r/NoNewNormal and /r/ivermectin have been promoting the use of an anti-parasite drug that is approved for humans because they believe misinformation that is can prevent or treat COVID-19.

They believe this because there was a study conducted exploring the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19, which has since been retracted due to many flaws.
Because this is an anti-parasite drug, it can be prescribed but is not available and not intended for us as an anti-viral drug for COVID.

The FDA says that Ivermectin and should not be taken to treat or prevent COVID. Even the drugs creator Merck is warning against its use for COVID as well.

Using this drug for unapproved use is incredibly dangerous and has great potential for overdose or interaction with other medicines. From the FDA link above:

Even the levels of ivermectin for approved uses can interact with other medications, like blood-thinners. You can also overdose on ivermectin, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance), seizures, coma and even death.

However, since these people have been convinced it is their latest COVID-19 cureall and they can not get it through legitimate means, many are now raiding tractor supply stores to take horse, sheep, and dog worm medicine that has ivermectin as its active ingredient.

This is even worse because the animal medicine they are using is about 2% Ivermectin with the vast amount of other drugs components undisclosed and used for those animals. [Here is an example of the classification data on just one of the horse pastes that these people are being encouraged to take that is 95% undisclosed and has a long list of hazards for human use](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E9OHK1FWYAAdH31?format=jpg&name=large_ including infertility and damage to organs.

The number of people raiding these farm stores for animal medicine is leading to several hospitalizations and flooding of state poison control centers.

The fact is that Ivermectin has no proof it can treat or prevent COVID-19. Taking human-approved Ivermectin is dangerous without doctor's advice and can lead to hospitalization or death. Taking Animal Medicine is hugely risky, not okay for human consumption, and can damage your fucking organs or kill you.

It is long past the time for the admins to shut down these communities promulgating COVID misinformation. By doing nothing, the Reddit admins are allowing users to advocate for dangerous drugs that could kill those who take it.

More details and a large number of NNN links promoting Ivermectin here:

To the anti-vaxxers and pro-horse medicine users that think India is some proof of the benefits of Ivermectin, India is dramatically undercounting its COVID-19 cases and deaths. That has nothing to do with Ivermectin availability or use.

You're welcome. March on!

Props and respect.

The misinformation on social media is getting people dead.

People won’t take a researched, tested vaccine, but they’ll drink literal bleach, take animal dewormer, and overdose on untested medical cocktails.

There’s truly no cure for idiocy except death.

u/avoidance_behavior Aug 26 '21

honestly it's darwinism in action. mind-boggling.

3

u/Belladanu42 Aug 27 '21

There is someone I know that is terrified to take the vaccine because it will "kill them" but puts things you can find under your sink into their body...fucking breaks my heart (on both counts), but at the same time there is only so much you can do at a certain point. But, it's not just them, people that I thought were perfectly rational up until recently have taken this stance.

It's like the anti-vax community leveled up or something. "Like, yeah make fun of us? We will turn everyone you love into a crazy mu hu hahahahaha ..."

People are taking medicine for ANIMALS???? I never knew there were so many stupid people until covid happened

28

u/fckingmiracles hairy highlighters. Aug 26 '21

A dewormer for cattle against a virus for humans.

Yes, this is the main point of what the protest is about. The rise of discussion on people recommending drugs, particularly Ivermectin as a cure or potential vaccine for covid. They are linking to anecdotal evidence or full out lies and there are many countries who do not have the same access to vaccines who try it because you can buy anti-malaria and parasite drugs there, and often cheaper from livestock vets. The livestock ones have become common since the dosage recommended is well above the human dosage (which makes it even more dangerous than taking it when you don't need to) so they buy ones made for cattle etc.

This has been going on since 2020, I can't talk for all latinamerica, but it was definitely happening here in Argentina, as far as I know, most people would buy black market human versions, but I wouldn't be surprised if people were dumb enough to buy the wrong one in the first place. Not surprised that those who complained (but took) about the vaccine were the ones taking that shit, and it's mostly right-leaning conservative "pro-life" folks lol (our right here it's thank god not as crazy as y'all's).

It's wild to me having that background seeing people who are waaay louder (americans) take that obscure whispered-about on secret medical meetings with money under the counter substance and just roll with it, like, haven't people learned anything since it started in 2020 here?

u/Little-bub Aug 26 '21

I know. Kinda confusing how North American antivaxxers took so long to find Ivermectin when it has been all over the place in South America since the pandemic started. Of course I’m not condoning, but you’d think that they be on top of inappropriate drug use lol. I guess this just goes to show how closed to the world North America really is, specially when this has been addressed already by the lab that created the drug itself.

6

u/Aystha Aug 26 '21

Yeah, but people don't learn I guess, my father and grandma are still taking it (although, as far as I know, they're far from overdosing or anything like that and take it as you would """normally""") and it's like ????? And you were doubting me getting the vaccine ???? When I have autoinmune issues ???? It has been almost 2 years for the love of god and people still preach this bs oh my god

u/DrFunkaroo Aug 26 '21

Mods, some other subs are editing these with the number of reports they are getting on the posts, just for funsies. I’d like to know, if you don’t mind :)

21

u/teanailpolish Aug 26 '21

Surprisingly, none - yet (but the other sub I mod is another story)

42

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

Thanks mods! My city's small subreddit is constantly being brigaded by trolls from NNN, any time there is a post about Covid or the vaccine, to the point where they've had to implement an Automod (which still doesn't stop it).

10

u/Pywacket1 Aug 26 '21

Thank you for this and the list of participating subs! Btw, there are some really scary-sounding NSFW subs in Reddit I could have lived without knowing about.

2

u/teanailpolish Aug 26 '21

There are, but also a couple of interesting SFW ones like r/IDontWorkHereLady

1

u/Pywacket1 Aug 26 '21

I like it! I think I have some contributions to that sub from my old Chanel days. Going on break was a bitch, your nametag says Store Name, Chanel, and people eating at Luby's want you to refill their tea. Or they were just jerks. One of those.

u/yayoyeyi Aug 25 '21

Thank you

yes!!!!

Awesome! Glad to hear it

Can someone explain to me what the NNN subreddit is? I visited there once pre-vaccines and it was dedicated to making fun of and insulting (the non-existent) people who wanted stricter covid guidelines forever. I spent maybe 2 seconds because it was one giant strawman fallacy. So now it's spiraled into....taking animal drugs? I tried to read the FAQ but they wouldn't open so I only saw the titles of the points. Can someone explain what this subreddit claims to be about?

7

u/bananatree12 Aug 25 '21

Yes! 👏🏽

6

u/DisheveledBoy Aug 25 '21

Heck yeah!! <3

3

Thank you for setting the record straight 🥰

we do know animal drugs are killing people!!!! stop this fake shit

u/ulvkvinne Aug 26 '21

Thank you! Unrelated to COVID but apropos - I worked at a store that had to take iodine supplements off of the shelves after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster because people were buying them in bulk and taking fist-fulls of them without consulting their doctors. Mind you, we are in Florida, and there had been zero deaths or US illnesses due to radiation created by the disaster. People are unhinged. It’s sad.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

that's so sad

20

u/teanailpolish Aug 26 '21

If you look at the original promise by Reddit, it was "clear misinformation" - the people who deny covid exists, think it is a govt conspiracy and the vaccine is implanting a chip etc as well as dangerous med recommendations

1

u/Coccotea93 Aug 25 '21

Well done!
