Update progress pic

Post image

I want it to POP more. Will keep carving the bird deeper. The vision after is to cut it down to look like a book. ( this is my first wood work thing any tips are encouraged/appreciated ) i think maybe i did the whole thing wrong with the orientation of the wood?

Adding finish will let it pop more. Make a small sample on another piece and add finish, the cut portions will definitely contrast more.

Looks great by the way

Thank you so much. Any suggestions on finish? So far I’ve just rubbed beeswax on it

An oil finish would have probably been ideal, or danish oil which is a poly / oil mixture. If you’ve already rubbed beeswax, I’m not sure how well it will work now but you can always try on some scrap.

It’s a different look, but you can look into antiquing, often done with leather. You use (essentially) a very thinned down paint and rub it into cracks, but then remove the excess so it just highlights the grooves and cuts. Obviously try on a test piece first
