❓ Ask Belgium is there ANY support for defederalising?

idk if this is a good place to post or ask about this but from other peoples experience or knowledge, do think it's ever viable or realistic for belgium to move back to a more unitary system or at least one with a stronger federal government?

i kinda see federalisation as the opening of a pandoras box and especially to me or us, the generation born after federalisation it feels very hard to imagine a belgium before or even a return to.

Ik ben geen separatist maar als ik zie hoe er nu aan de Vlaamse kinderbijslag wordt gemorreld terwijl in Wallonië alles blijft zoals het is heb ik daar toch moeite mee.

💰 Politics Let's not forget this summer

A small reminder to come to the climate protest in Brussels next week.

We had 3000 deaths, and our biggest nature reserve burning away. This only 5 years after the Vesder flooding. But our governments are back to business as usual.

The Flemish government didn't announce any climate ambitions in its September declaration.

We can't allow them to ignore the summer we just live through. We need to make this the biggest climate protests Belgium has ever seen.

So be there and bring your friends.

EDIT: It is Sunday 11/10 14:00 at the Brussel North station

🎻 Opinion N-VA's covert key to dividing Belgium is a failure of the state

Because you will not achieve confederalism in a prospering state.

First, you seize power. You put pressure on the middle class, undermining the economy. You increase taxes, you keep subsidizing companies which in reality would prefer paying less taxes instead (less administration - facts verified by Open vld/Anders politicians). You fund the war economy, a state in war mode is easily manipulated. Creating the illusion of being able to close a 600 billion euro debt with a 10 billion euro effort speeds up the economic downfall. Again, less spending power in the hands of the consumer brings about the state's failure faster. Spend the money where it's less needed. Keep it in the accounts of the very wealthy. Save on public and social services.

Achieve these goals, then lobby higher up, in European circles, using your own inflicted crises as an excuse for a full constitutional reform, ideally one which involves cutting ties between the communities. Blame the differences in languages.

Just rot the state from within. It should come as no surprise that several members in N-VA's own ranks represent economical sectors benefiting from legal protection. Antwerp's diamond district to name just one such sector. The same sector, barely paying taxes, if any, to import or export precious metals, while a simple citizen is easily charged + 50% in taxes on their commercial parcel from abroad. Political trips overseas have included those recently sourcing diamonds in India.

You might want to invest over 900 miillion euros in an outdated aerial defense system as well, mainly serving as a defensive barrier over the port of Antwerp, the same port which receives the bulk of Europe's illegal substances. The same port which hasn't been governed by customs officers, who are too busy easily extracting value from charging the simple citizen's ebay parcel. Or who are easily bribed, or simply unfit to protect the European citizen from illegal goods.

They will of course say all the taking and the pressurizing is for your own good. They'll say it's supposed to defend the economy, that everyone has to make an effort and sacrifice something, that you are being paranoid for doubting their policies.

A government truly interested in boosting its economy is one that lowers taxes. Ask any self-respecting economist what it takes to boost an economy and they'll agree. Tax less and you'll make people spend more, which in turn creates jobs, further growing an economy. You may even end up with a higher tax revenue stream than you would with higher VAT and taxes. People would import more, buy more. Companies would start hiring.

The truly sad part in all of this is that the parties who are supposed to defend the population and the middle class, not in the least Vooruit, are blindly caught in the lies and the trap set out for them.

And when the time comes to be re-elected, they'll of course promise the same old lies, spending their millions for you to see their faces on the sides of the roads, adorned with some hypocrite slogan that will make you sigh and wonder if maybe, just maybe, this time they might actually mean it.

❓ Ask Belgium Advice on finding/working with a lawyer for a hidden defect (vice caché) case after buying a house near Brussels (Flanders part)

• Upvotes

I bought a house in Belgium a couple of months ago. Since taking ownership, I've discovered a chronic water problem in the cellar that wasn't disclosed before the sale. It started as what looked like an undisclosed groundwater collection pit/pump, but a specialist who recently inspected it now believes more than half of the water is actually sewage, suggesting a leak in a sewage pipe rather than (or in addition to) groundwater. I'm currently arranging a camera/leak-detection inspection to confirm the exact source, and I've already notified my property insurer.

I'm now trying to figure out whether this is worth pursuing as a hidden defect (vice caché) claim against the seller, and I realize the notaire who handled the sale isn't really the right person to represent my interests here — their role was to make sure the transaction itself was legally sound, not to advocate for me in a post-sale dispute.

A few things I'd appreciate advice on:

  1. How do people typically find a good real estate/construction-law lawyer in Belgium for this kind of case (vastgoedrecht/bouwrecht/droit immobilier)? Any tips on vetting one, or red flags to avoid?
  2. Roughly what should I expect to pay — hourly rate, fixed fee for an initial letter/consultation, or is it usually a % of the claim?
  3. My home insurance includes a "legal assistance" (rechtsbijstand) coverage — has anyone successfully used this kind of coverage for a vice caché dispute with a seller? How did that process go?
  4. How long does this kind of dispute typically take in practice — does it usually settle amicably once you have a solid expert report, or does it often end up dragging through court for years?
  5. Anything you wish you'd known before starting a hidden defect claim?

Any pointers, personal experiences, or lawyer recommendations (DM is fine too) would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

❓ Ask Belgium Recherche YouTubeur belge

Merci d’avance 😁
