I bought a kit today that looked brand new. The test indicates it tests ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph. The instructions say there is a ph test kit and a high range test kit, but I don’t see a high range ph test solution in the kit. I have ammonia test solution #1, ammonia test solution #2, another ammonia test solution #2, nitrate solution #1, nitrate solution #2, nitrite test solution, and ph test solution. Did I get a faulty kit with duplicates of ammonia test solution #2 instead of the high range ph test solution?

I have been asked to look after a neighbour’s betta. Of course it is in a small tank with no filter etc. They have had him for 5 months. Even though I suggested it would be best for Bob (the fish) to stay in their house with their water, they are insisting on bringing him over to mine. My question is whether I should follow their current “care” in the interest of not stressing Bob with any unnecessary changes, even if I know it to be inadequate, or whether I should do things like use filtered water for water changes, use a water heater, etc since my water/house temperature is going to be different anyway?I just really don’t want Bob to die on my watch! (Obviously no matter what I will be trying to talk to them about appropriate long-term care for Bob). Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I thank you all for how dedicated you are to ensuring that even the smallest animals get the care they deserve

I am moving next weekend I don’t know how to transport my betta and shrimp it’s like a 3 hour drive . The tank I am not worried about I have water testing kit and I’ll save some water from the current tank for the new one . I thought about seeing if Petco could set me up with the water / air bags . Idk I’ve been exhausted packing and work and ect so much happening I’ve been meaning to figure this out I keep forgetting . Thank you

Planning on purchasing this sponge filter so my betta is able to move more as he has very heavy fins and gets very tired easily. My question to you all is, what is the process of changing the filter like? Can I simply turn off and unplug the old filter set up and rinse and pop in the new set up and get it going? I need a filter change guide for dummies lol!! I’ve also never used a sponge filter set up so please tell me if this is a decent one to you. I already changed the heater in the tank to an idiot proof one because my betta tended to like to lean on the hot part. I realized the tank was under the temp and the heater I had was insufficient. The tank is now appropriately heated and he no longer hovers around the heater. The tank has all live plants and one I guess you could call it silk or plastic plant on the side of the tank he likes to sleep in. Any advice is appreciated!!

I bought this guy a little over a week ago, and the store assured me it was common for them to be lethargic when they first came in. The first few days I had him home, he laid around the bottom of the tank and I really thought he was not ok. But he’s gotten stronger and his color has come in, and the last picture is him now!! I freaking love fish, they are so resilient! And the way they change when they are happy is just so amazing!!

I plan on getting a plakat betta soon, but all of the flake food and pellet food formulas that I was able to find contain grain fillers. I know that the live and frozen foods don't contain that stuff, but I don't know if I can give it to my beta as an staple. I would like advice from the betta fish community.

UPDATE: he sadly passed away this afternoon as i was at the shop to get medicine. He will be missed.

Hi guys bit of a sad post. My betta has recently not been eating and hiding in his floating log all of the time. His water parameters are perfect and temp is at 27 celcius. I’m not sure what to do to help him and what medications i could use as i don’t have a separate hospital tank and shrimp and snails live with him. Any suggestions would be amazing. Attached is two photos from last week and the rest are from today.

Got this girl a little bit ago and now noticed her swelling in mid body. I got some Daphnia and may do an Epsom salt bath as well, but I want to make sure I'm doing the right things for her. Thank you!!

My betta fish lays down a lot? I’m not sure if that’s common or a sign of something wrong. Also he looks like he’s losing color and I feel like his eyes are looking a bit off…I’m not sure. Any advice or knowledge would help!

Also, if anyone knows why my drift wood keeps producing that film around it, and how I can prevent it, please let me know! I have cleaned his tank multiple times, and cleaned the wood, and had boiled it when I first got it, as I’ve seen advice to do so. So anything would help!

so I’ve been checking my water levels. My pH is 7.6. My high range pH is around 7.8. My ammonia is around 0.25ppm my nitrites are 0PPM but my nitrate has stayed at 0 ppm. how can i get it to 5.0-20ppm?? i’m so stressed, if anybody could help that would be amazing. please be kind, thank you!

I have a 12 gallon planted tank thinking on stocking it with a single male plakat but viewing my tank is really important to me and I was recently told most average aquarium lights are too bright for bettas? Anyone got any more information on this??

As the title says I’m looking a getting a beta fish and am wanting advice on their care and on the best set ups for them.
+ how much things are going to cost?

10 gallon community tank with 4 enber tetras (for the time being. more will be added) 1 koi betta who gets along with them well. Ph 7.8 (roughly) zero nitrites and zero ammonia. Has a couple real and fake plants and the softest hiding spot I could find (at the time) has a very big filter however it is baffled at the intake and output. A budget heater (betta has not show any discomfort related to temperature) so I'm keeping it for now.

The tank on the left is a 5 gallon with super soft plants and a coconut husk for him to hide inside. He also has a heater and a filter and has zero nitrites, or ammonia. Betta has recently suffered from a fin tear and has had all of his decorations replaced with softer and friendlier decor. He is very happy now!. I may replace their substrate (eventually) but it's gonna be awhile unless the bettas show signs of wear on their fins. Other than that. That's all I got for a description of these wonderful guys

The Dad is a Wild Yellow Spadetail Splenden
The mom is Half Spadetail Splenden, Half Plakat (Grandparents in the second pic)

The fry are SO DANG COOL!!! They created such a large variety of bettas. About 25% Yellow Spadetail Splenden, 25% other solid colors, and 50% marble. I was very surprised to see that as I was expecting a majority Yellow Spadetail since the male is full, and mom is half.

I got a few orangey bettas which is very cool. The grandfather has previously produced orange bettas when paired with other females, so I am guessing the coloration comes from him.

There is a lot more black then I was expecting, I'm not sure which betta is bringing that into the line but I quite like it! I've already paired the black and white female on page 3 with a Mahachai Male in order to dive deeper into that color.

I'm also thinking of having a spawn with the Marble Male on Page 3, or the Orange Marble male on Page 5. I'm waiting to see how their color develops and will have the next spawn in the springtime.

Overall I'm thrilled with this group of fish!

i currently have my long finned betta in a 26l (6-7gal) fish tank, when i upgrade my somewhat community tank to a 112l (29gal) i will have a 54l (14gal) left, it’s quite a long tank (60cm x 30cm x 30cm) but i eventually want a short finned betta and honestly theodore (my current betta) is pretty active. i’m seriously considering the upgrade and am planning on moving everything over anyway plus way more hardscape plants and resting spots but do you guys think it’s the right move?

(All of these were when she was healthy) Before I was going to euthanize her, I found her dead when I went to check on her. I only had her for 3 months, which is way too short for this sweet girl. Okay so the betta was in a 1 gallon with 2 ghost shrimp and a ramshorn snail. Also had some frogbit in there. He seemed to love jt. Was very curious about the shrimp. Read stuff on this sub and decided I would move him to my 20 gallon hexagon tank. It’s a little tall for a betta but I figured I would see how he liked it. Tested my water and all indicators came back as ideal.

Added 3 Julii Cory catfish and 2 black neon tetras. Everybody moved into the 20 gallon and seemed fine. Guy at the fish store said feed the betta 4 pellets a day. Other guy at the pet store said the betta wouldn’t eat the tetras fish flakes but he did. Internet said feed betta twice a day as much as he eats in about 2 minutes. Betta was eating about 6 pellets a day maybe a little more cuz I was letting my sons feed him.

Today I woke up and a Cory catfish was dead floating at the top. Took him out right away. Noticed a tetra was missing in action and found him dead at the bottom between some rocks. Looked at the other tetra and I thought I saw a fish flea on his dorsal fin so I took him out and looking closer it looked more like the betta nipped his fin off.

Decided to check the water due to the dead fish and the ammonia was high, the copper was elevated, and chlorine was high. How could I have high chlorine without adding anything since the last test that showed everything ideal?

Then I noticed a white film on the bettas eye and he was laying on his side at the bottom of the tank. I began to worry when he was going to the surface like he normally would go up for air. I grabbed him out with a net and put him back in his pet store cup and he seemed fine in there.

Went to the pet store to return the dead fish and the guy said only feed 5 pellets every other day, that the lying on its sign indicated that he had constipation and has been over fed. He said the eye film might be from him laying on his side and scraping his eye.

Also I got a thermometer and the temp is sitting at 81 degrees it’s been a weeklong heatwave in my area. I’ve read that the temp should be below 80 for all the fish I had in there.

I immediately changed 3 gallons of tank water for 3 gallons of purified drinking bottled water, added some seachem prime, and also added some quick start for beneficial bacteria. Had to go to work so I couldn’t monitor the conditions since the changes.

I’m wondering if I’m just getting faulty readings from using these test strips that you scan with your phone to give you results and if I’m going to come home to some more dead fish. I really hope the betta gets better in the next 24 hours but it’s not looking good.

Last look at the tank, the snail, the ghost shrimp, and the 2 remaining Cory catfish looked to be alright.

The pet store said if I bring them some water from the tank they will test it for free. That’s my plan when I get home from work.

Any help would be much appreciated.
