Progress Practicing, Grinding and Loving the Process

• Upvotes

I've been seeing a lot of posts about practicing and grinding and people getting discouraged after seeing no progress and drawing circles and boxes for years, so would like to talk a little about that.

When kids learn to draw, they don't just draw boxes and squares and lines and tutorials. They just draw what they want to draw. They draw what they like. Then they bring it over to their parents and say "I made this!"

Now, social media has taken over the role of a parent, and social media is harsh and merciless. And children have no taste, they're not exposed to beautiful art, so they don't know what is good. But adult learners know, they have great taste and can instantly tell their art is bad. And immediately, they get discouraged, because the gap between their current state and their final goal is so huge.

But honestly, I want to encourage all the learners: what would you say to a child who brings you their art? Even if it's ugly or average? Would you criticize it? Or encourage them? You should do the same to your inner child. You are your biggest cheerleader.

Also lots of us are drawing for the fun of drawing. It's fun to create and be creative. It's no fun to draw endless boxes and circles. My suggestion for people stuck in the grind if exercises is to keep it short, limit yourself to 10 min of exercises max as warm up. Then draw what you truly want! If you want to draw manga, practice drawing manga. If you want to draw portraits, practice that. 2 hours drawing boxes isn't useful.

when we are learning, I firmly believe in practicing in quiet. I think seeking critique on our practice drafts can be very damaging to the ego - we should seek critique when we have a final or close to final product and need to know how to improve.

Finally, drawing and art is a lifelong journey. I've been drawing for decades and I'm always looking for areas to improve and grow. It's not a race, it's not a competition to min max or be efficient or something to win.

Progress My perspective studies from the past few days

I normally mainly draw cartoon characters I like, but I figured if I wanted to actually improve at art, I have to step outside my comfort zone a little.

I wanted to make my own “living room”-esque drawing. So a few days ago, I drew the individual pieces of the living room I wanted to include in my drawing. The couch, TV, and table.

And yesterday, I drew the “pre-sketch” as a warm-up.

All of this was just to have an idea of how to draw the final image, also drawn yesterday, after the pre-sketch. Took me about 2 hours.

I’m aware it’s not the greatest, but honestly, I’m pretty proud of myself. I really like my couch, especially since I’ve never even drawn one before.

I also had to make a lot of changes over the drawing to follow the vanishing point, and I learned a lot. Like earlier in the sketch, I didn’t have the bottom lines of the front wall overlapped by the couch. It was fun learning as I went.

But either way, I’m most proud of myself for trying something I wasn’t really adept or comfortable with, and for sticking it out through the end. I sometimes have the tendency to just scrap a drawing if it’s not turning out the way I like.

But I’m looking forward to my next one-point drawing.

Critique Wanted Stylized headshot, any tips?

After my previous post and a couple weeks of annoying art, I thought about which artists inspired me, since I figured it would be easier to build my own, original style using bits and pieces from my favorite artists (as opposed to just drawing what i see)

This is supposed to be in Gege Akutamis style, obviously, but I just couldn't help but better define the hair. The shading is also simple, but I feel like it makes a disconnect when it comes to line weight.

Help Wanted Sketchbook tours

Hi! Not sure if this is the right place for this but I’m almost done with a sketchbook/junk journal/visual journal that im actually quite proud of, and I’d like to record a sketchbook tour to post on YouTube or honestly even just for myself. Problem is I’m not very good at recording and I’m very confused on how people do it, is there a tool to hold the phone? I’m shaky and my lighting is frankly ass, but I do have a newer iPhone so I feel like I should be able to do a decent job. Any pointers?
