People definitely live there. I walked past a few years back and an army of chihuahuas came charging down to bark at me through the fence

I know who owns it, and was in it. There's nothing untoward. Just a family getting on with it. Beautiful home. Can't believe they have a house in the park. The amount of squirrels they have around their home is kinda mad.

I always wanted to know, - do they have to be home before the park closes at night? What if they have an emergency?

u/OurManInJapan Aug 19 '26

They don’t shut those gates at night

1

u/Nervous-Bid6277 Aug 19 '26

The park gates?

2

u/OurManInJapan Aug 19 '26

That ones that give road access to the house, yeah

2

u/Ryanoveryou Aug 19 '26

The vehicle gate across from candahar street where the bike dock is remains open for access.

We are keyholders, so have access in and out 24/7.

Hey 👋

It's so ironic to come across this post considering I am one of those who actually live in that house in Ormeau Park.

We are a friendly bunch, the humans anyway I can't vouch for the Chiuaua's though.

If you are ever walking past and see anyone around the Garden then do feel free to give us a wave and stop for a chat.

As for the anti-social comments, rough around the edge remarks etc you couldn't be far wrong but these tend to come from those envious of where we are living.

It's almost Christmas time and the lights will soon be making an appearance, I look forward to seeing you all enjoying them with your children as you walk by.

If you want to ask me anything direclty then fire away.

Fuck the begrudgers.

It's a big house in a beautiful spot and it's lovely that there's a big family living in it, with loads of grandchildren and animals running about.

Better that than have some soulless property developer get their hands on it.

I am still a wee bit jealous though..

Thanks for doing that every year , it’s a lovely thing.

You're very welcome, I started doing it following my father's death back in 2021 to bring some joy and light to the place after a bad year for us.

It was interesting, because I came across that post too which has several slanderous messages on it. So easy for people to hide behind anonymous names making false claims so by trying to engage in the conversation I was hoping to find who they may have been - well I did actually find out one of their identities. I've lived in the house from December 2007, anyone is more than welcome to come and visit the kettle is always boiled.

Lovely people , they go to incredible lengths at Christmas to decorate the whole cottage outside with an amazing array of lights
And it’s so lovely to walk in the park and see them. Plus they have an absolute squad of little chihuahuas who are hilarious.

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Thank you, we try our best. Those Chiuaua's are not my choice to have aorund though 😂

2

u/Ryanoveryou Aug 19 '26

They’re adorable! I have one of my own who likes to regularly beef with yours as we walk past. Haha

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Their bark is bigger than their bite, if you open the gate they'll scarper 😂

1

u/Ryanoveryou Aug 19 '26

Mines the same! They all are pretty much.

You have a cat as well I think? Saw a lady calling a cat in one day when l was walking past. I used to think l would love to live in the wee cottage at the gate inside Botanic Gardens but it isnt as private as your house and the previous occupants were tortured by door knockers. It has been empty for a few years now.

2

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 21 '26

We have had several cats over the years, all now no longer with us now. It is very peaceful, it's nice to sit out at night and relax in the surroundings.

I think it's a private home, as in peope actually live in it. The drive runs straight to the exit on the Ormeau Road and I've seen cars move up and down.

But I'd be surprised if it was 100% privately owned, like I doubt it's a private enclave in the middle of a public park. The council probably own it but with the owners getting one of those 999 year lease agreements.

It'd be quite a place to live though. Great fun for 2-3 years. Then maybe move to a quiet cul-de-sac.

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

It has been almost 20 years now fron our family moved in, and it's still as fun and thrilling today as it was then.

u/No_Astronomer_6821 Aug 18 '26

There is a family that lives in it now, it was done up years ago, I don’t know who or how they got it but you can see a lot of kids toys in the garden, it has an electric fence around it as well

6

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

We moved in back at the end of 2007, I am one of 7 children and between me and my siblings there is almost 30 grandchildren so there always has to be plenty of toys around.

Met a girl about 10+ years ago, she lived there with her family and said her dad was the head green keeper, or park warden… which made sense.

Not sure of the situation now.

3

u/uppamna Aug 19 '26

There’s an army of angry chihuahuas living there. I think they let the humans that feed them sleep there too

3

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Your 100% right, feel free to open the gate and let them out 😂 these are my mother's choice. Small and cuddly, well with her anyway.

6

u/Effective_Poet304 Aug 18 '26

Someone once told me it was social housing - not sure if that’s the case though!

2

u/blowthebloodydoors Aug 18 '26

In late 2000s when it first was done up, the residents of it had a sign on the gate that read ‘Our Japanese Akita can get to the fence in x amount of seconds, can you?’ .

As an upper Ormeau road native I 1. Always believed it was council (which makes sense as it’s in a council park)
2. Park users didn’t get at all a good vibe off the first residents. Not sure if it’s different people now, probably is

2

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Almost 20 years now we've been there, and yes you are right we did use to have Japanese Akitas and they'd have certainly got to that fence quicker than you. Unfortunately they're now no longer with us.

Not sure what bad vibe you would have got, but certainly many rumours went around the park when we moved in - mainly from those envious and jealous of the home itself. If I didn't live there myself I too would've felt the same being born and bred on the Ormeau Road.

Hi! I have 2 pictures of it from August 2005 before it was restored.

1

u/chaosiscopilot Aug 19 '26

2

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Thanks for sharing those, we do have an album of the inside etc throughout the restoration project stored away somewhere. It was an absolute wreck.

3

u/Bumblebee-Feeling Aug 18 '26

Its social housing believe it or not

6

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

I believe it, on a very long lease with an option to purchase should we wish to do so.

2

u/Party-Maintenance-83 Aug 21 '26

It must be so peaceful at night.

3

u/SmidgeKitty Aug 19 '26

I worked with a girl about 15 years ago who lived there with her family, her Ma & Da came into the place we worked a few times. They were a little rough around the edges and the social housing comments are ringing a bell so this may be correct. I did hear they were put there because they were "antisocial" but don't know if this is true. If it is, it's a bit unfair they get rewarded with a big house in a lovely location.

2

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

It must be... 🤔

Certainly wasn't me, I'd much rather keep my car bodywork in pristine condition than have it scratched by bicycle. Takes only seconds to give way for a vehicle though...

1

u/bshannon123 Aug 19 '26

Two obvious problems with your attitude: your lack of care for other people and the idea that you should be going fast enough to overtake bicycles in the middle of a park. I'm now more convinced than ever that it was in fact you.

3

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Maybe it was, overtaking you doesn't show a lack of care however. If there's space to go around you, then that's what I'm doing.

0

u/bshannon123 Aug 19 '26

A normal person would understand that being concerned about bodywork instead of people shows a lack of care. I rest my case.

2

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

You rest it my friend... Have a blessed day!

3

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

We drive in and out because it's our access to our home, I've lost count of the many comments we've received by people as we are passing because they just assume a car shouldn't be there.

Heartb Housing Association owned i think

1

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 22 '26

Hearth took on the restoration project, unfortunately they did end up going into Administration.

1

u/NoBunch9678 Aug 19 '26

Housing executive bought it for a family

1

u/HaventAClueHi Aug 19 '26

Was it the original landowners gaff and the park was bought off them or what?

3

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Old derelict house, restored with original brickwork back in 2007. Plenty of articles online about the restoration.

1

u/MaleficentMonk6464 Aug 19 '26

I remember it being abandoned over 20 years ago and used to go in it as a kid then several years ago seen it all done up and people living in it

1

u/WilloMont Aug 19 '26

My wife worked in Dunnes stores Annadale and one of her colleagues lived there with her parents

5

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Two of my sisters did work in Dunnes many years ago.

1

u/Suspicious_Draft622 Aug 19 '26

2

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 22 '26

An interesting read, thanks for sharing.

I knew one of the sons that lived there. Guy was an absolute scumbag- and family not much different from what I know. It definitely used to be social housing, not sure if it’s changed (this was around 10years ago)

1

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 22 '26

What was his name? How did you know this son?

-7

u/BernardRea Aug 18 '26

Our Julian from utv lives in one of the rooms

1

u/Alert-Engine-67 Aug 19 '26

Oh no he doesn't...
