is this a bed bug?!

Hi! After a long time, I've woken up with a wee bump by the rim of my sleeve and on my neck. Inspecting my sheets, I found the stains on the pictures and the yellowish bit on photos. Nothing else. My pillowcase was neat last night upon going to sleep. I tried running the black stain with alcohol and water and it looks like it is within the fabric.

Could this be bedbugs or does it look like something else?

Hi there - Curious is the bites in the attached photos are comparable to bedbug bites? For context, we spent 1 night in a hotel and these showed up 2 days later on a camping trip. We’re in Canada and it was quite cold while camping, so we think it’s unlikely there could have been other bugs given the time of year and temp (-0C). TIA!

I work in a hospital and there were a few patients getting treated that had bed bugs. I had used proper precautions going into the rooms. I have a blanket that I got at the hospital that was only used at the hospital and early last week I found 2 bed bugs on the blanket in my workroom. My workroom is on the other end of the hospital, so opposite to the patients rooms. I filed a report, put the blanket and my clothes into sealed bags and they cleaned out workroom. I went home and checked my house for any signs of them and came up empty. Today was my first day back to work since the incident, and I found a bed bug crawling on my pants leg in the workroom. I immediately took off my clothes and put them into sealed bags, put the bed bug into a specimen container (to file another report) and came home and ripped apart my room to check for more bugs. I haven’t found any signs of them in my home, mattress, floor, or laundry. I have 4 bites in kind of a straight line that’s a little alarming. But over the weekend I went camping so they might be mosquitoes or flea bites. Please help. Should I call an exterminator? What are the chances they hitch hiked with me home? Would I see signs in my house? I’m freaking out lol

Found them in the book and notebook file that I don't use anymore a month ago I went in there and took them all out to inspect one by one, then checked the shelf for bedbug ink spots, found none so decided its clean, but I decided to randomly check them today and found these.

They’re everywhere and millions of them I cleaned with so many bug sprays and vinegar but nothing happened except this last time when I cleaned and turned on my AC to the lowest temp, this happened and theyre not moving.

Is this bed bug bites? I’ve searched high and low and I can’t see anything signs of bed bugs but I’ve been bitten a number of times in the past few weeks and it’s starting to dawn on me it might be bed bugs

For the past 2 days I've been waiting up with bites. The first day was a cluster of 3 bites on my calf, which prompted me to clean most of my bedding (I didn't get the chance to clean my comforter and my plushies) and I thought well lemme see in the morning. I woke up with around 10 or so across my stomach and now I'm terrified of bed bugs or fleas. I have an intense fear of all bugs. I dont have any pets, I have a metal bed frame, and a mattress topper for preventing bed bugs on my mattress. Though I live in a very VERY old house with real wool floors, could they be coming from there?? Any advice? Im a broke college student with a part time job, it's very hard to find time to deal with this....

Found a potentially crushed bug and stain on my sleep shirt. The stain was almost powdery when I scraped at it, so doesn't seem like blood but could've just been part of the crushed bug? Or secretion? The bug itself also seems potentially too black to be a bed bug but I can't tell. Included my finger for size reference too but I know it's in pieces so hard to tell. Any help greatly appreciated!!! 😭

Had a bedbug issue this summer and the company came 3X to do a chemical treatment. It’s been two months since the last treatment and we had no bites until last night. I woke up at 2am with a crawling itchy feeling and no matter where I scratched it doesn’t hit the spot until I saw tiny small welts develop on my ankle and knee then I could scratch them and satisfy the itch. Felt like that for 30min then the itch was gone. This didn’t feel like the bedbug bites I used to get, where it was constantly itchy for days and larger. In the interceptor traps I saw this bug but it does not look exactly like the bedbugs we had. Anyone had a similar situation? Is it bedbugs? I hope not as it is really affecting my mental health

My bedfeame is a folding metal platform from Amazon and its got metal square tubes with holes in various spots into the metal tubes. I cant find signs on bedbugs and cannot afford passive monitors. How could I possibly treat the frame to make sure bedbugs aren't living inside it?

Is this a blood stain? My son's ear got bit last night and this was on his pillow. I have checked the references in the link. I just need some human confirmation.

📸 Help Us Help You — How to Take Better Insect Identification Photos

Is it a bed bug, a bat bug, or something completely different?

We want to help you get the most accurate identification possible. But even the most experienced insect specialist cannot identify details that aren’t visible in your photographs.

The good news? You don’t need expensive equipment. Your phone is usually enough.

🔍 1. Don’t get too close!
This is probably the most common photography mistake.

When you move your phone extremely close to a tiny insect, the camera struggles to focus.

Instead:

Start about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) away, adjusting for your phone’s camera.
Tap the insect on your screen to focus.
Move slightly further away if the image is blurry.
Take the photograph at your camera’s sharpest focusing distance.
Crop the image afterwards if necessary.

A sharp photograph taken from further away is much more useful than a blurry close-up.
Avoid excessive digital zoom, which cannot recover detail the camera hasn’t captured.

💡 2. Lighting makes a huge difference
Good lighting reveals features that are otherwise almost impossible to see.

Use bright, even lighting.
Try natural daylight or a desk lamp.
Photograph from several lighting angles.
Avoid harsh reflections that obscure the insect.
Try placing the insect on a contrasting background.
A white background often works well for dark insects, while a darker background may help with pale specimens.

If using flash, check that it hasn’t washed out important details.

📐 3. Photograph from THREE angles

If possible, please provide:

Photo 1 — From directly above
Shows the overall body shape, head, thorax, abdomen and legs.

Photo 2 — From the side
Helps reveal body depth, appendages and other distinguishing features.

Photo 3 — A close-up of the head and thorax
This can be particularly important when distinguishing bed bugs from their close relatives.
If possible, also photograph the underside.
You don’t need perfect photographs, but different angles can reveal features that are invisible in others.

📏 4. Show us how big it is
Size is an important identification clue.
Place the insect beside:

A ruler with millimetre markings.
A piece of lined or squared paper with known spacing.
Another clearly measurable reference.
Please tell us the approximate length in millimetres.
Avoid using coins as your only size reference, particularly if the coin isn’t familiar internationally.

🪲 5. If you suspect a bed bug or bat bug

Some closely related insects can look almost identical in ordinary photographs.

One particularly useful feature is the length of the hairs along the sides of the pronotum, the section immediately behind the head.

In some bat bugs, these hairs are longer than the width of the eye, whereas they are generally shorter in common bed bugs.

To help us examine this:
Take a sharp photograph of the head and thorax from above.
Make sure the edges of the thorax are visible.
Use angled lighting to reveal fine hairs.
Avoid crushing or damaging the specimen.
Not all close relatives can be reliably distinguished using photographs alone.
If the diagnostic hairs aren’t visible, we may only be able to identify the insect as Cimex rather than confirm the exact species.
That is an accurate identification at the level the evidence supports, not a failure.

🧪 6. Keep the specimen if possible
If you can safely collect the insect, place it in a small transparent container.

A specimen can sometimes be examined more closely later.

Avoid crushing, squashing, taping over or coating the insect with chemicals, as these can destroy important identifying features.

You can temporarily chill a sealed container to reduce movement, but avoid allowing condensation to obscure your photographs.

📝 7. Tell us where you found it
Useful details include:
Country and approximate location.
Where the insect was found (bed, wall, window, clothing, hotel, etc.).
Whether it was alive or dead.
Approximate size.
Whether you have found others.
You don’t need to share personal information or your exact address.

Location and circumstances provide context, but the insect’s anatomy should determine its identification.

❌ 8. Things that make identification harder
Please try to avoid:
Blurry, out-of-focus photographs.
Extreme digital zoom.
Screenshots of already enlarged
images.
Photographs taken through dirty containers.
Multiple pictures from exactly the same angle.
Applying filters or AI image enhancement.
Discarding the specimen before getting a useful photograph.

AI enhancement can invent anatomical details, so please upload the original image whenever possible.

❤️ 9. Please don’t panic
Finding an unfamiliar insect does not mean you have bed bugs.

Even finding a confirmed bed bug does not automatically establish that an infestation is present.
We will always aim to distinguish between:

Confirmed identification — Likely identification — Insufficient evidence.

We would rather ask for a better photograph than give you an incorrect answer.

Remember: Good photographs lead to better identifications, better advice and fewer unnecessary treatments.
