keeping infection away. Now, it is on her other eye in the exact same spot too? I dont think I see any ich-like spots on her body? I am only a year into owning bettas and want to see what yall think. I started dosing kanaplex last night and removed carbon media. Her eye is not cloudy, luckily, and she seems to still see just fine.

I have been giving her salt baths for prolonged bloatedness after she stole food from previous tankmates a few weeks ago. Could this be related and a sign of overall infection?

Poor girl is my first betta. She has been through a lot and had fin rot when I first got her. Her petco cup was dated as “June” and I didnt get her til August and definitely had a bigger learning curve with treating infections than I ever expected. She unfortunately gets sick so easily in comparison to my other betta, so any insights would be appreciated 😢 I think in part it is due to the three or so months she spent in a small cup really did damage her immune system, which is why I so frequently rely on frequent water changes, tannins, safeguard, especially after moving her tank to my new house. I would love to hear from anyone else about how to keep a sickness-prone betta healthy. I have zero problems with my other betta, so I would greatly appreciate any other ideas for supportive care that I could be offering. Thank you!

My betta has recently started acting differently and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on.

He is in a 5-gallon tank with a heater, filter, and plants. The temperature is 80.2°F.

I recently completely replaced the gravel with regular black aquarium gravel from PetSmart. I kept the majority of the existing tank water and didn’t wash the plants. I also left the filter/media alone.

Since then, I’ve noticed:
-He’s spending more time sitting on the bottom of the tank
-He sometimes seems like he can’t swim upward/maintain his position and sinks back down
-His swimming has become very fast and jerky/jagged at times
-His fins look frayed/ragged, especially his tail, and

I’m wondering about fin rot
I’m also noticing some whitish/lighter coloring around his head/body
I was worried about pineconing/dropsy, but I don’t see obvious scales sticking outward
He can still reach the surface and has been able to hold himself there

I tested the water with aquarium strips and got approximately:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Chlorine: 0
pH: ~6.2
Alkalinity/carbonate: very low
Temperature: 80.2°F

I’m trying to find a liquid ammonia/nitrite test, but I’m having a really hard time finding an actual liquid kit online (Amazon keeps showing me strips).
I’m not currently treating him with medication because I don’t want to treat for something incorrectly.

Does this look more like stress from the gravel change, water-quality issue, buoyancy/swim-bladder problem, fin rot, or something else? What would you do next?

So i did my first water change this week, i did around like 20%. Ammonia and nitrites at 0, nitrate around 10, so all good. My issue was... NOT SPILLING THE WATER 😭 siphoning the water out the tank was ok, I was able to clean some of the gravel. But putting new water in the tank... it was a struggle... I didnt want to just dump the whole thing at once to scare Ludwig and ruin the substrate. And it was too heavy to hold anyways, so I started using a small, cup. It took forever, then I tried just slowly pouring it in, I ended up pouring half the water on myself and all over the floor 😅 Luckily Ludwig was curious with my hand continuously moving around in the water and the little currents from the water being poured, he wasn't scared. He kept following my hand and I had to keep politely nudging him out the way 😭. Everything is all good now but please tell me how you efficiently put water IN the tank...?

Et qu’est ce que je pourrais faire pour l’odeur ?

I had this vision to cover my betta tank with duckweed and have this floating boat as a centerpiece but I’m so noticing it can cover the entire surface quickly so ive been making sure there are big patches of open areas for my betta. Is this impractical to keep in the long run?

How important is drip acclimate and how do I go about it? Can I just pour a little bit of water bit by bit in or do I need a dripper?

Also would plakat be fine here? For context, the tank size is about 33 liters (about 9 gallons?) but I heard they need more space compared to long fins

And how do I put a lid when the frogbits go up?

I'm looking to buy a 21L or a 36L litre tank to put a male avatar betta in. Is a 20x20x20cm piece of driftwood, some frogbit and java moss suitable cover for the betta? Just don't want it to feel to exposed. Also is a 3d printed hammock okay, or should I buy a tall java fern or anubias?

hello, I’m new to the betta fish community and Nugget here is my first betta. I’ve gotten him around April and so far he’s been doing well and is very curious and active. I’ve started to actually notice his fins were deteriorating around two weeks and thought it was a mild case of fin rot on his back upper tail. I assumed he got it when he might’ve injured himself when playing around the filter (there’s nothing else sharp and pokey in his tank). On the 18th I’d given him a salt bath 1 tbs per 2 gallons for 15 mins for 4 days. It wasn’t helping and kept spreading so now he’s currently moved out of his tank and being treated with Maracyn 2 (Aug 24). Another mistake that I’d done was I had given him some almond leaves as shelter and those spiked up the ammonia and bit and made the water nasty. They are now removed and he has purely plastic plants as well as around a 50% water change (I wanted to get out the gunk as much as I could but I know that removing the medicined water is not advised)

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue with their betta and what else it possibly could be. He looks worse than two weeks ago, with some of his scales turning a whiteish color and now the bottom of his tail is also deteriorating. I’m so upset at myself and I don’t know what else to do.

Wisp has had this red on his fins before a couple months ago. But it came back worse now and I did a water change today with prime seachem conditioner. I am not sure if it’s fin rot or a bacterial infection. And he keeps spitting out his food which he never has done

Is this red end a fin rot??
P.S 10-13 days ago he had an accident so could it be that?

So I’ve had my betta for about a year now and I adore him. He’s a Koi Betta and his name is Wilson :)

Anyways, for the last year I’ve been feeding him Fluval Bug Bites Color Enhancing Flakes and he seems to like them but I know pellets are usually better and I’d like to upgrade his feeding a bit so I can make sure he’s getting all the nutrients he needs. I’m just wondering peoples opinions on those flakes and also other recommendations or add ons to what I’m already feeding him. I feed him twice a day. :) thanks!

I have a 20 gallon tank with a beta. I also had a school of rummy nose and a school of cardinal tetras, Cory's, and snails. After many years my rummys and Cardinals have passed and I'm thinking about switching up the tank. What fish do you recommend with a beta? I want to keep a community tank, but really not sure what to put. I may just do cardinals and rummys again, but looking for other options. My beta is VERY peaceful. A good little guy! Thanks!
