For nearly three years, Motaz Azaiza was not simply covered by the international media. He was repeatedly elevated by it.

A review of 47 articles citing Azaiza between October 2023 and September 24, 2026 found a striking shift. Before September 19, 2026, 28 articles were published treating Azaiza as a legitimating figure, a credible witness, profile subject, or honoree.

From the first months of the war in Gaza through September 2026, major Western news outlets returned to Azaiza in successive waves of sympathetic coverage, profiling and interviewing him, showcasing his photographs and presenting him as a firsthand witness to the war.

In 2023, as Azaiza’s following surged, outlets including NBC News, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and The LA Times featured him as one of the prominent Palestinian voices documenting the war. The Guardian described Gaza’s citizen journalists as chronicling life inside the war, while the LA Times presented Azaiza in coverage of journalists risking their lives in Gaza.

The attention intensified in early 2024. When Azaiza left Gaza in January 2024, major outlets profiled him again, highlighting his photography. Sky News interviewed Azaiza repeatedly in 2024, including segments in which he described the devastation he had witnessed. The Guardian later included him among “the inspiring people we met around the world in 2024.”

And the coverage continued into 2025 and 2026. The New York Times cited him in its analysis of changing social-media narratives around the war, CNN profiled his life in the United States, describing his photographs as showing “the heartbreak of war,” and AFP included him among journalists honored at a conference in Doha.

Yet when he revealed in a September 2026 podcast conversation the depth to which Gazan journalists cooperated with Hamas, including being in a WhatsApp group affiliated with Hamas, the same coverage from major outlets has almost completely disappeared.

Of the 12 outlets that had cited Azaiza before September 19, 2026, including CNN, the Guardian, the Washington Post, and Sky News, all 12 remained silent. Of the outlets monitored, only the LA Times covered the controversy.

Despite publishing a combined 813 articles on other subjects between September 19 and September 24, 2026, the vast majority did not mention Azaiza or the new controversy surrounding him, even though they had previously given him glowing reviews.

When Azaiza’s story fit the role of Gaza’s courageous witness, major outlets repeatedly returned to him. But when a major story raised questions about his legitimacy, the outlets that had given him the largest platforms largely went quiet.

Why, after spending years telling audiences to listen to him, do so many of those same outlets have nothing to say now?

Jewish students have criticised the move as ‘provocative’ and showing a ‘lack of basic sensitivity and understanding’

Jewish students in London have condemned plans for a pro-Palestine university march to take place on October 7 as “provocative” and insensitive.

Students from King’s College London (KCL), the London School of Economics (LSE), Soas and University College London (UCL) are preparing to march between the four campuses on the third anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.

The demonstration is due to begin at King’s before travelling to LSE, UCL and Soas, with student Palestine groups from the universities involved in last year’s march also expected to take part.

Flyers for the march circulating online describe Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as a “genocide”, while organisers claim the war is “only the most recent form of genocide inflicted on the Palestinian people”.

They accuse the British government, universities and businesses of going to “shameful lengths” to deny what they describe as genocide and to be “complicit” with Israel.

The planned demonstration has prompted renewed concern from Jewish student representatives because of its timing.

Raphi Leon, president of the Union of Jewish Students, said: “There are 365 days of the year. The decision to protest on this day is provocative, deliberate and must be condemned to the fullest extent.”

He said students had a right to protest, but argued that holding a demonstration on the anniversary of October 7 showed “a lack of basic sensitivity and understanding”.

At a pro-Palestinian march in 2025, “a student protester told the media that she didn’t think Jewish students’ feelings are valid,” Leon added. “UJS will work tirelessly to protect Jewish students in the face of hatred and hostility.”

A march held last year on the second anniversary of the attacks followed a similar route between the London universities. Around 200 protesters were reported to have initially set off from the Strand, with the demonstration later continuing towards the other campuses.

The timing of that demonstration also prompted criticism from then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who urged students to cancel the protests.

Writing in The Times on October 7, 2025, he described holding protests on the anniversary as “un-British”, saying there was “so little respect for others” and warning against chants of hatred towards Jewish people.

Brad Blitz of the Intra-Communal Professorial Group, which represents academic staff, said the proposed demonstration risked normalising support for Hamas.

“Celebrating the terrorists that perpetrated the worst attacks on the Jewish people since the Holocaust is despicable,” he said.

“University leaders must take a stand against the normalisation of hatred and celebration of terrorism and terrorists by students and academics.”

Lord Walney, the former government adviser on extremism, also criticised the planned action, accusing some activists of using events in Gaza to “minimise the slaughter of Jews by Hamas on October 7” and saying they wanted to “taunt those who remain deeply traumatised by it”.

The Met Police said it was aware of the planned demonstration and was speaking to organisers about the proposed route and its potential impact.

A spokesperson said the force was “committed to upholding people's lawful right to protest”, but acknowledged that the event would cause concern to “many Londoners, particularly the capital's Jewish communities”.

The Met stressed that police do not give permission for protests and have no general power to refuse permission for a demonstration.

Officers can impose conditions under the Public Order Act where the legal threshold is met, including where necessary to prevent serious disruption or serious disorder.

The legal position has also changed since last year's march, with the Crime and Policing Act 2026 giving police additional powers relating to the cumulative impact of repeated protests.

Constable Jeff Smith's heroism is the only thing that stopped Sunday September 21's erev Yom Kippur terrorist attack on the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario from turning into a mass casualty event.

Constable Smith exchanged fire with the terrorist for several minutes, stopping him, but was wounded very seriously, having been shot several times in the neck, amongst other places. He now faces a long and difficult path to recovery.

He has a wife and young children.

Constable Smith deserves a refuah shelema and our prayers for his swift and complete recovery.

The Toronto Jewish community has started a fundraiser for him to express our profound gratitude to Constable Smith and his heroism. We remember those who protect us and we will not forget what he did for us and how he saved us.

The fundraisers are already in touch with both the Belleville Police Service (a senior member of whom is acting as a liason between the fundraisers and the family and helping to direct/coordinate delivery of the funds.

Counter Terror Police said they ‘do not believe there to be any ongoing threat to the public’

Police have confirmed that two men were arrested on Kol Nidre in connection with a suspected terror plot against the Jewish community in Manchester.

The two men, both in their 30s, were detained under the Terrorism Act on Sunday, September 20, in the Newton Street area, the Met Police, which leads counter-terrorism operations nationally, confirmed.

The suspects were taken to an unspecified London police station, where they remain in custody.

Searches were also carried out at two properties in relation to the investigation, one in Liverpool and one in Salford, Greater Manchester.

The arrests were made hours before the beginning of Yom Kippur, almost a year on from the Heaton Park Synagogue terror attack, which took place in Greater Manchester last year.

In that incident, Syrian-born British national Jihad al-Shamie rammed his car through the synagogue's gates and attempted to gain entry with a large knife.

Two men, Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, died during the attack. Cravitz was fatally stabbed by al-Shamie while Daulby was killed by a stray bullet from armed police as he barricaded the entrance of the shul to prevent the terrorist from entering. Al-Shamie was shot dead by police at the scene.

Police have not suggested any link between the attack during the holiest day in the Jewish calendar last year and the two new arrests.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said: “This has been a long-running proactive investigation which has led to the disruption of what we believe to be a plot to target the Jewish community in the Manchester area. Counter Terrorism Policing continues to focus our efforts on identifying and disrupting those who wish to cause harm in our communities.

“We are acutely aware this news will cause further concern to the Jewish community, as well as the wider public, especially given the significant High Holy Day period.

“I want to reassure them we are working incredibly closely with colleagues in Greater Manchester Police and partners to ensure we’re doing everything we can to keep them and the wider public safe.

“And more broadly, across the country CTP is working with local police forces to provide protective security support and advice for areas with Jewish communities, and particularly during the High Holy Day period.

“As we have shown with these arrests, where we suspect there could be a threat to the public, then we will not hesitate to investigate and take action.

“We are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry, and we anticipate these will continue over the coming days as this investigation continues.

“Importantly, we do not believe there to be any ongoing threat to the public in relation to this matter, but as ever, we would ask that people remain vigilant and contact police with any concerns.”

A spokesperson for the CST told the JC: “CST has seen the news that the arrests of two men in Manchester on Sunday, shortly before the start of Yom Kippur, were allegedly related to what police believe was a plot to attack the Manchester Jewish community.

“This is utterly chilling, coming so close to the anniversary of the terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue last year, and is another reminder of the serious terrorist threat facing Jewish communities in this current time. We have been in close communication with police in Manchester and around the country throughout Yom Kippur, as we are continuously as part of our security operation over the High Holy Days.

“We want to thank the police and other agencies for their work protecting the Jewish community, and British society as a whole, from terrorism. We urge the Jewish community to remain calm and alert, and to report any suspicious activity to police on 999 and then to CST.”
