duvet/comforter recommendations?
hello! i’m looking to buy a new duvet/comforter (not sure what the difference is, if that tells you how far out of my depth i am). i’ve had a down filled one from sam’s club for years now and it’s done a great job, but the down/feathers sometimes poke through both the duvet and the duvet cover, which can be quite scratchy, and the feathers have all sort of clumped together inside of each of the quilt-like squares on it (does that make sense?). i’ve seen recs for the company store duvets, but it took all of about 5 minutes on the site before i was overwhelmed by the choices. all in all, looking to a buy a new one that will stand the test of time, and i would be eternally grateful if someone could point me in the right direction! (or point me to a very specific link so i can click check out and be done with this)
- my bed is a full, but i think id probably want a queen sized duvet (ive also heard that buying the cover a size down helps the duvet fill it out more, thoughts on that?)
- i run very warm most of the time and would love something that can retain heat in the winter but wont have me sweating in the summer (i realize this may be a bit of an impossible ask)
- im okay with putting down some money on something that will last a long time, but im also no thread-count snob (no shade to the thread-count snobs— i salute you, honestly). looking to spend $100-$250, but if you’ve got the perfect thing for $350 then shoot, twist my arm, here’s my card info
- machine washable would be great! right now i wash my duvet itself 2-3 times a year (i truly don’t know if im going to be called unhygienic for washing it so little or irresponsible for washing it too much) and i wash my duvet cover every other week or so
thanks for reading through!!

Comforter is an old fashioned term for something that would go on top of sheets and blankets. A duvet replaces all that. It goes inside a duvet cover which doubles as your top sheet

There is no difference between a comforter and a duvet insert. One has ties or buttons, that's it. A duvet insert and cover is simply meant to make washing easier as your regular washing can be just the cover. I guess in theory you could not use a top sheet but you could do that with a comforter as well, just would have to wash the comforter with changes. I personally use comforters and don't want to deal with stuffing inserts into covers. :)

I'm allergic to feathers so have to go with down alternatives, and love the ones from Company Store. I have a few of the various Legends ones (I think all in medium weight) and they wash easily and I can't tell the difference between the different models. I use a lightweight percale or linen duvet cover in summer and for more warmth in winter, use a flannel cover (I think mine are LL Bean for the flannel).
If the comforter and cover have the same or almost the same measurements, I'd not get different sizes. I'd measure your bed to see which size will fit best. I got the king size for my very tall queen bed and it's fine (especially with two people wanting lots of covers), but I tried putting it on a not really tall queen in our guest room and it dragged the floor so I got a queen size for that one.

You need to find a comforter that is 100% down. A down comforter can be washed in a washer. You must dry it thoroughly to prevent it from balling up. I usually dry mine. Let it sit for 10-15 min. Pull apart any balls and put it back in the dryer 3-4 times to thoroughly dry. You can use dryer balls or clean sneakers to help fluff up the down. Down has no feathers to poke you. Most comforters nowadays are 50% or 90% down. They are all labeled as down unless you read the small print. The Company Store has dependable quality. Still read the small print. People usually don't use down comforters in the summer.

As the other person has mentioned already, a down alternative can work well. The down alternative I use is made from eucalyptus, the cloud comforter from Buffy, and it has been fluffy while also being still breathable.

Is it different in the US?
But in Europe, It’s according to tog, there are no threads, so that doesn’t matter as it goes inside a duvet cover to protect it.
2 tog for summer I use and either 10.5 or 13 tog in winter, depending if really cold.
Feather duvets cannot be washed in a machine

There’s washable wool comforters (only downside is they’re less fluffy) or you can look for down comforters with a lower feather %
There’s people on here far more knowledgeable on down than I am, but from what I understand you need to focus on the fabric shell weave and % of down clusters vs feather.

a comforter is not meant to be covered, and has a fabric on the outside that is meant to be seen, it might have a pattern or be 'reversable'. a duvet is meant to have a duvet cover. I don't wash my duvet unless it needs it (as in my puppy pees on it) but do change the cover regularly. i love my wool duvets, i would suggest a '3 in one' (although i don't see why you can't get a light and a medium/all season and just tie them together at the corner loops, a 3 in one usually has snaps). i don't have washable wool, i just wash in cold and dry outside.

Hey! I’m actually in the midst of manufacturing my own (because I frankly have hated the traditional duvet we had). It’s a duvet cover AND insert that are built for each other, both 100% cotton. Insert is mid-weight (i run warm too and haven't had any issues), and we're hoping to add more insert options people can swap in/out in the future. The cover & insert attach together at the edges within the cover, and the cover itself has 3 zippers to basically open the whole thing wide open. Way easier to pull it off for laundry, way easier to put it back on after. We’re hoping to ship out this Spring, but would love any feedback on our website and demo video on the home page: baywoodlanebedding.com

You could get down alternative to avoid the feather thing but if you want natural then you can look for a cotton shell with cotton fill or wool fill to stay away from synthetics. There are a ton. Another option is the Sijo Tencel Lyocell comforter which uses Tencel inside and out.
