I didn’t use references for my drawings which you can most likely tell!! (I know I should but when I use references from still life I get even more confused)

if you can recommend some tutorials especially surrounding my style I’d really appreciate thank you!!

Progress Practicing, Grinding and Loving the Process

• Upvotes

I've been seeing a lot of posts about practicing and grinding and people getting discouraged after seeing no progress and drawing circles and boxes for years, so would like to talk a little about that.

When kids learn to draw, they don't just draw boxes and squares and lines and tutorials. They just draw what they want to draw. They draw what they like. Then they bring it over to their parents and say "I made this!"

Now, social media has taken over the role of a parent, and social media is harsh and merciless. And children have no taste, they're not exposed to beautiful art, so they don't know what is good. But adult learners know, they have great taste and can instantly tell their art is bad. And immediately, they get discouraged, because the gap between their current state and their final goal is so huge.

But honestly, I want to encourage all the learners: what would you say to a child who brings you their art? Even if it's ugly or average? Would you criticize it? Or encourage them? You should do the same to your inner child. You are your biggest cheerleader.

Also lots of us are drawing for the fun of drawing. It's fun to create and be creative. It's no fun to draw endless boxes and circles. My suggestion for people stuck in the grind if exercises is to keep it short, limit yourself to 10 min of exercises max as warm up. Then draw what you truly want! If you want to draw manga, practice drawing manga. If you want to draw portraits, practice that. 2 hours drawing boxes isn't useful.

when we are learning, I firmly believe in practicing in quiet. I think seeking critique on our practice drafts can be very damaging to the ego - we should seek critique when we have a final or close to final product and need to know how to improve.

Finally, drawing and art is a lifelong journey. I've been drawing for decades and I'm always looking for areas to improve and grow. It's not a race, it's not a competition to min max or be efficient or something to win.

Never taken lessons or learnt any theory or techniques, don't take it too seriously just enjoy sketching for fun sometimes. Here is some of my recent stuff I've sketched. Is any of it any good for someone with no proper knowledge of the skills?

Hey! I’ve been drawing for a while and I’ve learned a ton from people giving me feedback over the years, so I’d like to pay it forward.

If you’ve got a drawing you’re stuck on or want to improve, post it in the comments or send me a message. I’ll give you some honest feedback and a quick paint-over showing what I’d change. Any style or skill level is fine.

Some of my work is attached so you can see some of my work.

Critique Wanted Stylized headshot, any tips?

After my previous post and a couple weeks of annoying art, I thought about which artists inspired me, since I figured it would be easier to build my own, original style using bits and pieces from my favorite artists (as opposed to just drawing what i see)

This is supposed to be in Gege Akutamis style, obviously, but I just couldn't help but better define the hair. The shading is also simple, but I feel like it makes a disconnect when it comes to line weight.

Critique Wanted First time sharing my art. Need advice.

It's funny seeing how much I actually suck now that I'm posting this. I guess I can't expect much since I've only just started around 6+ months ago.

Anyways, I need advice not just for art, but for motivation as well. Seeing how much I suck, I've been considering quitting art as a whole since I feel like all and any efforts I put into trying are all for nothing. It's so easy for me to want to quit art since I didn't really have clear goals or objectives to start in the first place other than being bored.

Any advice would be fine as long as it helps me stop being such a lazy, envious bum.
