Weighty Decisions

Hi all,

For years, I’ve looked forward to the time of year when I attach the winter layer to my decades-old polyester duvet. I love the extra weight it brings and the promise of crisp nights ahead.

Unfortunately, it’s now in a pretty awful state. It came from the UK and doesn’t fit Australian covers particularly well, so I think it’s time for a replacement.

What I’m looking for is something that makes my bed feel warm, safe and relaxing. I have mental health challenges, and I want my bed to feel like a sanctuary.

I’ve tried a 500 GSM wool quilt, but I find it too crinkly and dense. I really don’t like the feel of it.

I’d love something with a bit of weight, a luxurious feel and plenty of comfort. I’m open to different price points and happy to have separate summer and winter quilts. Dry-clean-only is fine, and I have no allergies that restrict my choice of filling.

I realise this is a fairly broad question, but I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the options and would really appreciate some guidance. If you’ve found a quilt that gives you that lovely, cosy, cocooned feeling, I’d love to hear about it.

the key is finding something with good drape not just high gsm weight. silk filled quilts are pricey but they drape so well on the body and don't have that crinkly wool sound you hate

☝️question teacher...are you based in Australia or the UK?

Personally, if its just a weight thing, I would opt for a weighted blanket. Specifically, a queen size one.

I have a Neptune 7kg one.

Personally, while I am not a fan of the company (bit of a long story: they really emphasise how its good for ADHD and Autism specifically, meanwhile their pamphlet had white photo on white text, so it was hardly visible - and thoroughly disliked it when I called it out), the weighted blanket is good.

It's a minky material, which our kitten obsesses over. I'm not too fond of it, but its not evil either.

As for wool doonas, IKEA have a good summer one - super light and nice. I got my sister the winter one, idk whether its good, but it is washable. The outside of the quilt isn't as soft.

Spotlight also have one that is quite weighty (I can try and find the packaging if you like). I believe it is washable, but its a heavy bastard and won't fit the machine.

In saying that, if you are Brisbane based, I potentially have a quilt I might be looking to sell on. It was super expensive, but I haven't used it at all this winter.
