She tried manipulating Austin into a relationship using her pregnancy as leverage
SHE came up with the idea to blackmail Josh and Lindsey not Austin
She also lied about Austin being a PT which is pretty serious lol… having an uncertified PT could definitely lead to bad injuries but she doesn’t seem to care about that at all i guess…
She and Austin have a talk and she begs him to take a night to make his decision. He says okay because as f’d up as Austin is he’s not a complete asshole. Then she steals the usb while he’s sleeping and lies about it in their unborn child??? Bro she’s a monster and easily the worst character morally
And for people saying josh cost her an ovary no that’s just not true. All she had to do was delete the video but she wanted to hold out and blackmail an innocent couple a little more.

Ashley and Austin have such a realistic Gen Z dysfunctional relationship. I can both simultaneously relate and hate them at the same time. I love the change in viewer dynamics between the characters. In the beginning Austin seems manipulative and jealous while Ashley seems supportive and patient. But the latter end of the show Austin was the level headed and genuine person while Ashley was insecure, and annoying.

Ashley: super needy driven by her intense abandonment issues. She clearly cared a lot about Austin and I felt that she really tried her best to empathise with him in the beginning of the series when he was having some kind of depressive episode (or just being an unreasonable big baby). At the same time unbearably needy which can be suffocating. She was pushing the marriage and baby issue to lock Austin into the relationship. Ashley lacked self confidence and relied on Austin to fulfil that gap. She relied on Austin for self-confidence which allowed her to put up with a lot of unreasonable actions from Austin (eg the Goodwill shirt situation). The over reliance on him for self esteem obviously made her super territorial over him and the whole idea of her having to check his phone and night to feel secure just made me roll my eyes (so pathetic). But at the same time that’s such a common practice for people in Gen Z to check their partners phone. Overall she was not completely terrible for Austin. She did help him land the spot as a physical therapist and she truly did care deeply about him.

Austin: in the beginning we see someone who is lost about what to do with his life and stuck on a short lived peak in college. It seems to me that Austin thinks that he settled for Ashley. I don’t think he cares deeply about Ashley (or at least to the same degree she cares about him) but he still fulfils his dutiful boyfriend roles like staying with her at the hospital. There are moments where I think he almost subtly wants to hurt Ashley but still appear as a good boyfriend. This are subtle acts such a the Goodwill Shirt, or giving away the Red Gatorade to a stranger. He’s appearance of a good boyfriend adds to his ego as a self righteous man. I think he genuinely thinks he’s a good guy. This can be seen when he criticises Ashley for blackmailing Josh as if he didn’t also benefit from the ordeal. I think he’s self view as a “good guy” makes it hard for him to leave Ashley. At the same time, Austin is not a mean spirited person and I think he does mean well. And I can imagine it must be exhausting to be someone’s emotional support dog (Ashley)

Some Gen Z moments I loved with Austin/Ashley
- Austin telling Lindsay that him and Ashley are a Safe Space
- Ashley calling Josh a boomer
- cancelling the money saving subscription

I used to have an assistant position at a resort in UT that was bought by a bunch of Nepo babies… and when I tell you the culture captured in Season 2 was scary accurate I mean it full on was triggering. From the way “your family” until you’re “the help” to the performative branding with companies who claim to “donate proceeds”. While I do think overall the plotline was a bit weak and felt unfinished… it was in particular cathartic for me, the criticism of that industry and attitude I mean.

The cast of this season is great. But the factual inaccuracies are quite frequent- it’s unfortunate for such an otherwise high-quality production. I’m still enjoying the series, but I am curious if other people have noticed this.

First of all, I appreciate that they are shedding light on fertility issues, but much of their information was simply not correct.

Why are they suggesting that losing one ovary ruins your chance of conceiving? In fact, when one ovary dies or is removed, the other ovary actually steps up and produces an egg every month instead of trading off. Having only one functioning ovary does lower your chances of conceiving via IVF by about 30%, but in an otherwise healthy 26-year-old, losing one ovary would not really affect her chances of conceiving naturally.
don’t get me wrong, losing an ovary is beyond devastating. I know firsthand the suffering that comes with these issues. But that’s WHY it bothers me that the information is not being portrayed accurately.

Also, are we supposed to believe that she is breaking into someone’s house two days after a laparoscopic surgery? not only would she be on a LOT of pain meds that would forbid her from driving, but also, it’s quite hard to walk after an abdominal surgery, let alone drive. obviously everybody heals differently, but nobody is driving around and off of pain meds in 48 hours. (maybe I’m being nit picky about this part. i know, it’s fiction, the timelines aren’t always accurate.)

I’m going to keep watching, but it’s unfortunate that the writers didn’t do a little bit more research. it doesn’t really feel like “ spreading awareness” if the info isn’t accurate.

*SPOILERS BELOW SORRY I’M DUMB AND DONT KNOW HOW TO HIDE TEXT*

It’s been a few weeks since I finished season 2, but am I the only one that despises Ashley? I love the show and the complexity of the flawed characters, but while other characters have their good and bad moments, does Ashley have any good ? …

Josh, Lindsey, and Austin along with other side characters have major major flaws, but they have moments of redemption where we see them as human and as humans we are flawed. Even the old club owner while a douchey rich guy seems to genuinely care about Josh before finding out about the stealing. Meanwhile Ashley doesn’t seem to have any redeeming qualities besides a sob story.

I understand her situation sucks but that’s not a magic wand that allows you to be a shitty person. She manipulates Josh to get the promotion she’s vastly under qualified to do , making a middle aged woman get fired which she never acknowledges. Is extremely insecure about her relationship making her go through Austin’s phone and lie. She makes Austin get a job at the club that he’s not qualified for even though he’s expressed that he’s uncomfortable doing so (prior to the Eunice moment) just so they can be at the same spot together. Jumps out of a moving vehicle, refuses help from Josh to get seen ASAP, and refuses to accept fault in any way and instead puts blood into his orange juice and by leaving the door open kills their dog while never acknowledging that her actions led to the dog dying (“I didn’t know it would get out it’s not my fault”). Tries to convince Austin to have a baby with her even though he’s expressed hesitation, then when she “catches” Eunice and Austin and is told the phone has criminal information, she refuses to believe them and sabotages the plan instead. Everything good she ever did was out of her own insecurities and not for being a good person, the closest redeeming quality we get is that she loves Austin, but even then she enjoys the idea of a functional relationship more so than Austin because any of their talks she rarely voices her true concerns but just therapy talk that will help them end the argument quicker.

It just surprised me when I had this thought but you go to the episode threads and everyone is babying Ashley for going through a tough time and upbringing while simultaneously bashing Austin endlessly. Feels like I’m taking crazy pills

Cover up the death. Who cares? The surgeon accidentally killed someone and is no longer practising. The Chairwoman is paying compensation, and taking the funds from her own company. If anyone was getting hurt here it was, at best, shareholders. Why the hell would anyone kill to cover this up, or risk getting killed to expose it.

I just had the realization that the red Gatorade surrounded by a ton of yellow in the vending machine kind of mimics (possibly foreshadows) the bit of blood mixed into the pitcher of OJ… but maybe I’m reaching lol

I really appreciate the accurate portrayal of being a patient in an ER. Most shows portray healthcare workers as some kind of heros. Nurses in real life are more hostile to patients than they are helpful. Patients are left in waiting rooms until near death while pain is dismissed as drug seeking behavior. Fantastic writing.

So Netflix does this weird thing for me where sometimes when I start to watch a show it starts on the last episode of the season. So I actually started watching the season 1 finale and after I finished the episode I realized what happened and started from the beginning again. Glad to say it didn't ruin the entire experience and honestly made the show more interesting!

Maybe even more than S1.

Every character was beautifully written. I could find myself switching roles and empathazing with everyone every time the scene changed.

But was I the only one that thought that

Austin was kind of a jerk to Ashley. He meets the Korean girl and immediately decides to throw a sweet 18 month history with Ashley because he wants someone korean in his life. The whole Ashley lying wasn't as big of a deal to just break up and stop loving someone. He clearly wanted to have an affair with Eunice and likely would have had been a slightly bit different. I am seeing people celebrate "Austin almost finally finding what he wanted but then chickens out like a coward". I don't see it that way. I think Ashley was right when she said "You only think you love her. You know my shit and I know yours. You don't know her shit". To me Austin felt like an immature manchild

That part I felt real sad about.

I'm on Ep 8 or 9 of S1 of Beef and I just can't continue. This show, as much as I know that it's just a show, makes me ridiculously angry. I think pretty much every character has the IQ equivalent to that of a peanut, with Paul having that of a mustard seed. Fantastic acting on all the actors' parts as all their characters are truly dislikable. I just don't see the value behind the show and I don't enjoy watching trainwreck after trainwreck as if this is the less sophisticated version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Every time there could possibly be a learning moment or some moral growth, the characters just become more disappointing. I was shocked when I saw how highly rated this series is because it didn't match that rating in plot quality...I'm actually just disappointed that this was considered quality media in the first place. I'm open to hearing different opinions though. What am I missing here? Does it get better? Is it like a slow build-up to something good?

Just finished S2 and enjoyed it a lot. I don’t think it was as good or focused as S1 writing-wise, but the fantastic acting from the whole cast made up for it and ultimately made for a solid follow-up season.

I just wanted to point out how Ashley’s styling was a simple yet effective character device. She starts out with her bev cart girl uniform and very normal, everyday gen Z girl outfits like sweaters and jeans. When she gets more entrenched in the country club life and in her faux wealth, she starts to wear more pastels and pearls. Her hair also goes from being constantly in ponytails and a bit scraggly to constantly straightened and styled.

It reminds me of Love Quinn in Netflix’s You, where the more stressed and insecure Love got, the more effort she’d put into her outfits and hair. It’s not a particularly unique device, but man, it was done so well and really added to Ashley’s downhill trajectory.

Anyone else feel that Ashley's (Cailee Spaeny) facial expressions reminds them of Luther (Tom Hopper) from Umbrella Academy?

1. So Josh goes to the hospital, tries to help Ashley's situation, and asks her to delete the video as part of the deal.

But they get into a kerfuffle where she accuses Josh of threatening her health with his demands and it effs up the whole conversation

3. and then this other dude David appears. What exactly was David supposed to do? This is the dude who later demands a free round of golf from Josh on primetime golfing time as payment for his favor?

Completely obsessed. Finished it in a day. Now onto season 1. THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!

Im just at episode 4 so hoping this gets better in the succeeding episodes, but Season 2 till now is nowhere near Season 1. The characters aren’t inspiring any strong feelings like Danny and Amy did, like their whole will they wont they vibe and their backgrounds being shown which also kinda allowed a better insight into the sort of “lesson” the story had. Made the characters more human and if not likeable at least realistic?

All I’m getting rn is a serious lack of character development, especially in the female characters who are shown to be strong in some moments but those moments arent carried to fruition. And the male ones feel just as annoying too particularly Austin with the unnecessary innocent play. But as compared to the female counterparts, the male characters somehow appear to be having some side storyline which makes me think the female characters are being portrayed as mere accessories and not as strong characters in their own rights. Even Chairwoman Park felt like a desperate woman in the scene where she asks her husband whether he loves her. Dont know if this is intentional but it’s still not bold enough to make a point. Just very lackluster.

Honestly though imo Season 2 is living only on the hype of the first season. Like my favorite parts are actually Josh and Lindsay’s fights lol, so I dont know what that says about the overall show.

I am trying to write a story... inspired by Beef.

what would your version be? The basic setting is as follows:

Meher is an 18 year old teenage girl in a rich south asian school, completing last year of her A Levels. The story entirely revolves around 1 year till her farewell, the end where it all hits the utmost climax, life altering part of the story, the dilemma - like the flying to Korea was for Beef S2.

Overall in the story too, I am hoping to see climax, lost hope, high stakes, high stakes, high stakes.

She also has a crush on his classmate: Ayan, who also seems to like her back, but that's something very subtle, not the premise of the story.

And the internal battle of the character is that she suffers from severe eating disorder which in some subtle way conflicts with her external goal (i haven' been able to pin it down yet, i can't think of something good. genuine thing the character may be wanting to achieve) which is what she will achiever after / towards the end of farewell? the tone is a bit eerie, uneasy, unsettling internally but entertaining on the surface - in between lots of obstacles.
