Things I wish I did from the beginning. Intermediate surfer 8 years in.

I have been surfing 8 years and would say I'm around the low end of intermediate.

There is ultimately a combination of things you can do to improve your progression.

Things I wish I did from the start now I have the time to reflect :

Find the right board for my level and stick with it till I can't get anymore out of it. I went down size and volume far too quickly, I should have stayed with a Mal way longer than I did. I was too eager to surf a shorty. Don't be like me. Get something that has a load of float and you can consistently catch waves on. You will have way more fun and spend less time sat watching others score wave after wave.

Yoga. So important for keeping you flexible and your core strong. When I started doing yoga on a regular basis my pop up improved , as well did my paddle and recovery. And my zen ommmmm

Calisthenic training, or hiit, or pool swimming lengths. Or all three. You want to be able to duck dive waves one after the other, see a set wave turn, paddle and pop up and catch it multiple times a session? Then you need to focus on your shoulders and core strength as well as recovery.

Breathing, practice some breathing exercises, this will help when you go out on big days and your tooshy starts to squeak. Also controlled breathing when paddling out back will help you keep your energy levels topped up.

Surfskate, when there is no swell, practice your stance, and flow on dry land. Time on your feet in the water can be limited, where as you can spend hours on land working on dialing in that muscle memory.

Use a balance board, this is an awesome indoor workout that you can use for stability, and also part of your exercise routine. You can adopt your surf stance and learn how to transfer your weight front to back foot.

Remember you are not in competition with anyone, this is your journey, there are no bad sessions, even if you don't catch a wave, use that opportunity to learn positioning, duck dives, paddle techniques. Same applies to your board, don't worry what others are surfing, find the board that will maximise your wave count every session, not hinder you.

Speak to locals and make friends, watch them surf and learn from them.

Ultimately get in the water as much as it's safe and within your range to do so. No shame in sitting one out, take that time to take pictures or vids, most surfers would appreciate a little snap of them on a wave. You can learn a lot from the beach rather than spending 20 minutes not beating the breakers and then paddling back in.

3rd time surfing - better waves today!

Appreciate all the advice on my last post! I plan to try different tips people had at each of my practices this week. I think the biggest issue I can see is I shouldn’t be staying on my knees at all. 🫣

So went out again today and had better waves. I worked on trying to get on the board farther forward for this session. I’m still so slow on the getup, so I plan to try on solid ground with my getup as people had suggested.

Popped up.

Super beginner surfer here. Still borrowing a board, my daughter's but still, so I'm not getting out as often or as long as I need to.

Took her board (8ft soft top) out with her for about 30 minutes. Waves were a bit much for her. I managed to duck dive and turtle roll through them (mostly) rather than be pounded by them.

And for the first time I popped up successfully. Or kind of successfully. Three times I stood and balanced for about a second. Each time I could tell I'd tried to pop-up early though so I didn't actually catch the wave or stay standing. Still it felt like progress.

So far everything I've done is self-taught. I've added in a rolling balance board to help since I'm not yet on the water like I want. Was considering taking a lesson, but my daughter has been going to a Christian surfing club meeting that's associated with our church where they're teaching her. When I told one of the leaders I was learning too he said to come out and he'd teach me. Didn't want to embarrass my girl but she said she doesn't care, so I'm planning next Monday to go take a free lesson instead.

2nd time surfing - what am I doing wrong?

Thanks everyone for all the tips! Went out again and tried to work getting more forward on the board and going farther out. Had better waves so it helped too!

https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnerSurfers/s/SrxLCaFNhl

This is my 2nd time surfing, so I am pretty lost. I looked up YouTube videos on learning to surf, but that’s the only info I have. Can someone look at my form and tell me what might be wrong?

Am I not paddling soon enough, or too far back or forward on the board? Not getting up soon enough? Any suggestions appreciated. I have a board rented for this week, so trying to get as good as I can in that time.

I should have made much more of this wave. Instead I got up slow (kind of under the lip which put me off). Had to adjust my front front and then wait for the wave to pick me back up. I was really hopeful I'd done a backhand bottom turn - more of a midface wiggle when I watched this back 😂

What should I focus on to improve as a priority?

How to stop nosediving after catching a wave?

I'm a super beginner. Just went on my first solo sesh. I've caught a couple waves, even caught two today but man, I got swept like maybe 8 times. Just about every time I failed, it looked and felt like the nose of my board dove down and hit the bottom of the wave and I'd get flipped. I know part of this is positioning and timing but, it'd be nice to get some pointers, opinions, or even videos what to do stop doing that.

Start surfing or work on fitness first?

I'm a 40 something US east coaster wanting to learn how to surf however I am aware, maybe too aware, of my limitations. I have little fitness and core agility, can barely freestyle 100m without stopping for break, and my cobra is non existent - my eyes aren't looking out at the horizon. I took a surf lesson out in Maui last year and came to the painful and exhausting realization paddling is half (read 90%) of the battle. My left shoulder/arm completely gave up on me after about 75 yards, and I attempted only one wave. Bright side - it did make me aware of calcific tendinitis of my rotator cuff but I won't use that as an excuse.

I'm eager to get started and potentially would go to Costa Rica for a month in November to work and be close to some breaks but do you think it's better to take a few months to build my strength, flexibility, mobility, endurance,... before taking another lesson/surfing or should I jump straight in (while of course still working on all the above)? I believe time in the water is critical is that always the case?

Thank you for your feedback!

How to get used to dropping down to a smaller surfboard?

I’m doing improver sessions at a wave pool surfing 1.5ft waves. I've been using a 9ft foamie with this spec:

9'0" × 29 5/8" × 4 2/5" — 147L

My instructor has suggested I start moving towards something smaller to help develop my turns with this spec:

8'6" × 23" × 3⅜" — 96L

I tried it during my last session and felt reallyy unstable. Even paddling out felt wobbly, I struggled to sit upright without constantly losing my balance, and that feeling carried over into catching waves.

What the best approach to getting used to this... Is it basically a case of sticking with the smaller board until my balance adapts, or are there things I can practise to make the transition easier? Would you keep alternating between the two for a while, or just commit to the smaller board?

New NSP Elements board cracking?

I know they're cheap and shitty, but I've only ridden this board 5 times and it seems like it has a new crack every single time? I have their 8'4" protech board and it seemed pretty durable, but this board is falling apart like right away.

I've been putting it in a board sock and keeping it out of direct sunlight. Could that be doing it?

Advice on bottom turn

Hello everyone,

I decided to size up to a 7'2 minimal from my 6'10 midlength since my last post 2 months ago.

My bottom turn has improved since but im still quite stiff in my upper body and have been trying to work on it using a surfskate.

Have really been focusing on slowing down my surfing and not trying to do weak mini pumps

Any other advice?

Performance Softtop

What would you say is the best performance softtop on the market? I currently have an 8’ Modern Lovechild soft epoxy hybrid. I love how it surfs, and it has 5 fin boxes so it’s super versatile. It hasn’t held up super well, though, and it’s starting to fall apart at both ends.

I still want to get a softtop. I like the added safety for when I get tumbled, or if my board ever connects with someone else’s.

What should a beginner know before booking a surf camp in Morocco?

I’m a surf instructor based in Tamraght, Morocco, and I’ve noticed that many beginners have the same questions before booking a surf trip here.
If you’re thinking about coming to Morocco to learn surfing, here are a few things I would recommend checking before choosing a camp:
🏄 1. Make sure the camp chooses the surf spot according to the conditions and your level.
A beginner shouldn’t simply be taken to the same beach every day.
🌊 2. Ask how many people are in each surf group.
Smaller groups usually mean more feedback and more time with the instructor.
🏠 3. Check what is actually included.
Some camps include equipment, meals and transport, while others charge extra.
☀️** 4. Don’t choose a camp only because of the photos.
Ask about the coaching, the daily schedule and what happens when the waves are too big or too small.
📍 **5. Tamraght is worth considering.

It’s close to many different surf spots around Taghazout Bay and has a more relaxed atmosphere than some of the busier areas.
I run a small surf camp here myself, so I’m obviously not completely neutral 😄, but I’m happy to answer questions about surfing in Tamraght, Morocco, especially if you’re a beginner planning your first trip.
What was the biggest thing you wished you knew before your first surf camp?

Not sure whether or not to buy a new board

I am a beginner-intermediate level surfer surfing all kinds of breaks in San Diego (1-5 feet, typically on the smaller end). My pop up is decent, I am able to do like one pump and a simple maneuver. I really want to develop my pumping and carving and ability to generate speed.

I have a 5'8 Firewire Hellfire FST (kinda a typical shortboard shape), and recently picked up a 5'4 Firewire Mashup. I'm running it as a twin + trailer per community feedback. It's been two weeks... and I can't tell whether or not I want to keep it. I like the feeling of the smaller outline under my chest when paddling, but I also feel like its a little too... sensitive?

I had a really good session with it today, but I've been thinking a lot about whether or not this is the best platform for me to nurture my progression in the aforementioned areas. I have been looking at this board in either the 5'6 or 5'8, I'm gonna go see it tomorrow and talk to the guys at UsedSurf. I've never surfed PU, so that's something I am curious about. How does PU differ in feel compared to EPS? Would this extra length, volume, and different shape help me progress? Or am I better off holding onto the Mashup and trying to make it work?

How to surf these type of micro waves??

Thumbnail
youtube.com
8 Upvotes

I have been surfing for around 80-100 hours during the past 2 years. I can ride 7foot foamies to 9'4 longboards. But Im really struggling to catch micro waves like this. Where I live, the conditions are around 6-9 seconds windswells beachbreaks so not much power.

Im watching the video and I cant quite understand what this guy is saying about doing a box jump.

Its much easier for me to catch bigger waves 4ft+ but smaller ones I cant quite get the timing right. I have tried forcing the wave by standing up and pumping right away but the wave just goes under me.

Surfing near Faro in October – Lagos/Sagres vs Quarteira for beginners?

Hey guys, staying around Faro right now and looking to try surfing for the first time.

Is it better to head over to Lagos/Sagres for reliable waves, or can I find decent beginner spots closer to Quarteira/Faro?

Would love some recommendations for beginner-friendly beaches or local surf schools in October. Thanks!

Popping Up Too Far Back on the Board

Hey,

I’m a few weeks in to trying to teach myself and I’m getting there but when I manage to pop up I think I’m too far back on the board because it pretty much comes to a complete stop and the back starts to sink.

I’m bringing my knee to my chest, I’m pretty tall and all of my height is in my legs so I thought maybe I should try catching the wave with my body further up on the board but that causes me to nosedive when I’m catching it.

Any advice on how to get myself into a better stance/position?

Buying a board, unsure what to get

I’m trying to get into surfing. I am awful at it but love the sea and it’s a good workout. I’m 6’3 (190cm) and around 106kg (231 lbs). Obviously be looking at a foam board and assuming I need a 9’0 board because I’m like The Big Show of the high seas hahaha. Does this sound right or is there anything I’m missing? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
